Cendol Pulut Behrang @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

As we know it, Cendol is a South East Asian delicacy and is widely available throughout the country and the region with the famous ones in Malaysia being in Penang. There is this particular Malay Cendol stall in Behrang, Perak which is famous too and it is called Cendol Pulut Behrang. Besides the outlet in Behrang, they also have a branch outlet in Tanjung Malim, on the Ulu Bernam side of town, just along the main trunk road. Curious to try out their Cendol, I visited their place this afternoon.

This stall isn't that big but is good enough to accommodate the usual crowd. If one is coming from the Tanjung Malim side of town, keep going straight into Ulu Bernam until you see the Ulu Bernam Police Station on your right. Best to slow down here and shortly, you would be able to see the Mosque on the right side as well. In less than 20 meters, there would be a turning to the left. At this turning, the stall would be clearly visible. This stall is mostly packed during the afternoons. They operate from 11 am till 6 pm daily. There's a small open air seating area and another indoor seating area which is slightly larger. Parking can be a problem as there are no dedicated or proper parking bays. The best would be to park along the side of the roads.

Price List

Quite A Number Of Write Ups
When I was here, the place was still buzzing and this was around 4.30 pm. Orders are best placed at the preparation counter. A young guy typically runs the place and he is assisted by three of four ladies. Having done with my ordering, I found a table to park myself. Well, it was quite a long wait and the ladies incessantly screwed up the deliveries of orders. Many times, my order was sent to other people who came after me and even other peoples orders were sent to me. At this stall, they have a variety of Cendol and some other items like Laksa, Rojak Buah, Fried Rice etc. I kept getting items like Fried Rice, Laksa and other peoples drinks being served at my table which was ridiculous to observe. It was not once but every single time that a dish was ready, the delivery was often screwed up and delivered wrongly. Now, coming to their Cendol. The prices here are definitely on the high side. Dine In is cheaper and take away's are slightly more expensive. Also, here they have split the items used for a single bowl of Cendol into various dishes. For example, I ordered Cendol Pulut which only comes with shaved ice and Pulut. Cendol Kacang has only peanuts in it. Cendol Jagung has only sweet corn in it when in actual case, all these are critical ingredients that make an excellent Cendol and has to be served in a single bowl and not as separate items like this. They also have the plain Cendol which is nothing but plain shaved ice with the syrup and Gula Melaka.

After 22 minutes from the time of order, my Cendol was finally sent over to me. Well, the Cendol was pathetic. It was a very small portion, stingy amounts of jelly, Gula Melaka and a chunk of Pulut which did not taste sweet at all. The Gula Melaka was added for namesake as well and it was clearly insufficient. It was like drinking plain shaved ice with coconut milk. I wonder why this dish of Cendol is so famous. I kept wondering if these guys have ever tried the Indian Muslim Cendol. This dish is clearly an embarrassment to Cendol itself. Based on what I have tasted today, I would rate this at 5/10 . It was very average and nothing more than that. Just plain simple edible, that's very much what it was.

On the whole, I was personally disappointed to see the Cendol. It neither looked like a good bowl of Cendol nor did it taste anywhere close to it. I wonder why all the hype about this place. There are so many other good Cendol joints in town which is way better than this and I wonder why people still come here. One thing for sure, individual taste buds are definitely a very unique and interesting thing.
