Gandhi's Vegetarian Restaurant @ Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

Once upon a time in the early 90's, almost every night I used to have my dinner at Gandhi's Vegetarian Stall in Brickfields and Mr. Gandhi himself used to do the cooking then. He was a very good friend and when I got temporarily relocated to another city, I lost touch with him. After all these years, I am now visiting their restaurant in Brickfields which is now located in Scott  Sentral Service Suites. I am glad to see that the business has been taken to the next level by the children.

Buzzing With Customers
When we arrived here tonight, it was close to midnight and yet, the place was crowded. All the waiters seemed to be so busy and I can't blame them for not being to be able to attend to customers immediately. After some waving, the waiter landed at our table and handed the menu over to us.

The Menu
The menu has definitely been expanded since their father's time. Prices have gone up slightly but it still is within acceptable range. Once we were ready to order, the waiter was flagged down. He took our orders and then disappeared again.

Teh O @ RM 1.00

Masala Tea @ RM 2.00

Masala Coffee @ RM 2.80
The prices of drinks here are weird. Teh O is listed as RM 1.30 but the waiter charged us RM 1.00 . Then their Masala Coffee was written by the waiter as RM 2.30 but the daughter at the cashier charged us RM 2.80 . Could be a mistake and hence it is best to go through the prices before paying and comparing them with the menu to make sure the prices are correct. As for the Teh O, it was nice and I would rate it at 8/10 . Their Masala Tea was nice but they were stingy with the spices and tea leaves and hence gave us a light flavoured drink which was not satisfactory. I would rate their Masala Tea at 6/10 . Their Masala Coffee was the same too and I would rate it at 6.5/10 . The drinks were a definite disappointment!

Vegetarian Nasi Lemak @ RM 4.50

Some Kind Of Vegetarian Rendang

Vegetarian Anchovies

Spicy Sambal
Their Vegetarian Nasi Lemak was priced at RM 4.50 per plate and it came with the Rice, Sambal, vegetarian Anchovies and some kind of vegetarian Rendang. For me, the packet Nasi Lemak during their father's time was much better. Here the rice and Sambal were nice but the vegetarian Anchovies and vegetarian Rendang were nothing great. I would rate this at 6/10 . Honestly, my expectations were much higher and was disappointed by this. Perhaps for those who have not tried Mr. Gandhi's Nasi Lemak those days would love this.

Vegetarian Mutton Fried Rice @ RM 6.00

Vegetarian Mutton Fried Rice @ RM 6.00
Their Vegetarian Mutton Fried Rice was really good. The flavours were awesome and the vegetarian mutton was well marinated with spices. Portion was also decent for the price paid. Thoroughly enjoyed this and I would rate this at 9.4/10 . A highly recommended dish!

Vegetarian Mee Goreng @ RM 5.00

Vegetarian Mee Goreng @ RM 5.00
Their Vegetarian Mee Goreng was once again very good. Though slightly on the greasy side, the taste was good and it was prepared quite similar to the Penang Style of making this dish. I would rate this at 9/10 . A good dish!

Vegetarian Satay and Tandoori Chicken
We also ordered a Vegetarian Tandoori Set and a Vegetarian Chicken Satay Set. More details to be found below.

Vegetarian Satay @ RM 5.00 per set
Their Vegetarian Satay was quite impressive, tasted almost similar to the real one. A set comes with five skewers and this is served with some peanut sauce. This would be a dish that I would highly recommend. My rating for this would be 9.8/10 .

Vegetarian Tandoori Set @ RM 7.50 per set
Their Vegetarian Tandoori comes in a set of five and is priced at RM 7.50 per set. One could also order individual skewers which are priced at RM 1.50 each. I did not enjoy this as it seemed very salty for me and it surely had a lot of MSG as I felt terribly thirsty after having this. For me, this would only deserve a rating of 7/10 .

Peanut Sauce
Their Peanut Sauce was awesome, I loved it very much. Made with very little oil, it tasted sweet and spicy and went very well with both their Vegetarian Satay and Tandoori. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Final Bill
On the whole, it was a satisfying dining experience for us. All were good except for the Nasi Lemak which could have been better. Otherwise, definitely a fantastic meal and would be one of the vegetarian restaurants that I would recommend.

  4. Thats a great restaurant at a posh location Kuala Lumpur. This restaurant's culinary culture is a proven advantage for its growing popularity. It basically reminds me of my home back in Kerala. Thanks for sharing with us. cant really wait to visit this.
