Asam Pedas Mamaku @ Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya

Restoran Asam Pedas Mamaku is a new restaurant that just opened up weeks ago in Damansara Damai. This restaurant specialises in one of my favourite Johorean dishes, Asam Pedas. Being a fan of Asam Pedas, I could not help but to drop by to try the food here.

A Simple Set Up

Just A Few Tables
This restaurant is located in Seasons Square, Damansara Damai. It is a rather small restaurant with limited seating spaces. There are just a few tables inside and a few more on the outside along the pavement. Besides those, there is a simple drinks counter and a small cooking space at the rear side of the restaurant.

The Menu
Their menu does have a wide variety of dishes which include Chinese, Indonesian, Malay, Thai and Western dishes but surprisingly their specialty dish of Asam Pedas was nowhere in the menu. I asked the owners why that is the case and she mentioned that most people already know what their specialty is and hence they had omitted that particular dish out of the menu. Sounded like a weird explanation to me. Anyway, she is entitled to her own opinion. Having already decided what I wanted to have, I ordered the Asam Pedas and also selected some sides from the menu. With that, she went off to prepare the food.

Teh O Ice @ RM 1.70
Their Teh O Ice was quite well prepared and mildly sweetened to my preference. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

White Rice

Spicy Sambal
The dishes started arriving rather quickly. Within ten minutes, all the dishes were served. The first to arrive was the above white rice and spicy Sambal paste. The Sambal was really good and went well with the cucumbers. I would rate the Sambal at 9/10 .

Fried Egg @ RM 1.50
The Fried Egg was decent and had chopped onions in it. The only setback with it was that it was too oily and soggy. Otherwise, it tasted fine. I would rate this at 6/10 .

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 4.50

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 4.50
The Kangkung was well prepared. The greens were fresh, it had lots of onions and Belacan in it and the flavours were just right. The price too seems very reasonable for the portion size. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .

Asam Pedas Ikan Pari @ RM 5.50

Closer Look At The Ikan Pari
The Asam Pedas here comes with a choice of three different fish; Pari, Bawal and Kembung and I went for Pari. Priced at RM 5.50, the portion size was acceptable but the gravy was disappointing. For me, Asam Pedas has to be exactly as the name says it....spicy and this dish was not spicy at all. In fact, it just felt like some sour gravy. I definitely expected something much better. I would only rate this dish at 4/10 .

Definitely a disappointing meal for me because I had so much expectations when walking into this restaurant. For Damansara Damai, Cafe Gerobok Danga is still the best when it comes to Asam Pedas.
