Home & Away - Cafe. Bar. Pool @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur

If you are looking for a bar cum cafe which serves excellent Tamil food and relatively cheap beers, then Home & Away is the place to be in. Located in Desa Sri Hartamas, this is a neighbourhood bar that is a great place to hang out with friends. Besides the great food, the environment is also very safe and comfortable and they even have a pool table for those who are interested.

Home & Away in Desa Sri Hartamas

Lovely Environment
This bar has a mixed crowd of both expatriates and locals. It is a open concept bar and as such, customers can opt to sit either inside or outside along the corridor. The staffs here are friendly and attend to customers needs fairly quickly. They have a number of draught beers besides the bottled ones and also have a wide range of liqueurs and cocktails. We decided to have Carlsberg and it was priced at RM 50.00 for 3 pints which is a very good deal in this part of the city.

The Menu
The above is their food menu and it is typically covering a wide range of Tamil dishes with the exception of a few Western dishes like Chicken and Lamb Chops. Spicy food and beers are definitely an excellent combination and we decided to stick to trying out their Tamil food.

Ikan Bilis @ RM 12.00
Their Ikan Bilis was very good. It was prepared spicy and cooked with green chilies and onions and served with a sprinkle of lime. The salty taste of the anchovies, the sour flavours from the lime and the spiciness from the chilies all blended well and together they were a treat to have with the beers. Definitely a recommended dish here. I would rate this dish at 9.2/10 .

Fried Mushrooms @ RM 10.00
This dish was typically whole Button Mushrooms that were dipped in a slightly spicy and salty flour and deep fried. The good thing about this dish was that you do not see any traces of oil around the dish and the chef had also ensured that the Button Mushrooms were still juicy though deep fried. The setback however was simply that this dish purely derived its taste from the flour coating and it definitely had MSG in it which made you a little thirsty after consuming it. Overall a decent dish. I would rate this at 6.5/10 .

Mutton Varuval @ RM 15.00

Comes With 3 Slices of White Bread
Another well prepared dish. The mutton chunks were very well marinated, definitely something that has been marinated overnight and the meat was tender.Besides having used dry chilies, they have also used a lot of black pepper in this dish making it a very spicy dish. This dish is served with three slices of White Bread. I would rate this dish at 9.4/10 .

Tom Yam Fried Rice @ RM 12.00
This Tom Yam Fried Rice was definitely a good dish and it is served with a fried egg on the top and some Papadams. The unique thing about this dish is that although it is labelled as Tom Yam Fried Rice, it had a strong Tamil flavour to it and it very much reminded me of the Fried Rice that my maternal grandmother used to prepare. If you are thinking about the Tom Yam Fried Rice that is served in Thailand, then this dish is no where close to it but if you are open for a fusion dish, then this would just be the right dish. The name aside, I would say that this dish was fantastic. I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Fried Mixed Sausages @ RM 12.00
This dish was an average dish. It had sliced sausages with loads of egg and some anchovies prepared like how we used to do when we were boy scouts camping out in the jungle. To me, it seemed like a teenagers best effort in bringing out his best culinary skills and you would definitely expect more from a restaurant. A very average dish, edible when hungry but I would not order it again and I would rate it at 5.5/10 .

Prawn Masala Potato @ RM 16.00

Comes with 3 slices of White Bread
The Prawn Masala with Potato was fantastic. It was prepared super spicy and came with loads of small prawns and little chunks of potato. I loved the fact that they had made it slightly wet and having added not only Chili Masala but also ground black pepper, an that too a whole load of it. Definitely a dish that I would order again. I would rate this dish at 9.8/10 .

Chili Chicken @ RM 14.00

3 Slices of White Bread Included
The Chili Chicken was good but not mind blowing. It definitely had all the ingredients required from black pepper to capsicum and spices but lacked the punch that is expected out of this dish. To me, it seemed like a junior chef's first few attempts at this dish. I would rate it at 8/10 .

French Fries @ RM 8.00
These French Fries were definitely deep fried and then simmered with some butter which is a great technique in culinary science but the execution of it had gone slightly wrong which made the dish look a little overdone. Another thing about the fries itself is that they have been fried after being allowed to thaw. I was once advised by a renowned chef that the best French Fries are deep fried directly of the freezer and he had exhibited that to me and to my surprise then, it produced excellent fries. Well, coming back to this dish, I would rate it at 8/10 .

On the whole, I am very pleased with this place and would love to thank my friend for introducing this joint to me. Definitely a place that I would be frequenting more often as I love the food, environment and hospitality here.
