Korean House Restaurant @ Bukit Baru, Melaka

I was down in Malacca today for business and while looking for a place to have lunch, I came across this restaurant called Korean House.

Korean House in Malacca
This is literally a house whereby the ground floor has been converted into a restaurant and the upper floor is utilised as the house space by this Korean family. It is located right next to the main road, close to an intersection near the Melaka City Council along Jalan Datuk Palembang. Being a banglo property, there was ample parking space here. Please do note that this house is perched on a slope and can be difficult to sight but the signs are quite clear.

It was a pretty huge space for a restaurant and having converted the ground floor of their home into a restaurant definitely eliminates the element of monthly rental. Though simple in design, the place was extremely clean and I just loved the old Italian floor tiles. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the owner Mr. Albert Lee Won Tae.

The Cutlery

Menu
The reception I must say was very warm from both Albert and his wife. We took our place at the far end table and shortly they brought us the menu. Drinking water is on the house but then other drinks are chargeable. They also seemed to have a great collection of Korean wines. From the menu, it seems that the price is on the upside, even compared to that of Kuala Lumpur. But I guess since there may not be that many Korean Restaurants in Malacca, that seemed justifiable. I then placed the orders and we waited for the meal to arrive. I could literally hear the noise of the wok and the grill coming from the kitchen. That is good as it clearly indicates that the meals are fresh. Most of the vegetables are home grown too. There were quite a number of customers here at this time of the day. Besides, from the design on the table, it is clear that they have a number of customers who come here for the Korean Steamboat.

Our Lunch
After about half an hour, all the dishes came simultaneously. Basically it was just three dishes that we ordered from the menu and they came with a number of side dishes.

Dwaeji Jummulleok @ RM 36.00

Twelve Side Dishes
The above Daweji Jummulleok comes with a set of twelve side dishes. Being priced at RM 36.00, I find that it does come with a lot of items. It is typically Grilled Pork with a variety of side dishes which are mostly vegetables and Korean Kimchi. The Grilled Pork, I must say, was excellent. The meat was extremely soft, tender, chewy and delicious. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 . The other side dishes too were pretty good but unlike in Kuala Lumpur where mostly they are refillable, here it was limited to one serving only. Nevertheless, I would still rate it based on the taste at 8.8/10 .

Kim Chi Soup @ RM 23.00
Sorry that I only remembered to take the photo after consuming half of it. This dish was good for four bowls. This soup was really nice. Filled with various vegetables and a little pork meat, it was nicely spiced with a touch of sourness. However, this was not the best Kim Chi Soup that I have tried but surely stands out. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Vegetables, Garlic & Chillies
This is a standard dish in any Korean Restaurant. Here , it was on the house.

Kim Chi Jeon @ RM 28.00
The Kin Chi Jeon here was much spicier than the ones available at most other places. I must say that the size was huge and would be good for four. They do not give the dip sauce until I asked for it. Perhaps their style is to have it just like that. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Overall, this is a great place to have a good Korean meal in Melaka. Our bill for the day came to RM 111.10 including 10% Service charges and drinks. The price is not high bearing in mind the dish sizes. Initially when I was ordering, I felt that it was expensive as I was not able to gauge the dish sizes but as the dishes arrived, I could see why it was priced as such. What we ordered could have been sufficient for four pax. This place is also very suitable for business meetings and discussions as the environment is quiet and comfortable. Good Wifi connectivity is also provided for those who wish to work from here. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
