Fook Kee @ Kepong Baru, Kuala Lumpur

Restaurant Fook Kee is a specialty restaurant that specialises in Roast Duck Rice and Roast Chicken Rice. It is located on the busy side of Kepong Baru, near the market and facing the main trunk road of Kepong Baru. Being located on the road fronting block, it is quite easy to sight this restaurant as you drive along the main road. The owners have been in this business for more than ten years now and I heard from some friends that their roasted duck and chicken is really good.

Restaurant Fook Kee in Kepong Baru

Interior of the Restaurant

The Owner Preparing the dishes and take away's
This is a no frills restaurant and has a very simple layout. They have a counter in front of the restaurant where the orders are placed and the roasted ducks and chicken are put to hang. Unlike other Chicken Rice restaurants, they do not offer steamed chicken. They usually start business around 10 am and by 12.30, most of their Roast Duck and Roast Chicken is sold out. I was here today at 12 noon and when I arrived, there was one last roast duck hanging and that too had been reserved for a customer who had prepaid. All that I got to order was their Roast Chicken and Roast Pork. Besides this, they also have a number of other Chinese dishes being displayed on another counter just like a Chinese Mixed Rice restaurant and that too was selling like hot cakes. Although it looked good to me, I wanted to try to stick to what was recommended as I know with that itself, I would be quite full. After placing my orders, I walked over to one of the tables and took my place. From my observation while waiting for my lunch to arrive, most of their customers were take away's. Some of them, came much earlier and ordered like twenty to thirty Chicken Rice packs and came back later just to collect them. As I am sitting here, by 12.45, all their Roasted Chicken was sold out and all that was left was just a few metal trays with bits of food from the mixed rice section.

White Rice with Chili Paste
Their rice was just the standard white rice although I was expecting the Yellow Rice which is usually made to boil with ginger, margarine and a number of other ingredients which goes very well with the Chicken. However, their Chili Paste was really superb and spicy. Being a Chili lover, I could have just eaten the white rice with their Chili Paste and would not even require any other dish.

Roast Chicken & Roast Pork @ RM 5.30
The set of the above Roast Chicken, Roast Pork and Rice cost me RM 5.30 . First I tried their Roast Pork. To me it was just very average. There was nothing great about it and I have tasted much better ones elsewhere. I would perhaps rate their Roast Pork at 5/10 . Now, time for me to try their Roast Chicken. I am not really a fan of Roast Chicken and if you do follow my blogs, you would have noticed that I always go for the Steamed Chicken. Here however due to the recommendations, I wanted to try their Roast Chicken. With the first bite, I realised why the recommendations were so strong and that also explained why they were sold out pretty fast. It was just fantastic and was like an explosion of heavenly juices in your mouth. The Chicken was so tender despite being roasted and the skin was crisp and delicious. Definitely the best Roast Chicken that I have ever tried. It is sad that I could not top up as they ran out of it and also it was a waste that I could not try their Roast Duck as that is another one of my favourites. I would rate their Roast Chicken at 10/10 . Definitely worth the long drive coming here today.

Pork & Peanuts Herbal Soup @ RM 5.00

Closer Look At The Meat
I stumbled upon this dish by chance as I saw a number of people ordering this. All the menu written on the walls were in Chinese and hence I could not read them. I asked the Indonesian workers and they told me that the soup available is the common soup that is given free and that is self collected at the counter in front. Not being convinced, I walked up to the owner and asked him what those people were having in the earthen jars and he told me that that's their specialty herbal soup. They have it in three varieties. Pork at RM 5.00 each, Vegetable at RM 5.00 each and finally Chicken at RM 6.50 each. I requested him to send over a Pork Herbal Soup. Now, the soup had a natural dark colour to it and that must be contributed by the herbs. There was an assortment of meat parts in the soup along with loads of peanuts. The aroma was truly great. The moment I tasted it, I was astonished. It was just so delicious. The soup itself had a perfect balance to it and was on the slightly salty side but with the herbal aftertaste which I enjoyed very much. Having it along with the meat and the peanuts was another delight. After finishing this, I wished that I could eat some more as I was wanting to try their Chicken Soup too but then, I was clearly very full and could not take any more. I would rate their Herbal Pork Soup at 10/10 . Definitely a must try dish when you are here and worth the RM 5.00 paid for it.

Despite this restaurant looking very ordinary, they definitely have some great food to offer and although they may be very famous in the neighbourhood, not many living outside this area would have even heard of this place and I felt the responsibility of blogging about this place since having tried and been swept off my feet by their excellent food. Definitely one of the best places to get Roasted Chicken & Duck and the Herbal Soup that I mentioned is clearly not to be missed!!!
