Kohinoor @ Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

Todays destination is a restaurant called Kohinoor that is located in Publika, Solaris Dutamas. Since my parents were down for a short break, I decided to take them for some North Indian food for a change. Our usual place is D'Tandoor in Damansara Utama but I wanted to try a different restaurant and came across this restaurant on the web. The reviews that came along when I was surfing were all positive and that built my confidence on this restaurant. Kohinoor is located in Block D3 and hence it is quite a drive in from the entrance. As usual, parking is always a problem here and it is always advisable to use the valet parking services that is available for a fee of RM 15.00 .

Interior of the Restaurant

Interior of the Restaurant
The restaurant was designed and themed like any other high end North Indian restaurants in town. The moment we walked in we were greeted by the Captain. All the staffs here were very friendly and attentive. It seems that their main business happens at night as during lunch, there were a handful of customers around and this was further confirmed by the Captain who mentioned that for dinner, it is always best to make prior reservations as they are mostly full house on most nights and some times, you would need to call up to four days ahead to book. With that, he left us with the menu to decide on the dishes.

The Menu
The above are just some of the pages from their menu. The menu has a whole range of North Indian food and some items from South India. The prices seem on the high side but that is common with any other similar North Indian restaurants nevertheless it is much cheaper when compared to D' Tandoor. We then called upon the Captain once the dishes had been decided. I was not sure if I ordered a little too much as I did not know the platter sizes. As you know in D' Tandoor, what you get is usually a miserable portion size and I was assuming that it may be the same here.Anyway, if there is balance, we could always pack it back.

Coca Cola @ RM 5.00

I ordered the above Coke and it is priced at RM 5.00 . I was expecting a can of Coke but this was poured off the bottle. Anyway, that was fine with me.

Apple Juice @ RM 8.00
My brother ordered the above Apple Juice. I tasted it and it was just okay. Seemed a little diluted to me and there was a lot of sugar added in to the drink. The apple too did not taste fresh. Anyway, I would rate this at 6/10 only.

Milk Shake @ RM 8.00
We also ordered the above Milk Shake and this was very well prepared. This is not the common Milk Shake found here and was made according to the Indian style. It was mainly fresh milk with loads of almonds in it. I would rate this drink at 9/10 .

Papadam with Mint Chutney on the house
While waiting for the dishes to arrive, we were served the above Papadam's with Mint Chutney. Unlike other restaurants which serve a small amount of Chutney, here they gave a full platter of Chutney for us and a full basket load of Papadams. The Chutney here was also very spicy just the way I like it. I would rate their Chutney at a perfect 10/10 .

Aloo Paratha @ RM 8.00 each

Aloo Paratha @ RM 8 each and Butter Naan @ RM 8.00 each
For a start, we ordered three slices of Aloo Paratha which was cut into four pieces each. Aloo Paratha is Paratha bread stuffed with potato's. This came at RM 8.00 each and similarly their Butter Naan's also came at the same price. As you can see from the above photo, the darker ones lying in front are the Aloo Paratha's and the lighter ones were the Butter Naan's. Both were very good and they were very soft and tender. We thoroughly enjoyed their breads. I would rate both of these at 10/10 .

Lasooni Tadkwali Dhal @ RM 14.00
Definitely compared to D'Tandoor, the portions here are relatively large and worth the price paid. This was the first dish to arrive. It is called Lasooni Tadkwali Dhal. It is yellow lentils cooked with onions, tomato, green chili, fresh coriander, garlic, cumin seeds tampered with mustard seeds, curry leaves and whole dried red chilies. The dhal was neither thick not watery and was just made to perfection. There was also a topping of ghee that gave a dose of additional flavouring. Overall, this dish was fantastic and deserves a rating of 10/10 . This dish was finger licking good.

Gosht Saagwala @ RM 20.00
Although the above dish seems like a vegetable dish, it was a mixture of boneless lamb cooked with chopped spinach and freshly ground spices. It was another dish that we enjoyed. There was also a little black pepper that was added to the dish but it was not too spicy. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Aloo Methi @ RM 12.00
Aloo Methi is all about diced potato's sauteed with fenugreek, onions and tomato's. This dish was another good dish and it was very well done again. One thing that I must mention here is that all their dishes are consistent in quantity and quality. This dish once again was lightly spiced and it was nice and went very well with the bread. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Hydrabadi Aloo Kheema @ RM 22.00
This was a fantastic dish, in fact this restaurant served the best Hydrabadi Aloo Kheema that I have ever tried. Hydrabadi Aloo Kheema is a dish that is made from minced lamb and potato's delicately spiced and sauteed. This dish was so perfectly prepared here that I have no comments. Do note that this dish is slightly on the spicy side. All of us enjoyed this dish very much and it deserves a rating of 10/10 .

Kozhi Chettinad @ RM 22.00
This was a devilled Chicken Curry which was cooked to perfection in black pepper sauce. This is a famous South Indian dish which originated in Tamil Nadu. Here, they have excellently prepared this dish and once again do note that it is quite spicy. Another dish that deserves a perfect 10/10 .

That was pretty much our lunch for today. For the four of us, it was just right and the portion sizes were all very satisfying. The food was also consistently good and some dishes were exceptionally good. From my experience of trying a number of North Indian restaurants in the Klang Valley, this seems to be the best. The price is also very reasonable and the service was excellent. We would surely return here again some time soon whenever we need our North Indian fix. Definitely a highly recommended place.
