Sri Grand City Restaurant @ Jalan Dato Mahmud 11/4, Petaling Jaya

Sri Grand City Restaurant has been around for ages, this used to by one of the restaurants that I used to frequent some 10 years ago as I used to work around this area. Since then, I had not been here again and today  out of the blues, thought of bringing my brother here for a late lunch since he has not been to this restaurant.

Appam and Mee Goreng Prepared Outside the Restaurant

Entrance
The restaurant has not changed much at all, in fact, it remains exactly the same as it was before. It is good that they have kept the Mee Goreng and Appam stall outside the restaurant thus keeping the dining space more pleasant to sit in.

We arrived late this afternoon. Actually having wanted to have lunch, we got stuck in traffic and only managed to reach here at 4.00 pm . The place was buzzing with crowd and most of the people were having tea time snacks. There was a wide spread of cakes and pastries but since we were quite hungry, we decided to have rice instead.

Curries Station
We wanted to have Banana Leaf Meals but the waiter suggested to have rice on the plate instead as most of the vegetables were sold out and it would be a waste for us to pay RM 6.60 for the meal and not get anything much. We then decided to check the menu and we also walked up to the curries station to pick a few other items. Having checked out what's available, we decided to go for the plates.

Rice + Sambar + 1 Vegetable @ RM 4.00 each
The price of the above definitely came as a surprise to us. For a plate of Rice with Sambar and Long Beans Perattal, they charged us RM 4.00 each. This is definitely a premium price to pay for such a simple item.

Rice with Sambar
The Sambar was just so so, it was not up to the mark. Tasted a little bland with not much ingredients inside. I would only rate this at 5/10 .

Long Beans Perattal
The Long Beans Perattal was good. Slightly overcooked, otherwise the spices were just perfect. I would rate this vegetable at 8.5/10 .

Chicken Curry
They served us some plain Chicken Curry in a small bowl. The Chicken Curry was good, aromatic had balanced spices. I would rate this at 8.7/10 .

Mutton Curry @ RM 10.00

Mutton Curry @ RM 10.00
This is the smallest portion available and it was good for three people. Priced at RM 10.00, the portion was good for the price. However, the taste was just mediocre. I was not at all impressed with this dish, in fact, it was a let down. I would only rate this at 6/10 .

Chicken Varuval @ RM 6.00

Chicken Varuval @ RM 6.00
This Chicken Varuval was superb! More towards the spicy side, the Chicken chunks were very soft and tender and it was so delicious. Definitely a recommended dish here. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Sambal Fish @ RM 6.00

Sambal Fish @ RM 6.00
The Sambal Fish again was fantastic! Fried and then added on into the sambal, it was an excellently prepared dish. The sambal too was simply superb and a taste to remember. I would definitely rate this a perfect 10/10 .

Lunch in Progress

That's Me

Lime Ice @ RM 3.50
Priced on the premium side, the Lime Ice was just average. Wasn't something great as it was very bitter. I would rate this at 6/10 .

Teh Tarik @ RM 2.50
The Teh Tarik was nice. Perfectly fixed. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Teh O @ RM 1.20
The Teh O was good too although I find the drinks to be slightly on the high side of pricing. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Overall, the food has a mixed review. Some items were extremely good and some were a let down. The price of the rice on plate with a single vegetable was definitely not acceptable. Though I find the prices on the high side, some of the items are worth revisiting due to the good taste.
