Satay Station @ Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Restoran Satay Station is a chain of Satay outlets which originally started in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur. Often known as the famous Kampung Pandan Satay, they have recently opened another premium outlet in Mont Kiara. The reason that I have mentioned that this is a premium outlet is simply because the prices here are at least 20% more than their other outlets. However, they still have a huge group of followers who prefer this satay over Satay Kajang Hj. Samuri which is popular nationwide. Their outlet in Mont Kiara is located on the Ground Floor of Mont Kiara Meridian which is just a few hundred meters away from Solaris Mont Kiara.

Restoran Satay Station in Mont Kiara

The Guy preparing the Satay's
This restaurant is clearly visible from the road and most customers usually just park by the curb instead of the paid parking inside the building. They start their business at 5 pm daily and close at 11pm. They are opened every day except on the first and second day of Raya Puasa. This place has a very small inside seating and most of the tables are arranged outside but it is covered. Despite that, on a hot sunny evening, it can tend to be quite hot. When I arrived here at 6 pm today, there were not many customers and I was told that their peak period starts at about 7.30 to 8 pm and goes on till about 10 pm.

The Menu

The Menu
Their menu is just a single laminated sheet which offers limited items. Besides their Satay, the other famous item here is their Mee Rebus. I had initially wanted to try that too but when I saw their menu, the Mee Rebus was highlighted as containing beef in it. I truly appreciate their efforts in spelling this out clearly in their menu as most people would assume that the usual Mee Rebus would not have beef in it and would have just ordered. They were sensitive to the other races and I salute them for that. With that idea dropped, I ordered a dozen of their Chicken Satay's. Here, they only offer Chicken and Beef Satay's. Their prices are definitely quite steep as their Chicken Satay is sold at RM 1.30 per stick and their Beef Satay at RM 1.50 per stick and you would have to order in multiples of half dozens and no less.

Fresh Orange @ RM 4.90
I must say that their Fresh Orange was quite good as it was rather concentrated and did not have any sugar added to it. Comparing the size of the glass as opposed to the price, it is surely cheap. I would rate this drink at 9/10 .

1 Dozen Chicken Satay @ RM 15.60 and Cucumber & Onions @ RM 2.00
Their Satay came in the traditional serving with a piece of banana leaf placed under the food. Most places would give the Onions and Cucumber free of charge but I was surprised to see that they charge RM 2.00 for it and this was only brought to my attention when the bill arrived. Well, being in Mont Kiara, I guess every little thing is money.

Chicken Satay
Each stick of their Chicken Satay has three chunks of meat attached to it. It was very interesting to note that the first chunk was lean meat, the middle one was pure fat and the third one again was lean meat. Of course many would not like this as it is a less healthy option as well as it can be seen as a way to reduce the cost per stick but if you look at it from a culinary standpoint, the fat is what gives it an added taste and if you are able to mix the fat and lean meat in every bite, this could turn out to taste really great and I enjoyed it. This is definitely a unique strategy that I have not noticed in other Satay providers. Their Satay too has an overall darker tone and this must be contributed by the usage of more honey. This satay here was good and I would say that it is equally good to Satay Kajang Hj. Samuri but it is still not the best that I had tried. The best one is still Satay Kolumpo that I had tried in my hometown which I have blogged about in the past. I would rate this satay at 8.5/10 .

Peanut Sauce
Here, the Peanut Sauce is already mixed and unlike Satay Kajang Hj. Samuri, you would not be able to mix the Peanut Sauce with the Chili Paste according to your taste. The Peanut Sauce here too was slightly thicker and definitely had much more oil in it. It was so oily that you can only get to the real Peanut Sauce when you have dipped out at least half of the contents. Taste wise too was just average and for me at least, this was disappointing. I would only rate their Peanut Sauce at 6/10 .

Overall, they definitely have some good Satay to offer and definitely a big change in taste from the famous Satay Kajang Hj. Samuri. Their setbacks include their price which is more than double of what their competitors charge and their Peanut Sauce which needs some improvement. Otherwise, this is a great place to get some decent satay.
