Muhammad Chow Chinese Muslim Kitchen @ Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya

Restaurant Mohammad Chow Chinese Muslim Kitchen is one of the new Chinese Muslim Restaurants that has been creating waves recently. Having been started by two friends, Muhammad and Chow in June this year, this restaurant has been attracting huge crowds to the little township of Bandar Damansara Perdana. Looking at their Facebook page, there has been loads of celebrities that have been visiting them and even tonight, there were a number of them and as always they were almost full house and luckily for us, there was one last table remaining.

Restaurant Muhammad Chow in Damansara Perdana

This was taken when I was leaving as most people had left then
This restaurant is clearly visible from the main trunk road of Damansara Perdana. As you drive in head straight until you see MK Land and Public Mutual offices on your left and shortly thereafter, you would be able to see this restaurant. Having tried the food in a number of Chinese Muslim restaurants in Malaysia, I was very eager to taste their dishes especially after looking at the crowd that they have been attracting.

The Menu
Their Menu is very extensive but I felt that the pricing is slightly on the high side. This could very much be the reason that they have established themselves in Damansara Perdana i.e.to attract the middle to high end income segment. To be honest, there wasn't much of a customer service here as everyone was busy attending to the crowd and honestly, with this kind of crowd, I don't expect any form of personalised service too. Nevertheless, ordering was a breeze.

Watermelon & Lychee Drink @ RM 4.50
This drink was quite well done, was not diluted and a minimal amount of sugar was added to it. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

Iced Lime Drink@ RM 1.90
I felt that this drink is priced quite cheap, bearing in mind the size of the glass and the amount of ice in the drink was minimal. The taste was quite good and overall refreshing. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

Seafood Fried Rice @ RM 8.00
Contrary to what I had thought before, the portions here are really huge and with that discovered, the price now seems quite reasonable to me. It seems that even a small portioned dish would be good for three pax and that's assuming you order a number of dishes to be shared. The Seafood Fried Rice was very well done. There were lavish amounts of Squid, Prawns and slices of Fish in the dish and the flavouring was very much to the Chinese Style. Definitely a good dish and I would rate it at 8.7/10 .

White Rice @ RM 2.00

Soup in Szhechuan  Style @ RM 12.00
The Szhechuan Style Soup came in a large bowl and it was priced at RM 12.00 . The Soup was thick and this I suppose was definitely made so by adding starch in it. There was a strong vinegar and black pepper taste in it making it soury and spicy. Egg Whites were also added to the dish along with some diced chicken meat. Overall, it was a good dish and I enjoyed it. I would rate this dish at 9.2/10 .

Broccoli & Mushroom in Oyster Sauce @ RM 15.00
This was another excellent dish that we thoroughly enjoyed. It came with loads of Broccoli, three different kinds of mushroom, sliced carrots and baby corn in thick Oyster Sauce. The highlight of this dish is the freshness of the vegetables. The method of cooking was also excellent so much so all the vegetables were still crispy when served. I would rate this dish at 9.5/10 .

Nestum Prawns @ RM 25.00
This dish was a disaster. It was definitely the worst Nestum Prawns that I have ever tried. The Nestum was literally stuck to the prawns like a thick coating and it tasted so bland. Besides the Nestum, there was nothing else that I could taste. The Prawns were huge yet tasteless. I would rate this dish at 2/10 .

Kampung Steamed Chicken @ RM 28.00
This dish was just above average. It is one of their specialty dishes but it failed to impress me. Unlike the earlier dish, this was still within acceptable level of taste and would have been radically better if a little more salt was added to the dish. I would rate this dish at 5/10 .

Overall, I would say that this restaurant does serve some good dishes but I have definitely tried Chinese Muslim food in Malaysia that is way better than this and at a fraction of the price. I am sure that some would be unhappy with my opinion here but I can actually point them to those restaurants should they write to me. If I would summarise this place in a single word, it would simply be OVERRATED.

    1. Hi....there used to be one in Kota Damansara but it has closed down. Alternatively, you could try Damansara Utama at the food court. There's a good Halal Dim Sum Place there that opens at night daily....
