Restoran Yik Mun: Tg. Malim Pau @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Today my brother and I decided to head to Restaurant Yik Mun for some tea time snacks. Yik Mun is one of the old restaurants established in Tanjung Malim and over the years their Pau's have become famous nationwide so much so there are other outlets available in some of the highway rest areas and in Kuala Lumpur. This restaurant belongs to my classmate which he inherited from his father and grandfather. I would not delve much into the past as I have done so in another blog on their outlet in Hartamas. If you would like to read that, please click on this link. http://venoth.blogspot.com/2013/02/kafe-yik-mun-famous-tg-malim-pau.html

Restoran Yik Mun, Tanjung Malim
It is quite easy to locate this restaurant. If you are using the North South Highway and exit at Tanjung Malim, once you pay the toll keep coming straight until you reach a traffic light. The sign may tell you to turn left before this to go to Tanjung Malim but please disregard that. At this traffic light, turn left and drive all the way straight. You would pass a traffic light. At this first traffic lights, continue straight until you reach the third traffic lights where you would see a Hindu Temple on your left. You cannot miss the Hindu Temple. At this point, if you look right, you would be able to see this restaurant. All that you would have to do is to turn right at this traffic lights, go straight until you are able to do a U turn and then come down the road again till you see the restaurant. You would hardly be able to miss it based on these directions. There are ample of parking spaces available by the side of the restaurant. If you are here during the weekends or public holidays, please do expect to wait a while to even get a table.

This restaurant is quite simple in design. Nowadays, it is very difficult to sight the owners as the restaurant is mostly run by some Indonesian workers and the chefs are mostly Malays. They have acquired the Halal status in the early 1990's and this has contributed to the huge number of Muslim patrons which is good as it boosts their business further.

The Menu

The Menu

The menu was something that was introduced in recent years. Those days, it was all about personalised service and you would see the owners serving the customers themselves. The coffee and tea was also made by the Chinese and everything was better then. Today, we are seeing the cost of progress and yet people from outside the town do come in huge groups as they like the food here. I doubt any local visits this place anymore as we know how the taste and quality has dwindled over the years. But again, we should not stick to the old taste as the yardstick as still comparatively  their Pau's are decently better than many out there.Coming from a local who have been eating these Pau's for the past 30+ years, I would say that surely the quality has dropped very much from then. Those days they were all hand made and today they are machine made and kept frozen. They are just heated up before being served. Even the chicken chop which is so famous is nothing much compared to another outlet in Tanjung Malim which serves better, cheaper and tastier Hainanese Chicken Chop which is just a few doors away.

Hainanese White Coffee @ RM 2.20

I ordered the above Hainanese White Coffee. It was not up to the mark. In fact, it tasted quite bad. The one that I tried in their Hartamas outlet was much better than this one. I would only rate this at 4/10.

Tea Without Milk @ RM 1.40

This tea was quite okay. Not the best that is available out there but quite decent. I would rate this at 7/10.

Our Mixture Of Pau's

Curry Chicken Pau @ RM 2.00

Curry Chicken Pau @ RM 2.00

I do not want to say much about the historical taste of this pau but as of today, it is still pretty decent. Compared to the other similar Curry Chicken Pau's in the market, this still scores pretty high and I would rate this at 9/10 .

Red Bean Pau @ RM 1.70
Once again, this was also quite decent but I would only rate this at 6.8/10 .

Overall, this is still a nice place especially if you need to get Halal food but I would disagree when many people speak greatly about their food. I honestly hope that the quality of the food does not drop further in the years to come as it has already seen a great slack. Today's bill came to RM 10.50 . Would I return again here, of course I would for many reasons. Firstly, it is the pride of my hometown. Secondly, the Pau's are still relatively good and thirdly, I would still come to support my classmate.
