Ravi's Banana Leaf Restaurant @ Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Of late, I have been visiting Mont Kiara quite often and because of that, I have had the opportunity to dine more often at Ravi's Banana Leaf Restaurant. Somehow, I find their food to have been improved so much over the years and nowadays, whenever I am here around Solaris Mont Kiara, it is a must for me to at least have a Tosai at this restaurant.

Banana Leaf Rice Meal
We usually end up coming here around 10.30 am and at that hour, we would usually have some breakfast items. This afternoon, we came here at around 12 noon and I did not want to miss the chance of enjoying their Banana Leaf Rice Meal. I am not sure what their set price is since a friend paid for the meal but if I remember rightly, it was around RM 8.50 per set. This comes with unlimited top ups of rice, curries and vegetables. And for the price, they offer four vegetables which seems like a good deal, especially around this upmarket area of Mont Kiara.

Four Vegetables
Four vegetables were served along with some Appalam, Pickles and Rasam. Taste wise, they were all good. Each and every vegetable had been perfectly done and they were most importantly fresh. My rating for their veggies would be 8/10.

Sambar

Vegetable Kulambu
Both their curries, Sambar as well as the Vegetable Kulambu was wonderful. I am totally in love with the curries here as they are amazingly good and a step above most South Indian restaurants. My rating for both shall be 9/10.

For a good Banana Leaf Rice Meal in Mont Kiara, my vote would be for Ravi's Banana Leaf Restaurant. Their curries are extremely tasty and I find their vegetables to be good as well as fresh. Speedy service as well.

Ravi's Banana Leaf @ Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

It has been a long time since I last visited Ravi's Banana Leaf Restaurant that is located in Solaris Mont Kiara. This morning, we happened to be here for a breakfast meeting and that was how I landed here at Ravi's. I used to frequent their outlet in Kota Damansara which wasn't to my liking but I was told that the food in this outlet is pretty good. With an open mind, I went on with my orders.

The Restaurant In Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Teh Tarik
I must say that the service levels at this restaurant was excellent. The staffs were very attentive and were quick to serve their customers. This is in total contrast to their other outlet in Kota Damansara. I ordered a glass of Teh Tarik and it was just perfect. Absolutely no complaints as it was really good. My rating for this drink is 9/10.

Tosai with Tomato Chutney, Coconut Chutney and Sambar

Rava Tosai with Sambar, Tomato Chutney and Coconut Chutney
In a matter of minutes, the food was served. In fact, at first I had only ordered the Plain Tosai which came with some Tomato Chutney, Coconut Chutney and Sambar. The food was so good and so were the curries. In fact, their Sambar was drinkable. Having loved the food, I had ordered another Rava Tosai as well. Both Tosai's were excellent and my rating for these shall be 9/10. Both Chutney's deserve 9/10 as well and their Sambar deserves a 10/10. Amazing food and I am coming back again for their Banana Leaf Rice Meals. After having visited this restaurant, I have to agree that the food at this particular outlet is really good.

Leaf Dining @ Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Leaf Dining is one of my favourite lunch spots in Mont Kiara. I mainly come here for their lovely Thali sets which I find to be truly good. This morning, I was here a little early and was looking for a place to have breakfast. Most outlets would only be opening at around 10 am and this seemed like the only available place for me. Having not had some good South Indian breakfast in a while, I decided to drop by.

The above are a few pages from their menu but most of those items are only available from 11 am onwards. At this hour, basic tiffin items were available. Besides the usual Tosai and Idli, I wanted to have something that I have not had in a while. I checked out the items that they had and finally decided to go for some Puttu with Venthaya Kulambu as this is something that I have not eaten in a very long time.

Puttu with Venthaya Kulambu
Their Puttu was definitely good. It was moist, soft and had a lovely texture to it. Their Venthaya Kulambu was awesome as always. Only if you do not take spicy curries, then you could perhaps have this with some other curry. My rating for both the items shall be 9/10.

Besides their Thali Meals that are available during lunch, Leaf Dining Restaurant does offer some fantastic South Indian breakfast options too. Many food items that are not commonly available at restaurants are to be found here. Despite being located in Mont Kiara, I find their prices to be very reasonable.

Fahrenheit 600 @ Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Fahrenheit 600 is a restaurant that would probably be already known to most KL'ites and it is only recently that I managed to visit them. That too, was because of a client who was based in Mont Kiara and we happened to meet late at night for dinner.

They have a very impressive menu and they cater for both vegetarians and non vegetarians as well. Every section of their menu had clearly spelled out the ingredients and labelled their dishes as vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. For the kind of reputation that they have, I felt that their prices were very reasonable as well.

Homemade Sauces

Pasta Napoli @ RM 21.90
Services are amazing and even if you are attracted to a seemingly non vegetarian dish, they are able to turn it around as a vegetarian dish. That's the kind of personalised service that you get here. Another one that I would love to promote would be their homemade sauces. Their own version of Tabasco Sauce was simply mind blowing. I would rate this at 9/10. Their Pasta Napoli which is another vegetarian dish was great. Do note that I was with another vegetarian and all the dishes that we went for tonight were vegetarian dishes. Again, another dish that was rich with cheese and it was a total delight. My rating for this shall be 9/10 as well.

Vegetarian Version of Customised Tacos Dish @ RM 24.90

Fahrenheit 600 Pizza @ RM 27.90
That Tacos that you see is supposedly to come with chicken and on special request, they had made it purely vegetarian and rich with goats cheese. A brilliant dish and my rating for it shall be 8/10. Their house famous Fahrenheit 600 Pizza was another blissful dish. Priced at merely RM 27.90, it was heavenly and I loved the crust that was so soft and good. My rating for this shall be 9/10.

Regardless of what your choice is, vegetarian or non vegetarian Western dishes, Fahrenheit 600 does a great job. Even if the item on the menu seems to be non vegetarian, they are prepared to go the extra mile to make a vegetarian version of that same dish for you. Lovely food, awesome ambiance, amazingly friendly & understanding waiters and reasonably priced food. A highly recommended restaurant!

Leaf Dining @ Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

Another favourite place of mine in Kuala Lumpur for Banana Leaf Rice Set Meals would be Leaf Dining that is located in Solaris Mont Kiara. I have been patronising this place for a number of years now and gladly, the food has been consistently good and reasonably priced.

The Menu

The Menu
The highlight at this restaurant during lunch hours is their Banana Leaf Rice Set Meals. For a reasonably heavy eater, the portions that comes with this set is good enough. For those who would like to have a very heavy meal, you could opt for the other set that comes with Rice and Chapati as well. As for their non vegetarian items, you could walk over to the end of the restaurant, have a look at the items and pick your favourite dishes. This is better than ordering at the table because when you say chicken, they may have five different types of chicken dishes and most often, the staffs do not tell you. So, best to head over and choose them yourselves.

Comes In A Thali But Served On Banana Leaf

Set Meal @ RM 7.40
For RM 7.40, you get rice, free flow of curries, three veggies, pickles, pickled chili, some chutney, fried veggies, Appalam, some sweets and Rasam. And despite being labelled as a Thali Set, there is no limitation as to the amount of rice that you could have. I would say that this is a very good spread for the price.

Lovely Vegetables

Kesari And Other Items
All their vegetables were fresh, not overcooked and they were tasty. Not only these, even the extras like Kesari etc were very tasty. My rating for these shall be 8/10.

Sambar

Vegetable Kulambu

Rasam
Their Sambar came with lots of vegetables and similarly, their Vegetable Kulambu was wonderfully spiced and it was so good. My rating for the Sambar shall be 8/10 and 9/10 for the latter. Rasam was tasty as well and I shall give this 8/10.

Leaf Dining is a restaurant that I have been visiting for almost a decade now and even after all these years, the food is still consistently good. For me, this is one of my favourite places in the Klang Valley for Banana Leaf Rice Meals. The food is tasty, speedy service and very reasonable prices despite being located in Mont Kiara.

Ekkamai Bar & Thai Kitchen @ Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

A friend of mine recommended giving this place a try saying that the food here was very good and the way that he had been promoting this restaurant really made me want to visit this place. This restaurant is located on Level G2, Block C5 in Solaris Dutamas. Having had a meeting here earlier in the day made it all the more convenient for me and here I am at this restaurant.

Outdoor Seating Area

Value For Money Set Lunches

Tea Time Promotions
This restaurant was not too difficult to find. If you follow the block numbers, you would hardly miss this place. They have a indoor and outdoor seating area and the ambiance was just lovely. Besides the Ala-Carte Menu, one could also go for their set meals which looks pretty good to me.

Cutlery

Iced Green Tea @ RM 10.00

Steamed Rice @ RM 3.00
Ordering was a breeze and the waiters were very professional. In a matter of minutes the cutlery along with the drinks were served. Some may find the pricing here to be a little steep but I guess for the locality, it's quite acceptable.

Green Chicken Curry @ RM 28.00

Spicy Calamari @ RM 20.00
I usually don't go for Green Curry because none of the places that I have come across in Malaysia does it as good as what you get in Thailand. But since this came highly recommended, I went for it. True enough, it was really something and tasted just like the one that you would get in Thailand. Perfectly balanced flavours and it was mildly spicy. My rating for this shall be 9/10. Their Spicy Calamari was another excellent dish. It was so good that I did not even have to go for the dip sauce. Crunchy, juicy and addictive. Again, 9/10 is what this preparation deserves.

Chicken Cashew Nut @ RM 29.00

Kailan @ RM 18.00
The Chicken Cashew Nut was slightly on the spicy side but taste wise, it was heavenly. Very generous with the ingredients and it was awesome. 10/10 would be my rating for this. Their Kailan was another excellent dish. Just look at the freshness of those leaves. 9/10 would be my rating for this.

I have visited most of the premium Thai restaurants in the Klang Valley. Most of them charge premium prices but not everything tastes great there. Ekkamai however does an amazing job with the dishes. Each and every dish that we tried was good, really good and I won't say that their prices are very high. Slightly pricey but it was totally worth it. For great Thai food in the Klang Valley, I would strongly recommend Ekkamai.

Jack's Curry House @ Solaris Dutamas (Publika), Kuala Lumpur

Jack's Curry House is another newly opened restaurant in Solaris Dutamas (Publika) serving Banana Leaf Meals. I saw their advertisements on Facebook and they seemed to be running some good promotions for the month of November since they had just started operations this month. Being a Banana Leaf Food lover, my brother and I decided to check them out this weekend.

Jack's Curry House in Publika

Large Indoor and Outdoor Seating Spaces

The Curries Station
As always, we were late and were here for a late afternoon lunch. At this hour and being a weekend, there was not much crowd here. The place was very clean and the staffs were very friendly. I am sure that they have not gotten much exposure yet as there are just a handful of Indian restaurants in this locality, else they would surely be full house.

Food Prices

Food Prices

Food Prices
I was very surprised to see their pricing. All the items were competitively priced and definitely very cheap for this part of Kuala Lumpur. Besides the above, they were also running some value sets specifically for the month of November 2014. Otherwise, the above pricing shall remain. I then went over to their curries station to check out the variety that they had for the day. They surely had a decent spread, not all the items listed were available. I believe this is due to the fact that they have not gotten much exposure yet and hence preparing too much food without takers shall just be a waste. Nevertheless, the spread was still good.

Basic Banana Leaf Meal @ RM 6.00
Their basic Banana Leaf meal comes with Rice, unlimited gravy, three variety of vegetables, fried bitter gourd, Papadams, Moor Milagai (pickled chilies), Rasam and some pickles. Do note that their portions of vegetables were lavish and this includes the fried bitter gourd and they kept coming back to me later to add on more vegetables. My brother however wanted to just have his meal on a plate and so his was RM 1.50 for plain white rice and extra RM 1.50 for two vegetables added on. I would reckon that too to be very cheap. Assuming I just went for a plate meal, then my lunch would only cost me RM 3.00 which a very good deal on this part of town.

Stir Fried Bean Sprouts
Their Stir Fried Bean Sprouts were pretty good and they were fresh and not overcooked. Mildly spicy, this was definitely well prepared. I would rate this vegetable at 8/10 .

Stir Fried Cabbage
Their cabbage was also nice but slightly on the oily side. Nevertheless, it was decent and I would rate this at 6.5/10 .

This was awesome. Cooked with loads of dhall and ghee, this tasted really good. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Papadams, Moor Milagai and Pickles
Their Papadams too were fresh and crisp, not the foldable type. The Moor Milagai once again was fresh and their Pickles (Oorgai) was again good. Do note that they kept coming back to me to top these items up as they were running out.

Fried Bitter Gourd
This was really good and being a fan of Bitter Gourd, I just come not help falling in love with this dish. They were fried to perfection, crisp and deliciously marinated. Excellent dish! I would rate this at 9.5/10 . Do observe the portions too, it was huge and part of the Banana Leaf Meal set without additional charges.

Sambar
I first tried out their Sambar. It was good and had balanced flavours. Definitely a good preparation and there is nothing much to comment about this. I would rate this at 8.3/10 .

Fish Curry
Their Fish Gravy was off. It was watery, kind of diluted and not up to the mark. Taste was also quite average. There is lots of improvement that needs to go into this dish. I would only rate this at 6/10 .

Rasam
To be honest, their Rasam was horrible! I am not sure who made this because the rest of the items were quite good and this being horrible, was indeed a huge gap. Not drinkable material. I would only rate this at 2/10 .

Chicken Perattal @ Promo Price RM 3.00 (Usual Price RM 6.00)
This was one of their promotional items. Go for a Banana Leaf Meal combo with Chicken Perattal for RM 9.00 only. Otherwise, it would have been RM 6 for the meal and RM 6 again for the Chicken Perattal. Definitely a good deal. The Chicken Perattal was very good. Mostly meaty chunks with very minimal bones and it was prepared on the spicy side with lots of spices making it a really great dish. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I would rate this dish at 9.3/10 .

Mutton Varuval @ RM 7.50

Mutton Varuval @ RM 7.50
This again was a good dish but it was not the best that I have tried. The plus points here is that it was all meat with no fat and very little bones. The chunks too were marinated well. The minus is that there could have been more spices added to this to have made it anytime better. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

Prawn Sambal @ RM 8.00

Prawn Sambal @ RM 8.00
The above Prawn Sambal was excellent. The dish came with a decent portion of prawns and some small cubes of potato's in a thick and spicy gravy. Wonderfully prepared and I have absolutely nothing to comment about this dish. I would not mind returning here just for these prawns. I would rate this at 9.8/10 . Highly recommended!

Bill
Overall, I am very happy with the food here, just one or two items which needs improvements. The staffs were very friendly, efficient and always attentive to customers needs. The prices too seem reasonable to me, if not cheap for this area when compared to the other Indian restaurants here. Definitely a place that deserves to stay on and I hope that the word of mouth travels around to give these guys some good support. Keep up the great work guys and just try to improve on one or two matters which I have highlighted. Otherwise, you're right on track!
