Restoran Mydina is one of those restaurants that is very busy during lunch hours. Compared to the other restaurants that are located in Megan Avenue 1, this restaurant in particular has a much large crowd all day long. 

My Lunch @ RM 9.00

One of the reasons why they are packed during lunch hours is because they offer Nasi Kandar style of dishes and for this alone, there is such a long queue. I was here slightly late this afternoon and many of the food items had already been sold out. That being the case, I had to settle for some Mutton Perattal and Egg Sambal. Even all their vegetables had been sold out and they were waiting for the another round of vegetables to arrive.

I would say that their Mutton Perattal was nice, my only complaint would be the large cuts which isn't quite my preference. Taste wise, I would rate it at 8/10. Their Egg Sambal was on the sweet side, in fact it was a tad too sweet for me. I would have preferred it to be a little more spicy. I would rate this at 7/10. Their Fish Curry was nice. The flavours were good and it was as per my expectations. I would rate this at 8/10. 

Vegetarian Mee Goreng @ RM 5.00

I had a friend with me who was a vegetarian and they obliged to prepare Vegetarian Mee Goreng for him. Priced at RM 5.00 , it came with some decent ingredients and the portion was good. In fact, taste wise it was nice as well. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

In summary, Restoran Mydina does offer some good food. Their Nasi Kandar variety is decent but it is priced on the high side. Since they are located right in the city center, I guess that this is inevitable. Their Mee Goreng was good too. Do come early as their Nasi Kandar variety tends to get sold fast.

Grandmama's @ Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur

Having had a close friend visit me from Bangkok, I thought of taking them to one of the good restaurants in Kuala Lumpur for a meal. But then, the schedules changed and so did the hotels. Instead of KL Hilton, they stayed at Double Tree in Intermark, Jalan Tun Razak. Not having much choice and with the limited time that we had at our perusal, I brought them over to Grandmama's that is located at the Intermark building.

Local Coffee @ RM 7.50

The restaurant is located in quite a prominent location within Intermark. Even when you come from the entrance, Grandmama's is clearly visible. The reception was fantastic and they had greeted us right from the moment that we had walked in. They had a very elaborate menu covering a range of Chinese and Malay dishes. After placing our orders, it was a brief wait before the dishes were served. The reception that we got was five star for sure. The first to arrive was the drinks and I ordered some Local Coffee and this was priced at RM 7.50 per jug. The coffee was good, not sure which brand they had used and it was one to savour. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

In about 20 minutes, the dishes started arriving. One thing that I observed was the fact that the waiter or captain did not restrict us from ordering more despite knowing the fact that each dish is good for four pax. That is a very negative thing that I would take away. Apparently they simply seemed to reap the most out of each customer. The first dish to arrive was the Squid with Salt & Pepper and this was priced at RM 29.00 . Honestly, the dish was a flop. It was nowhere near my expectations and the taste was an overdose of MSG. My rating for this shall be 3/10. The next dish that arrived was the Pucuk Paku with Belacan which cost us RM 17.00 . Again, another dish that was a disaster. The Paku itself was nowhere near the pucuk. It was all old Paku and what we got was plainly stems that was chewy and tasteless. This was one of those moments that I felt like a cow. My rating for this shall be 2/10.

Fish Head Curry @ RM 43.00

Seafood Beancurd @ RM 31.00

Their Fish Head Curry was really good. It was the only dish today that met out expectations. The flavours were awesome and the curry was perfect. On the contrary, their Seafood Beancurd was another disaster dish.It was made using reasonably fresh ingredients but taste wise, it was totally bland. Ratings wise, I would rate their Fish Head Curry at 8/10 and their Seafood Beancurd at 4/10.

Grandmama's is definitely a big brand that is making waves in the Klang Valley. They are strategically located at premium locations throughout the Klang Valley and are expanding aggressively.  We tried a number of dishes this evening but unfortunately returned dissatisfied. Having paid premium prices, we expected much more based on the hype but sadly the only dish that is worthy of mention is their Fish Head Curry. The rest were way below average though we got a royal reception. Ultimately, if the food is not good, regardless of your service levels, customers would be turned off. Spending RM 160 for a meal is not something that every Malaysian could afford often and when they do so, they'd definitely expect value for money which is clearly lacking here. One that the management should be working on if they wish to stay for the long run.

D' Sumptuous @ Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur

A few days back, I had to visit a friend who was admitted to Institut Jantung Negara and that was when I came across this outlet. D' Sumptuous is located on the upper level of the cafeteria in IJN. For those who have not been to this cafeteria, it has a lower floor which has a number of food stalls and the upper deck, which is a premium floor that is solely occupied by D' Sumptuous. I am not sure if they have other outlets in the Klang Valley but based on the details in their receipt, their corporate headquarters is based in Wangsa Maju.

The upper deck was very impressive. They had a massive counter in a U shaped design that spanned across half of the seating area. Unlike the usual food court furniture, here they were mostly private seating with sofa sets and some coffee tables. It felt more like a dining hall in a hotel rather than a cafeteria in a hospital.

Their menu had a good spread of dishes across various cuisines and they were reasonably priced. Of course this is not to be compared with coffee shop prices but lets say they were on par with those air conditioned restaurants. But it is not something that I would complain. The environment was exquisite and I would not even mind having business meetings here. As for the timing, I was here quite early in the morning and many of their main courses were not ready and that's very much understandable. Mostly what was available were their breakfast items. Since it has been a while that I had Dim Sum, I decided to go for those.  

Otak Otak Dim Sum @ RM 4.90

These Dim Sum's are made by Muslims and you tend to get some unique varieties like this Otak Otak Dim Sum which is something that you will never find in a Chinese Dim Sum place. Per set is priced at RM 4.90 and it comes in three's. That is fairly reasonable looking at the size of these dumplings. The first one that I tried is this Otak Otak Dim Sum which is the one laid on the left. A very unique taste that I thoroughly enjoyed. The texture was good and it was fresh. I would give this a 8/10. 

Mushroom Dim Sum @ RM 4.90

Their Mushroom Dim Sum's were pretty good too. The staple meat in all their Dim Sum's is chicken and in this case, it was mixed with mushrooms. A lovely blend of ingredients and it tasted equally good. This too deserves a rating of 8/10. 

Black Pepper Dim Sum @ RM 4.90

This Black Pepper version was excellent. What I loved most about this was the fact that I could actually taste those course ground pepper with each bite and they were very generous with it. If you're into such spicy food, then this is a must try. I would give this a 9/10. 

Salted Egg Dim Sum @ RM 4.90

Another good one but I felt that it could have been better. Since the salted egg was only placed at the tip, the chicken meat very much dominated the taste. Alternatively, they should have added more salted egg and that would have had a totally different effect. This I would give it a 7/10. 

Sweet & Chili Dip Sauce

From the four varieties that I tried, I very much enjoyed the Black Pepper version followed by the other two and the one that I enjoyed the least was the Salted Egg version. Perhaps since I love salted eggs very much, my expectations were much higher. Nevertheless, the food was good and surely it is one that I would very much recommend here. These were definitely some good quality Halal Dim Sum's.

Gloria Jean's Coffees @ Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur

When it comes to cafe's, most of the time I would be heading to Starbucks or Coffee Bean and though I have come across Gloria Jean's a number of times, I have never set foot into any one of their cafe's. Having been here at Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) this morning, I was looking for a place to have breakfast and since I have tried all the other outlets in the cafeteria, I decided on giving this place a try instead. This outlet is located  at the Lobby Area, old wing. Impossible to miss the place as it is very close to the main entrance to the hospital.

It isn't that big a place actually. At most, they can accommodate roughly 30 pax at any one time. I guess this is more than enough for them as most people would prefer to head over to the cafeteria as the food there is much cheaper. However, for people like me who would need to do some work on their laptop's while having breakfast or even perhaps a conducive place for discussions, then this would be an ideal choice. Their WiFi connection is very good. Perhaps better than what we get at Starbucks.

Choices were okay, very much similar to their other competitors. They had a selection of buns & pastries along with some breakfast sets that comes with a drink. I choose their Glorious Breakfast Set and this was priced at RM 15.90 . Since that came with a Coffee, there was no need for me to get an additional drink. Having paid for the items, I returned to my table.

It was a mild bodied coffee, perhaps slightly milder to the brew that we get at their competitor's. Nevertheless, it was nice and I enjoyed it. And yes, the drink was sent over in around 10 minutes. I believe they were a little shorthanded, Since I was busy with my stuffs, I wasn't too bothered with the turnaround time. Taste wise, I would rate this at 8/10 .

The set came with two thick slices of bread, some eggs, baked beans and two chicken sausages. For the price, the portion was decent.

The bread was just okay for me. Perhaps a little dry and too thick a cut. I am not sure if that is how it should be but based on my taste buds, it could have been better. This kind of bread goes best with soups and not these kind of sides. I would rate this bread at 6/10 .

Baked Beans & Sausages

The Baked Beans was just okay, not the best of quality. Probably some local brand. I would rate this at 6/10. The Chicken Sausages was not bad, but once again a little too dry. This I would rate at 6/10 too. 

Eggs

The Eggs however were great! Absolutely loved them. Shows the skill of the chef. In the whole set, this is undoubtedly the winner and I would rate these at 8.5/10 . Loved them! 

Overall, a decent breakfast it was. Not sure how their other items would be tasting and it seems like there's quite a bit of complains on their Facebook page, both on the food as well as the staffs. For me, based on today's visit, the staff were great. They were quick and polite. No complaints as far as that was concerned. Food however could have been better for sure.

I happened to visit a friend who was admitted to Institut Jantung Negara this morning. Since I was a little too early for the visitation hours, decided to hit their Food Court for breakfast as that would help to kill some time and by the time I am done, it would be just nice to visit him in the ward.

The Food Court is located on the new wing, very close to the multi tier car park. There are just five stalls here. Three that sell food right from morning, one that sells mixed rice catering particularly for the lunch crowd and another one selling drinks. Having had limited choices, only three vendors were my options. One was a vegetarian stall, the other was one selling noodles and the third one would be a western food outlet. The place was packed with people but fortunately tables were available. The place was also very clean and air conditioned with free WiFi. One thing is that all the stalls here only operate from 7 to 7. So, there is definitely no place within this hospital for people to have dinner or supper.

They had a good variety but prices were definitely steep. Not a place for common man to have his meal. Manned by a majority of Indonesian staffs, the place was buzzing with customers who had to wait ages to get their meal. It took me a while to register my orders too as she kept scratching her head a number of times before keying in my orders. Finally, having successfully done that, I was told to wait for a few minutes for my orders to be ready. Few minutes became ten and then twenty and finally when I was about to loose my fuse, it was ready. Imagine those pregnant people who had to just stand and wait the same length of time, I felt truly sorry for them. After all, mine should have not taken so long as it was not a main dish. Just some toasts which should have been prepared in a matter of minutes. Staffs not competent or insufficient hobs. Moreover, being in business this long, they should know the trend and prepare some of those before hand. Would that be such a difficult task? Just not sure which was the case. Finally when I got my dishes, I was utterly put off. Will tell you shortly why that happened.

Such A Flimsy Knife

Being a place that serves roasts and burgers, they should have proper cutlery. Yes, the fork and spoon were metal ones but the knife? It was the easily breakable, flimsy type that I just hate. Luckily I did not order a main meal and I felt truly sorry for those that had. I am very certain that they would have given up eating the correct manner and would have resorted to using their hands. Such a shame.

Weird Looking Cucumber Slices

The first dish that I ordered was Egg on Toast and this was premium priced at RM 4.00 per set. There were just two slices of toast bread, some fried eggs and two thinly sliced cucumbers. The picture shows scrambled eggs and what I got was this weird looking fried egg. Come on guys, being run and owned by a culinary trained individual from a reputable French institution, this should not have happened. I did not ask for Fried Eggs and Toast. I asked for Eggs on Toast and well, literally you are right but definitely not technically. At least should have given me eggs with cream or cheese. That would have been something that I would have accepted. Had she, the owner not transferred the knowledge adequately? The toast too was not great. It was just mediocre. A big regret ordering this and definitely not worth the price. I would rate this at 3/10 . That's about the best that I would give.

Also priced at RM 4.00 , this came with two slices that were cut into halves and some honey on the sides. Anytime better than the previous dish but still not good. Sorry, I am just fussy with food, whether paid by myself or even one that I am treated to. The bread should have been dipped deeper into the beaten eggs as another name for this is eggy bread. That was a major concern but fortunately, honey was my saviour. Just passable and I would rate this at 6/10 . For this, I am okay with paying the price of RM 4.00 .

The first dish that I had was truly disappointing but the second one was okay. A humble request to the management would be to better train their staffs on crowd management and also to make available metal knives for customers' convenience. I truly hope that improvisations are done and customers' would experience better engagement and food in future.
