Restaurant Pontian Wanton Noodles is a chain of restaurants that has a number of outlets in Johor, the Klang Valley and Singapore. It seems that they have been around for 60 years now and I wonder how I missed not knowing about this place prior to this. It was just by chance that I discovered this outlet that is located in SS15, Subang Jaya. Having started in the little town of Pontian, they have surely come a far way by successfully having established this many outlets across various geographies. What caught my attention was their tag line that mentioned that they do not use any preservatives and also their noodles would not end up being soggy when you take away. That's definitely a strong tag line to attract customers.

| The Boss and His Son |
It seems that they have been here in Subang Jaya for years now as the interior and furniture surely does not look recent and have a faded look on them. Nevertheless, the crowd was pretty good when I arrived for dinner today. They occupy two shop lots and are fully air conditioned. The boss and his son were seated right in front of me or perhaps I should say that since all their tables were taken up, the only seat that I got was somewhat a working table right in front of them. All their workers seemed to be foreigners and they were coping very well with the crowd. Even the drinks preparation was handled by them. The food however, came from the kitchen.

The waiters attended to me fairly quickly. They handed me the menu and then moved on giving me some time to decide what I would like to have. The above photos captures their entire menu. From what I can see, they specialise in two dishes, their Wanton Noodles and Laksa. I decided to go for their Wanton Noodles and a drink. I asked the waitress if the basic noodles comes with a soup and she said yes and with that understanding, I did not add on another bowl of Wanton Soup.

Firstly, their Wanton Noodles here is quite unique. You have a choice of the following three sauces as the base sauce; Black Sauce, Chili + Black Sauce and Tomato Sauce. This is definitely something that I have never seen anywhere else. From all that I have seen before, it is always with the Black Sauce and it's great that these guys have other variations to it. I was in the mood for the Black Sauce and went for that. The dish came with a lavish amount of homemade Char Siew and two pieces of homemade Fried Wantons. Their Char Siew was also different in the sense that it lacked the usual dark colour and were thinly sliced. Despite that, they tasted really great. Their Fried Wantons were very crispy but the meat in those Wanton's were ridiculously little. Yet, they tasted great. Their noodles are also made in their own factory in Skudai and is distributed to all branches. Their noodles were full of egg goodness and that made it very springy and tasty. Overall, their Wanton Noodles was quite good and I would rate it at 9/10 . The setback was that the small portion was really small and for a good eater like me, two bowls would be just nice. Now coming to their Wanton Soup that was given as part of the set, that was a little disappointing as I was expecting more steamed Wanton's in them but there were only two tiny pieces and I then called upon the waitress and ordered another helping of the steamed Wanton's as per the menu.

Having been dissatisfied with the quantity, I ordered the above Wanton Soup which came at a price of RM 4.00 per bowl. Inside, you have 10 pieces of the steamed Wanton's. The soup itself was very good and it was satisfying as they did not add any MSG into the preparation and there were loads of fried lard which gave a wonderful taste to the soup. The Steamed Wanton's however were very tiny as you can see from the above photo. The amount of meat included was smaller than my finger nail. But taste wise, it was good. Despite the fact that these are frozen stuffs as they are being transported from the factory to nationwide outlets, they seemed rather fresh to me. I would rate their Wanton Soup at 8.8/10 . Worth giving it a try.

Despite their growth, they have still managed to maintain the quality of the food being served and that is why they still have a good crowd at their premises every day. I would surely recommend this place to friends as I find that their food and prices are quite decent. They may not be the best Wanton Noodles that I have tried but they are still good and would easily slot in for the top 20.
