Restoran Big Big Wantan Mee & Rice @ Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya

Restoran Big Big Wantan Mee & Rice is the newest Wan Tan Mee restaurant to open in Damansara, Petaling Jaya. They are not an entirely new restaurant. They do have an existing outlet in Puchong but it is great that they have decided to open another outlet on this side of the city.

Restoran Big Big Wantan Mee & Rice in Damansara Utama
It is quite easy to locate this restaurant in Damansara Utama. For those who know where the famous Damansara Utama Hokkien Mee restaurant is, this restaurant is located right beside them. Parking can be a challenge on this side of Uptown and my recommendation would be to park on the other side that faces the LDP and walk through the back alley to this side. The restaurant itself was very nicely designed. Their primary dining area was air-conditioned and they have a few tables on the outside for smokers.

Their menu had a good range of dishes. Not only did they limit themselves to Wan Tan Mee, they also have a number of rice dishes as well and lot's of side dishes to choose from. Prices are reasonable but not to be compared with the hawker fare. Taking into consideration the high rental prices around this area, then I find the price of the dishes here to be reasonable. Customer service was good and the waiters were quick to attend to our needs.

Barley @ RM 2.00 & Herbal Tea @ RM 2.50

Pickled Chilli
Their drinks, both the Barley as well as the Herbal Tea were good. They weren't diluted and the price was right. I also enjoyed their Pickled Chilli's as they were not too thinly cut.My rating for the drinks shall be 8/10.

Dry Char Siew Wan Tan Mee (Small) @ RM 7.00

Char Siew
Their Wan Tan Mee was truly good. In fact, this was the best that I have had in recent days. Among all the Wan Tan Mee places that I have shared, this was the best. The noodles were so delicious on it's own and they were very generous with the sauces. My rating for their Wan Tan Mee would be 9/10. Their Char Siew was equally good as well. Not too fatty and it had a fair portion of lean meat. Taste wise, it was superb and I would definitely rate it at 9/10.

Wanton In Clear Soup

Minced Pork Sausage @ RM 7.00
The Wanton's that comes in the clear soup was nice but I have definitely taste better ones. The soup itself was nice and it had some balanced flavours. My rating for their Wanton's would be 7/10. The Minced Pork Sausage however was very nice and I would give this a 10/10.

The Bill
Restaurant Big Big Wantan Mee & Rice had recently opened this outlet in Damansara Utama. Of late, I have shared a number of Wan Tan Mee places and among the whole lot, these guys would be the best. Delicious noodles and reasonable prices. A place that I would recommend.

Aunty's Home Foods @ Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

I was looking for a good place to have some Hyderabad Briyani and was recommended to visit this restaurant called Aunty's Home Foods that is located along Jalan Berhala, Brickfields. It was such a small establishment so much so, it took us a while to locate that place but we finally reached there after walking around in circles.

Signage At The Restaurant

A Very Basic Restaurant

Looks Like A Restaurant In India
Well, the place is very basic and if you're one who is fussy about the environment and the surroundings, then this place is not for you. You would find that most of the people that visit this restaurant are foreigners from Hyderabad and for them, it's pretty much like home cooked flavours. Ordering is a breeze but do come early since their Briyani sells out fast. Best to be here before 1.30 pm.

Mutton Briyani
The specialty here is their Mutton Briyani. Very huge portions and I would say that it is good to feed two people. Prices are very reasonable since it is a set up that mainly caters for the foreigners The Briyani rice was so tasty and I did not even need the gravy that was provided. The mutton chunks were so soft and tender as well. If I were to rate this Briyani, I shall definitely give it 8/10.

Kurma

Onions

Raita
The sides that were served were very simple too. No fancy items. They were some Kurma, Raita and some cut onions. This is typically how a person from Hyderabad would love to have their meals. Even with white rice, the sliced onions are a must. The Kurma and Raita were good as well.

Must Have Masala Tea

Extremely Good Masala Tea

Served In Tiny Tumblers
Their Masala Tea is another must have here. Do note that they do not serve this and you would have to collect it yourself. The tumbler was another fascinating thing for me. It was slightly larger than my thumb. Taste wise, 10/10 would be my rating for this drink.

For good Hyderabad Briyani in Brickfields, I would recommend visiting Aunty's Home Foods that is located along Jalan Berhala. Do note that the place is very basic and if you're one who's very particular about the restaurant set up, then this place is not for you. Taste wise, it is definitely recommended. If you happened to visit them, do not miss their Masala Tea as it was really good. This restaurant has also been featured on Time Out Magazine.

Address: 66, Jalan Berhala, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur.

Business Hours: 0600 - 2300 Daily

Restoran Punjabi Junction @ Cyberjaya, Selangor

Restoran Punjabi Junction is a relatively new Punjabi restaurant that had opened it's doors sometime in April this year. They are located at the Centrus Mall, Cyberjaya which is located in CBD 3. Generally, they offer ala carte dishes but of late, they had started lunch buffet as well.

The Restaurant in Centrus Mall, Cyberjaya
I have visited them when they had just started sometime in April and found the food to be above average. However, I was told by many of my friends that their lunch buffet is pretty good. Having heard from a number of them, I decided to drop by this afternoon for lunch.

My Lunch @ RM 7.50
What they have is not really buffet concept but set meals instead. However, they have prepared a number of vegetarian as well as non vegetarian dishes for one to choose from and their sets are priced accordingly. Similarly, they also have a choice of Chapati or White Rice. I went for two Chapati's and two vegetables and this cost me RM 7.50 . Definitely not a cheap set lunch but if it's really good taste wise, then it should be fine.

Chapati
Their Chapati's are made to order and that's a plus point here. You get them hot and not those that have been made and kept in hot containers. Taste wise, their Chapati's were definitely good. The bread was soft and tasty. My rating for this shall be 9/10.

Potato With Beans

Dhall
Both vegetables that I tried were good, in fact, they were much better than the Ala-carte dishes that we tried when they had just opened. Certainly not made by the same chef as the last time too we had ordered the same Potato with Beans and it didn't taste this good. If I were to rate these, I would give them 8/10.

Restoran Punjabi Junction does have some good lunch sets to choose from and their Roti's are made to order thus ensuring you fresh and quality meals. Prices are steep though but taste wise, they are good. A good Punjabi restaurant to visit in Cyberjaya.

Liang Li Ikan Bakar @ Pandamaran, Selangor

A couple of days back, we were in Pandamaran and another place that we were told to visit by our friends would be Liang Li Ikan Bakar that is also located in Restoran Pandamaran One Six Eight. However, he was closed that evening and we missed that opportunity that day. Today, we were back here again for work and this evening, we decided to check that place out.

The Sign Visible From Afar

The Restaurant
This restaurant is always crowded and most often, you may not get parking close by. Be prepared to walk at least 500 meters. The entire street is quite dimly lit up too and so, once you're on this street, please drive slowly or else you may miss this stall. Alternatively, use Waze and choose Liang Li Ikan Bakar as your destination.

Liang Li Ikan Bakar Stall
It is just a humble stall in the food court but the demand is so great. He starts at 5 pm daily and if you want to try a number of seafood varieties, then my suggestion would be to be here before 6 pm. We were here at 7.30 pm and all he had was a handful of fish remaining. Stingray, Prawns and Squid were all sold out. Having come this far, we had to settle for what was available.

Grilled Ikan Senangin @ RM 38.00

RM 30.00 For This Fish
Prices were not cheap and he does mention that before hand so as to avoid any arguments later on. He had so many orders so much so, we had to wait almost 2 hours before the Grilled Fish was served. Was it worth the wait? Oh yes, it was. The fish was heavenly and the dip sauce was so spicy and went very well with the fish. My rating for this Ikan Bakar would be 8/10. Liang Li Ikan Bakar truly lives up to it's reputation and is worth a drive to Pandamaran. Best to be there before 6 pm as you get to enjoy more seafood variety then.

Char Kuey Teow & Pork Satay Jalan Mendaling @ Kajang, Selangor

Char Kuey Teow Jalan Mendaling is a stall that has been around for many years now. For those who do not know, this stall is located along Jalan Mendaling in Kajang town, just beside the Chinese Temple and Maybank.

The Stall Beside The Chinese Temple

Simple Road Side Seating Areas

Herbal Tea @ RM 1.20
This stall is only open on Monday's to Thursdays and that too from 7 pm till 10 pm only. I guess, the children must be having full-time jobs elsewhere and come here to continue the family tradition during the evenings. Previously, the mother used to prepare the Char Kuey Teow but now, the daughter handles this. The mother is quite aged and it is natural for her to have handed over to her daughter. The son basically does the Pork Satay. Yes, this would be the only place that I have come across in Kajang that sells Pork Satay. Coming back to this evening, the set up is quite basic as you can see and it's always advisable to come early. Come 8pm, the queue can be quite long and the wait time can exceed one hour. This is because she only prepares one plate at a time which is how most famous Char Kuey Teow places do.

Pork Satay @ RM 0.90 each

Thick Peanut Sauce
For the Pork Satay, only lean meat is used and it's really good. The marination isn't too sweet and that's perfectly towards my liking. My rating for this satay shall be 8/10. Their Peanut Dip Sauce was really thick and not sweet too. As a combination with the Satay, it was just perfect. This dip sauce surely deserves a rating of 9/10.

Char Kuey Teow @ RM 4.50

Kuey Teow Mee @ RM 4.50
Both the above that we had ordered were the small portions and they were priced at RM 4.50. Taste wise, the other's preparation is definitely way better. Nevertheless, this too was good but not as great as her mothers. I believe she has just recently taken over from her mother and we should give her some time to really pick up the skill. Over time, she should be there as well. I used to rate her mother's preparation at 9/10. This one, I would give it 7/10.

Kajang is a town that is famous for Satay but not many people know that you could also get Pork Satay in Kajang. This humble stall that is located along Jalan Mendaling sells this along with their famous Char Kuey Teow. Come early as they prepare limited quantity and the demand is high. Ideal time to be here would be around 7 pm.

Restoran Pandamaran One Six Eight @ Pandamaran, Selangor

We recently had to do a trip to Pandamaran for some work and by the time we were done, it was past 7 pm. I had been asking a few friends who are locals as to where would be a good place to have dinner and all of them recommended this particular restaurant that's located along Jalan Chan Ah Choo, Pandamaran. Since everyone that I had asked recommended this restaurant, we were somewhat convinced that this has to be a place that we should visit for dinner.

Look Out For The Sign Board

More Like A Food Court
Once you enter Jalan Chan Ah Choo, do slow down as the place is quite dark in the evenings. It is more like a Chinese Settlement area which has boomed over the years. The place was crowded and we had to park some 100 meters away. There were a number of stalls but we decided to keep to the recommendations and order precisely that.

Oyster Eggs Stall

Oyster Eggs (Small) @ RM 15.00
Though it's written as Ikan Bakar on the stall, this stall only does Oyster Eggs. As suggested, we decided to give this a try. Definitely quite pricey. The small portion was priced at RM 15.00 . Taste wise, it was nice. The eggs were nicely done and the oysters were not too overpowering. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

The Anchor Stall

Hokkien Mee (Small) @ RM 10.00

Yee Mee (Small) @ RM 10.00
This is the anchor stall at this restaurant at they have a variety of dishes that they offer. Right for the food that you would get in a typical seafood restaurant to simple dishes like noodles, it's all available here. Prices are steep. For one pax, they charge RM 10.00 which is something that I would consider quite expensive. Besides that, the waiting time is really long as well. It took them approximately 50 minutes to deliver those dishes that we had ordered. That was the volume of orders that they had to clear prior to my turn.

Their Hokkien Mee was very different to what I have had in the Klang Valley. It wasn't dark brown as it should have been. This was more light coloured and so were the flavours. The bold taste that we get from the sauces was not present. A mild tasting dish and perhaps requires an acquired taste to enjoy. My rating for this shall be 6/10. Their Yee Mee too was different. The broth was much lesser and it had lots of leafy greens. However, the taste was to our liking. Very different to what we get in Kuala Lumpur. Once again, mild flavours, but it was nice and my rating for this shall be 7/10.

In summary, I find the preparation here to be very different compared to what we get in the Klang Valley. Despite being a place that came highly recommended by the locals, to me, everything tastes much milder in flavour and price wise, definitely much more expensive. Please be prepared to wait a really long time before being served as well.

Ratha Banana Leaf Cuisine @ Kajang, Selangor

Ratha Banana Leaf Cuisine is a South Indian Restaurant the has recently opened up in Kajang. They have taken over the previous Ravi's Banana Leaf Restaurant. This would be my second visit here. Previously, I had visited them for lunch and was very happy with the food. That entry is something that I have shared about a month back. Having been in the vicinity, we were looking for a good place to have some tea time snacks and this place came to my mind and here we are again.

Ratha Banana Lead Cuisine in Taman Jelita, Kajang

Indoor & Outdoor Seating Areas Available
It was mid afternoon when we arrived and even then, there was a decent crowd at the restaurant. Since it was a little hot, we decided to sit indoor instead. I walked around to see what was available for tea and they had a good range of Palagaram's (South Indian Cakes) on offer and along with that, Spring Hoppers (Idiyappam) too.

Idiyappam & Masala Vadai
Idiyappam is something that is not easy to get in Kajang and almost impossible to get in Tanjung Malim. That being said, it's something that I have not had in a very long time. So, I decided to go for 4 pieces of that, some Sambar, Fish Curry and a Masala Vadai.

Idiyappam & Sambar
Their Idiyappam was of a reasonably huge size and the texture was really soft and nice. Not the coarse dry type that isn't to my liking. I would rate their Idiyappam's at 8/10. Their Sambar was excellent. If you remember from my previous blog post about this place, their curries were amazing and I'm truly glad that the quality is consistent. Even today, their Sambar was really thick and delicious and my rating for this shall be 9/10.

Idiyappam With Fish Curry

Masala Vadai
Their Fish Curry was equally good as well. It had all the right spices and the taste was what we had expected it to be. Taste wise, I would rate their Fish Curry at 8/10. Their Masala Vadai was good as well. Crispy on the outside, non greasy and loaded with spices. Do note that this is slightly on the spicy sideandmay not be suitable for those who can't palate spicy food. For me, being one who loves spicy food, it was a treat and my rating for this shall be 9/10.

Besides Basil Leaves Restaurant, Ratha Banana Leaf Cuisine would be another ideal South Indian Restaurant in Kajang to visit for a good tea time spread. Excellent variety, reasonable prices and truly good food. Convenient parking too.
