Restauran Moon Kee @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Another new Chinese restaurant that had recently opened in Tanjung Malim would Restaurant Moon Kee. This restaurant is located in Taman Wangsa Jaya which is along the old trunk road heading towards Slim River. This residential area is very easy to locate. Assuming that you are coming from Kuala Lumpur along the old trunk road, keep going straight after the traffic lights near the Hindu Temple. You would come to another set of lights and once the light clears you, continue driving onwards. After about 500 meters, it is best to slow down. Here, you should be able to sight the Hindu Cemetry on your right and shortly after, the entrance to this Taman is located on your left. The moment you turn left, keep going straight and in less than a minute, you would be able to sight this restaurant.

The Restaurant In Taman Wangsa Jaya

Dim Sum Mostly Sold Out

Clean and Tidy

Some Specialty Dishes Listed On The Wall
These guys have a number of things that they offer throughout the day. Dim Sum is one such specialty that starts from breakfast and based on availability, goes on till tea time. In fact, this is the only place in Tanjung Malim that sells Dim Sum and they are all made in house. Those days, there used to be Asia Restaurant in town which was so famous for their Dim Sum and after the proprietors passing on, none of the children wanted to continue the legacy and they all migrated overseas. Such a pity. Besides Dim Sum, they also have Curry Mee for breakfast, Mixed Rice for lunch and some specialty dishes like Fish Head Curry and Bak Kut Teh for dinner. Business is open daily from 8 am till 3 pm and again from 5.30 pm till 10 pm with a short break in between.Their weekly off days are Thursdays. Since I was here around 6 pm, I decided to try their Dim Sum instead as this was one that was at the back of my head for some time now. The owners were quite friendly and the entire family is involved in the business. Even the children who are teenagers were not shy to assist and they too have mastered the art of handling customers fairly well. I insisted that I would like to try their Dim Sum but unfortunately they only had a handful of variety left. That seemed quite okay for me and I just proceeded with that. The lady boss was kind enough to re steam them for me and that took a while. Another thing that I like in this restaurant is the ambiance. It may not seem like much during the day but come night, the lighting was just lovely. It was so soothing and nice. I must applaud them for this.

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.40 per glass

Cutlery and Sauces
While waiting, I ordered myself a glass of Iced Chinese Tea and this was priced at 40 cents per glass. Another good thing here was that each and every table were sufficiently equipped. I did not have to go searching for cutlery or sauces or serviettes. Every table had all that was necessary and it was very convenient.

My Meal For The Day
After a 15 minute wait, the dishes were served. Started with the Dim Sum's and finally the Bao arrived. I shall speak of them in detail below.

Fish & Pork Balls with Sliced Carrots and Fu Chok @ RM 3.30 per plate

Fish & Pork Balls with Sliced Carrots and Fu Chok @ RM 3.30 per plate
All their Dim Sum's were priced at RM 3.30 per plate. Pricey? I think they were fine as these were not the frozen factory made ones. The first one that I tried was their Fish & Pork Balls that came with Sliced Carrots and Fu Chok. The balls were very tasty. The meat was fresh, bouncy, juicy and they were quite huge too. Loved them! I would rate these at 8.5/10 .

Siu Mai @ RM 3.30 per plate

Siu Mai @ RM 3.30 per plate
Their Siu Mai was quite decent. Won't say that it was one that captivated my heart but it was above average. I would rate this at 7/10 .

Pork Rolled With Fu Chok and Filled with sliced Mushrooms @ RM 3.30

Pork Rolled With Fu Chok and Filled with sliced Mushrooms @ RM 3.30

Pork Rolled With Fu Chok and Filled with sliced Mushrooms @ RM 3.30
This was good. Minced Pork Meat with sliced Carrots and Mushrooms  wrapped with Fu Chok and steamed. Oh.... I loved this. It was juicy and so tasty. Good to be eaten on it's own. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Loh Mai Kai @ RM 3.30

Loh Mai Kai @ RM 3.30
I felt that this Loh Mai Kai was not so good. Firstly, the quantity was very little. The ingredients too were very stingy. And finally, the taste was just above average. No, didn't quite enjoy this. I would only rate this at 5/10 .

Char Siew Bao @ RM 1.20 each

Char Siew Bao @ RM 1.20 each
After having tried some of their Dim Sum, I moved on to the final one which was their Char Siew Bao. The bun was soft and fluffy and the ingredients were quite generous. It was tasty too but I feel that we can get better Bao's in Tanjung Malim. It wasn't a taste to remember. I would rate this at 6/10.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about their Dim Sum. Some were nice and some were just above average. Their Char Siew Bao was tasty but nothing great. Unfortunately, this is the only place in town with Dim Sum. Not bad actually, perhaps my expectations were high like that of the old Asia Restaurant. This is definitely better than those mass produced ones but not a master Dim Sum maker. Just someone who knows how to make Dim Sum. That aside, the hospitality was superb. I would definitely return soon to try their other dishes. Who knows, perhaps those could be pretty good and I don't want to miss them by simply assuming.
