I have just landed in Medan, the largest city in Sumatra and the fourth largest city in Indonesia by population. It was a rather late flight and by the time I arrived at the hotel, it was close to 9 pm and I was just too tired to head out and look for some local food. I am staying at Favehotel which is located along Jl S. Parman, right in the middle of the city. This is part of a large group and they are famous for the high end hotels under the branding Aston Group. Favehotel is a new brand that has been created recently and is very much targeted at the three star category. Of late, many outlets has been opened and they have become a serious player in this space.
My Room in Favehotel, Medan |
The rooms are nice and the comfort factor is excellent. The only setback would be their room service is limited to certain hours unlike the four and five star hotels which operate round the clock. Here, room service is only available from 7 am till 10.30 pm.
Their Room Service menu is limited to a few items only. I guess those must be the common ones that people order and that is why they have limited the offering to just those. Of course, their restaurants have a full fledged menu but they do not deliver the rest to the rooms. As you can see, the room service offering is purely for Indonesian cuisine. Prices are higher than what you would pay outside but it is still not very expensive.
Iced Tea |
Crispy Chicken Fried Rice @ IDR 40,000++ |
After having gone through their brief menu, I ordered myself a plate of Crispy Chicken Fried Rice and this came with a tall glass of Iced Tea. The total set was priced at IDR 40,000++ which would be approximately RM 12.00 . Do note that the Service Tax in Indonesia is charged at 21% and this price is not inclusive of those charges. The room service itself was quite efficient. From the time of order, they delivered the food in less than ten minutes and the portion was huge.
Fried Rice |
Prawn Crackers (Keropok Udang) |
The Fried Rice was truly delicious and it was the typical Indonesian style which clearly was on the spicy side. Not only was the paste spicy, they even added more cut chilies into the dish and that was just excellent since I am one who loves spicy food. Nevertheless, I won't say that it was too spicy and I am sure that the level of spiciness would be okay for Malaysians. Their Keropok Udang was fresh as well and it went really well with the rice.
Crispy Chicken |
Eggs & Pickled Veggies |
The Crispy Chicken was just awesome. I loved the marination and they had been deboned. The chicken was really crispy on the outside and so juicy on the inside. Truly excellent. On the sides, there were some eggs as well as pickled vegetables which were just perfect for the rice. 8/10 would be my rating for this dish.
If you're staying at Favehotel S. Parman Medan and looking for a quick meal, I would recommend going for their room service. Limited menu but the food is really good. The Fried Rice that I tried was lovely and the Crispy Chicken was excellent. Reasonable prices too unlike the bigger brands.
