Makanan Daun Pisang Chettinad @ Kalumpang, Selangor

Makanan Daun Pisang Chettinad is a new eatery that had recently started in Taman Musabika, Kalumpang. Despite being a new place that had only opened it's doors for about two months now, they have already started having their regular customers who have been hooked on to the food. I too have visited them once before this and I fell in love with the food and hospitality.  At present, they only do lunch and they are open from 11 am till 4 pm and they do have plans to extend the business hours to dinner in the next few months.

The Stall In Taman Musabika, Kalumpang

Very Clean Environment

Food Is Prepared In Claypots

Teh O Ais
Currently, they operate from a temporary structure in Taman Musabika, Kalumpang which is just beside the Shell Station. Despite being a humble stall, the place is very comfortable, well ventilated and it is clean. The chef is from India and food is cooked in earthenware. They have both Banana Leaf  Meals as well as Thapalakatti Chicken Briyani. Choices of curries were good as well. I believe that they have outsourced the drinks to another vendor and for me, their Iced Tea was nice. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

Banana Leaf Rice Meal @ RM 5.00
Their Banana Leaf Meals were very impressive. Priced at RM 5.00 per set, it comes with three vegetables,  Appalam, Moor Milagai, Rasam and free flow of curries. You could top up your rice as well at no additional costs. And being a Friday, they also served us with complimentary Payasam.

Vegetables
I was very impressed with the vegetables. They were not the usual one's that you get at most South Indian restaurants and moreover, they were very generous with the spices. For me, all of them tasted great and I would rate them 9/10.

Sambar

Keerai Curry
Their curries were equally good and the amount of vegetables that had been added to the Sambar was quite impressive. They even add a generous amount of Moringa drumstick into their Sambar. The curries were thick and the flavours were just right. Even the Keerai Curry was good. I would rate them at 8/10.

Rasam

Payasam
Their Rasam nice and the blend of spices were perfect. Their Payasam was very thick and tasty. Once again, very generous with the ingredients and I just loved them both. My rating would be 8/10 for both.

Mutton Perattal @ RM 5.00
We also had a plate of Mutton Perattal. Firstly, I was surprised to hear that these chicken dishes were priced at RM 4.00 only and their Mutton at RM 5.00 . Most places in town charge much higher prices for these. Coming to their taste, it was totally mind blowing. Not only did the meat cuts taste good, the gravy that was provided in was heavenly. Based on my taste buds, I would rate their Mutton Perattal at 9/10.

Enjoying Our Lovely Meal
Despite being a humble set up, Makanan Daun Pisang Chettinad does offer some fantastic food at very reasonable prices. Being a returning customer, I was very happy with the consistency in quality. Quality ingredients were used and they were very generous with the spices. If you happen to be in Kalumpang, I would highly recommend visiting this place. Even from Tanjung Malim, it's not too far a drive and it is totally worth the drive since the food was quite impressive.

Kedai Cheong Fong @ Kalumpang, Selangor

For old school coffee and steamed Hainanese Bread and Buns, I would recommend visiting Cheong Fong that is located in Kalumpang town. This little town which was once a mining town had lost all it's glory, sadly to the migration of families to larger cities. In fact today, only three shops are still operating in the entire town.

Cheong Fong In Kalumpang Town

Old School Design

Colonial Architecture

Lovely Atmosphere
This restaurant opens for breakfast and they sell their signature Hainanese Curry Mee. After that, they start making Pau's and trust me they are already sold out even before they start making them. Customers who are passing through that day would call in to order and they literally order by the cartons. Even this afternoon, I wanted to have Pau but they ran out of it.

Hainanese Tea @ RM 1.30

Hainanese Coffee @ RM 1.30
Both their Hainanese Tea and Coffee are good. The coffee is ground the traditional way with margarine and it has such a classic taste. Similarly, their Tea is another excellent preparation. For both these drinks, I would give them 9/10.

Steamed Bread @ RM 3.00
If you have never tried the Hainanese Steamed Bread and Buns, then you have got to give this place a try. They are so good and the bread is served with their homemade Kaya and Butter. Again, those two as so tasty as well. My rating for this is 10/10.

One of those last few shops that is still in existence in Kalumpang town is Cheong Fong. They have been making Hainanese Pau's for over three generations and there is so much demand, so much so they are sold out even before they start making. That is the volume of telephone orders that comes in and customers buy by the cartons. Besides Pau, they do sell all the items that you would typically get in an old school Hainanese Coffee Shop. My favourite is their Steamed Bread that comes with their very own homemade Kaya and Butter. Coffee and Tea is equally good. If you're here for breakfast, you would get to enjoy their Curry Mee which again sells out fast. Best time to visit them would be before 11 am. But be prepared to wait in line for a table.

They have both Banana Leaf  Meals as well as Chicken Thapalakatti Briyani and we opted to try both. Choices of curries were good as well.

Chicken Briyani @ RM 8.00
The Briyani of the day was Chicken Briyani and it is cooked according to the Thalapalatti Briyani style. For RM 8.00 , I felt that the portion was good and it comes with vegetables, chicken, a hard boiled egg and Chicken Kurma. The flavours were rich and it was pretty good. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

Banana Leaf Meal
Their Banana Leaf Meals were very impressive. Priced at RM 5.00 per set, it comes with three vegetables, one Pudina & Coconut Chutney, Appalam, Moor Milagai, Rasam and free flow of curries. You could top up your rice as well at no additional costs.

I was very impressed with the vegetables. They were not the usual one's that you get at most South Indian restaurants and moreover, they were very generous with the spices. For me, all of them tasted great and I would rate them 9/10. The Pudina Chutney stood out among the vegetables and for that specifically, I would give it a 10/10.

Sambar

Vegetable Kulambu

Rasam
Their curries were equally good and the amount of vegetables that had been added to the Sambar was quite impressive. The curries were thick and the flavours were just right. Even the Rasam was good. I would rate them all at 8/10.

Mutton Perattal @ RM 5.00

Chicken @ RM 4.00

Spicy Ayam Masak Merah @ RM 4.00
We also had a plate of Spicy Ayam Masak Merah, Fried Chicken and Mutton Perattal. Firstly, I was surprised to hear that these chicken dishes were priced at RM 4.00 only and their Mutton at RM 5.00 . Restoran Hajjah Aisyah Nasi Beriyani Kambing @ Kalumpang, Selangor

Restoran Hajjah Aishyah Nasi Briyani Kambing is a place that has been around for many years. They are located in Kampung Keliang part of Kalumpang, Selangor. Despite being so close to Tanjung Malim, I had not visited them in the past as I just had not gotten the time to explore Kalumpang. This afternoon, since I had some spare time, I decided to drop by for lunch.

The Home Concept Restaurant Located In Kampung Keliang

Ample Of Parking Spaces

Very Clean Too

Huge Dining Space As Well
It's hard to miss this place since they are located along the main trunk road itself. If you're coming from Tanjung Malim, keep going straight after the Tanjung Malim toll plaza. Within 5 minutes, you'd come to Kampung Keliang and this restaurant would be on your right. There's a huge signage at the entrance too. It's actually a home with a restaurant in front and they have a huge compound, so parking is not a problem. The place was very clean and they always greet you with a smile.

The Menu

The Menu

Variety Of Meat Types Available

Briyani And Nasi Mandy Arab Are Available
One could either order at the counter itself where all the meat types are kept in pots or take a seat, browse through the menu and place your orders. Typically, they have Nasi Briyani and Nasi Mandy Arab here and the meat types that they have are chicken, mutton and venison.

Teh O Ais @ RM 1.80
I ordered the above Teh O Ais and it was priced at RM 1.80 . It came is a huge glass and was nicely fixed. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

Nasi Beriani Kambing @ RM 13.50
The Briyani variety that you get here is the Nasi Beriani Gam which is the Muar / Johorean version of this dish. I was glad to see that they use Basmathi rice too and they were quite generous with the acar. It isn't like the Indian style Briyani which uses a lot of spices and so if you're expecting that, this would not be for you. This is typically rice cooked with ghee and served with meat in a sweet gravy. For me, I would say that they rice was nicely done and so was the acar. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

Mutton In Sweet Gravy
The main taste to this dish comes from this meat plus gravy and I enjoyed the preparation here. The gravy was mildly sweet and it had retained the taste of the lamb. The mutton cuts came with a mix of lean meat and fat. The meat was tender and you could easily peel it off the bone. Taste wise, I would give this 8/10 as well.

If you happen to pass Kalumpang, then I would recommend giving this Mutton Briyani Gam a try. They are open daily from 10 am till 4 pm. Besides Mutton, they also serve chicken and venison as well. For those who fancy the Arabic Nasi Mandy, that too is available. Good food and prices are reasonable.

Restoran Chup Nam Foong @ Kalumpang, Selangor

Many people would label Kalumpang as a sleepy little town but not many know that inside Kampung Sejantung which used to be called Kalumpang New Village, there's a number of good Chinese eateries that's famous among the locals. This is one such place that I had visited this morning.

Prices Of  The Dishes

Local Coffee
Chup Nam Foong is a humble breakfast joint that's located in a row of wooden shops, very close to the entrance into Kampung Sejantung. The place is simple. Pretty much a family home with some tables outside and they only operate during breakfast. Their offerings include Curry Mee, Noodles Soup, Curry Chicken Wan Tan Mee, Hainanese Toast and Coffee. Prices are very minimal and service is personalised. The scene here is very different. It's like everyone knows everyone and addresses each other by their names. I was perhaps the only outsider today and luckily, I went with some locals and so could escape the stares. Ordering was simple. Prices of the dishes were pasted on the glass panel of the stall and everything that they offered were listed there. Having done with ordering the dishes, we returned to our tables and ordered our drinks. I went for the Local Coffee. It was reasonably priced as well and it packed a good oomph. Ratings wise, I would give it a 8/10.

Hainanese Toast
For their toast, they do not use the usual bread and stick with the tradition of using the long bread. For toasting, they also follow conventional methods of toasting it over charcoal. I was told that they make their own Kaya as well. Overall, I enjoyed the toast. The bread was nicely done and it came with a generous spread of butter and Kaya. Tasty and recommended for sure. I would rate this 8/10.

Curry Mee
Their Curry Mee was quite unique in the sense that it came with lots of coconut milk. Along with that, despite having added all the usual ingredients like tofu, fish balls, fish paste etc, they had also added Chicken Curry on the top. This seemed unique to me and the mix was heavenly. Probably those who are health conscious would not enjoy this as much but it was surely lip smacking good. I would rate this at 8/10 and definitely a recommended dish here.

Mee Hoon Soup
Their Mee Hoon Soup was nice as well. Instead of tasting just plain bland, I loved the flavours of the soup and again the mix of add on's were good. I was even surprised to find Wantan's in this dish which isn't a common addition for this dish. Overall, I'd give it 7/10.

Curry Chicken Wan Tan Mee

Wantan in Clear Soup
This bowl of Curry Chicken Wan Tan Mee was very good. The base dish came with generous amounts of soy sauce and above that, they had added some thick curry and these came with chicken chunks and potatoes. Mix them all up and you're waiting to be treated to a burst of flavours. Highly recommended dish here and I enjoyed it so much. I would rate this dish at 9/10.

Based on the dishes that I had tried this morning, I definitely enjoyed their Curry Chicken Mee and Curry Chicken Wan Tan Mee. These two were outstanding and highly recommended. The rest were good too but nowhere close to these highlighted ones.
