Restoran Hock Kee Bak Kut Teh Dan Seafood @ Kajang, Selangor

This evening we were in the mood for some Bak Kut Teh. I have visited a number of restaurants specialising in this dish in Kajang and as usual, I was in the mood to try out another new place. We had some guest as well and that being the case, we could not travel far. So, we opted to return to Hock Kee.

Hock Kee In Taman Sri Langat
As much as this restaurant is famous for their Bak Kut Teh, they also operate as a usual Chinese restaurant serving the entire range of dishes that we would commonly get. This is something that I have never come across. Usually, Bak Kut Teh places do not sell any other dishes and this exception was quite fascinating. Even this evening, there was a large group who were there solely for their Bak Kut Teh and another large pool of customers who were there for their dishes. Interesting combination for sure. The restaurant itself had a large seating area and was attached to a house. Cooking is done by the boss and the lady boss is the one that handles the cash management. Orders are all taken by the staffs. The staffs are very efficient. In fact, the moment they know that you're having Bak Kut Teh, all the condiments are sent over to your table.

White Rice @ RM 1.20 Per Bowl

Bak Kut Teh @ RM 12.00
The standard Bak Kut Teh was priced at RM 12.00 for one pax. The portion was huge and definitely larger than the dry version. There was more meat in this one too. The soup was very different to the one that I am used to. This was much lighter and was slightly sweet. I have tried the Kajang Bak Kut Teh at other restaurants and it wasn't like this. Well, this surely wasn't to my liking. I would give this 6/10.

Dry Bak Kut Teh @ RM 15.00
This was for one pax and it was priced at RM 15.00 . For Kajang, I would say that it is expensive. I would have expected this to be around RM 10 to RM 12 maximum. If I were to comment on the taste of the dish, it was good. Lovely cuts of meat were cooked in a thick spicy gravy. They have also added a lot of dried shrimps which enhanced the taste. Definitely some good stuff. Also, this comes with a small bowl of tea since it was the dry version. I would rate this at 8/10.

Tofu @ RM 4.00

Mushroom @ RM 14.00

Omelette @ RM 10.00
The other sides that we ordered were the Mushrooms, Tofupok and an Omelette. The price of the mushrooms were surprising. RM 14.00 for that small portion and that's totally ridiculous. It wasn't so great as well. Their Tofu Pok also tasted a little old and the texture was rough and stiff. Similarly, the Omelette wasn't great either. If I were to rate these, I would give them 7/10, 5/10 and 7/10 respectively.

Bill For The Day
To summarise our dining experience, I have got to say that this is one expensive Bak Kut Teh place. Most of the dishes that we tried were not up to our expectations. Some were even lacking in terms of freshness. The only thing that we enjoyed is their Dry Bak Kut Teh which was very good. Their Soup Bak Kut Teh was a tad too sweet for me as well. If I return, it would be solely for their Dry Bak Kut Teh.
