Restoran e Place @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

e Place is a sister restaurant of Easy Cafe, both of which are in Taman Ketoyong Permai, Tanjung Malim. Started by a Chinese gentleman, this restaurant serves Halal Chinese and Western dishes. Besides these, they also serve Steamboat and some Vegetarian dishes. This restaurant has been around for some time now and seems very famous with the university students. As I am on a crusade to try out as many restaurants in Tanjung Malim as possible, we decided to drop by here for dinner tonight.

Restaurant e Place in Tanjung Malim

The Steamboat Section
This restaurant occupies two shop lots. The one on the left is for general dining and the unit on the right is specially for Steamboat as the tables have been modified to hold the heaters. It was a cold night and we decided to sit outdoors which is still ventilated by ceiling fans.

The menu has a lot to offer in terms of the number and variety of dishes and the prices seem quite reasonable.

Steamboat Menu

Cutlery
Besides the Ala Carte items, they also offer  value for money Steamboat sets. We were not in the mood for Steamboat tonight and went for the dishes. Service here is quite efficient and the moment we were seated, we were attended to by the waitress.

Coca Cola @ RM 3.00

Ipoh White Coffee @ RM 3.00
A can of Coke is priced at RM 3.00 which is quite reasonable for a Cafe like this. We also ordered a cup of their Ipoh White Coffee which was priced at RM 3.00 . The White Coffee was decent, though not great. I would rate their White Coffee at 7/10 .

Nescafe @ RM 3.00
I ordered the above Nescafe. It was well fixed and was surely better than the earlier White Coffee. I would rate this at 8/10 .

Potato Samosa @ RM 6.00

Potato Samosa @ RM 6.00
For starters, we ordered the above Potato Samosa's. A plate comes with six pieces and is priced at RM 6.00 which works out to be RM 1.00 each. This also comes with some Chili Sauce on the side. This is definitely the frozen Potato Samosa that is sold in the supermarkets as the taste is very familiar. It wasn't all that great and I would only rate this at 6.5/10 .

Curry Mee @ RM 6.00

Closer Look At The Chili Paste

All Stirred
The Curry Mee came in a very large bowl and for the price of RM 6.00, I would say that it is definitely a good deal. Uniquely, the Curry Mee here comes in a bowl of Coconut Milk and the Chili paste is laid on one side of the dish and it is the customer that mixes the concoction to suit to their taste. Ingredients wise, it was filled with lots of Tofu, Cockles, Fish Paste, Fish Balls and Shrimps. Definitely a very fulfilling bowl of noodles. The Curry too, once all stirred up, tasted really good. This dish is definitely highly recommended and I would rate this at 9/10 .

Fish And Chips @ RM 13.00
My brother ordered the above Fish and Chips. To me, it seems like a very stingy portion. There was just half the usual portion of fish along with some fries, salad and some mayonnaise. For RM 13.00, this is just not acceptable.

The Fish

Mayonnaise
The Fish was the usual Fried Dory but the portion was ridiculously small. For a normal eater, I think you would need to order two of these. The fish, was just okay and had stains of oil which brought about a foul smell and taste and that is not how it should be served. I would only rate their fish at 5/10 .

Salad
Their Salad too was quite pathetic looking. There were just two salad leaves along with some shredded carrots and topped with Mayonnaise. Nothing much to shout about and it was not at all appetising. I would rate their Salad at 3/10 . Overall, not a good dish to order here.

Black Pepper Chicken Chop @ RM 13.00
This definitely is the joke of the century. I ordered Black Pepper Chicken Chop and not Fried Chicken served with Black Pepper Sauce. Chicken Chop means that the Chicken needs to be de-boned and chopped and then it is either grilled or pan fried and topped with sauce which clearly was not the case here. The moment I saw the dish, I was put off by it. Once again, it came with Fries, at least this had more fries compared to the earlier Fish and Chips and the same pathetic looking salad.

The So Called Chopped Chicken

Black Pepper Sauce

Scarce Meat with Thick Layer of Fat

All Fat
Even the Fried Chicken at KFC, which I find to be horrible nowadays, tastes better than this. There was very little meat, lots of bones and the chunk of it was fat which was nauseating. Simply not acceptable as I do not know how else to describe it. I would rate the chicken at 1/10 .

Fries
Luckily there was more fries on my dish and that was my savior. The Fries were good and that was the one that filled my stomach for the night. I would rate their Fries at 7.5/10 .In a nutshell, please do not order this dish unless you want to go through the same ordeal I experienced.

Both their Western dishes were very disappointing. The Chinese dish that we tried i.e. the Curry Mee, was good. Perhaps one should stick to just their Chinese dishes while dining here. I would definitely return for their Curry Mee but never for their Western dishes. Perhaps, the next time we should try their Steamboat.

Restoran Ga Onn @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

This is an entry about one of the famous Chinese Restaurants in Tanjung Malim, Perak that is usually patronised by the locals. Though there are other famous restaurants here, those are usually places that are visited by tourists and people from Kuala Lumpur who drive down for a quick and cheap meal, by KL standards. For us locals, we feel those restaurants are expensive and we are able to get equally good food here at local rates.

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50

Coca Cola @ RM 2.20

White Rice (Large) @ RM 1.20
The restaurant is simple in its layout and design. Being located in Taman Anggerik Desa which is right opposite the Hindu Temple in Tanjung Malim, has given them a great advantage in terms of parking space and accessibility. This is also the famous junction for vehicles coming from all directions that they would have to end up waiting at these traffic lights and this in turn gives clear visibility of the restaurant. Ordering is also fairly straightforward. There are no menu's whatsoever and you would just mention the dishes that you would like and they would prepare them accordingly. One thing that I like most about this restaurant is the honesty of the owners. When you order too many dishes, they would say that it is a little too much and usually even with a number of dishes, you do not have to mention big or small as he would always adjust the portions accordingly. That kind of sincerity is something that is still there in small towns like this.

Sin Kong Tofu @ RM 15.00

Sin Kong Tofu @ RM 15.00
The Sin Kong Tofu was done excellently. No complaints on this dish. They definitely must maintain this recipe as it would definitely score high among the customers. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 18.00

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 18.00
This is one of my brother's favourite dish and he just loves the preparation here. Sometimes, he even goes to the extent of ordering another helping of the same. The Mantis Prawns are fried to a perfect crispness and is coated with salted eggs. Definitely a very good dish. I would rate this dish at 9.3/10 .

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 10.00

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 10.00
This is one of our favourite dishes here. The Kangkung is cleaned very well and you do not get traces of sediments. In some restaurants, the greens are not properly cleaned and you do get some sand like thing in the dish and this is specially prominent to Kangkungs. Here however, it is thoroughly cleaned. The preparation too comes with a good amount of Belacan that gives a very aromatic taste to the dish. Definitely a good preparation and I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste @ RM 25.00

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste @ RM 25.00

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste @ RM 25.00
This steamed fish was a good choice. The last time here, we tried it steamed with ginger and this time decided to try with the Chili paste. The dish was well prepared and much better to the one we tried the last time. The fish was fresh and again it was cleaned well, thus eliminating any smell that is common in fresh water fish. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Lunch in progress
We dine at this restaurant at least once a week and the food has always been consistent. This is one of those places where you could say that the food is great, the price is cheap and the service is just excellent. What more would one want from a restaurant. Definitely a great place to drop by for a good meal.

Bistro Cafe @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Bistro Cafe is a newly opened restaurant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. This restaurant is located along Jalan Bernam Baru 1, Taman Bernam Baru and is owned by my childhood friends. Every time I go back to my hometown, my parents used to boast about the food here and how good it is. They used to say that the food here is akin to home cooked food and nowhere like a typical restaurant's cooking. Curious, I followed them for lunch today.

Entrance to the restaurant

Simple and clean
This restaurant is very simple in layout and it was extremely clean. Being familiar faces, we were greeted by the owners and I see them doing this with all if not most customers. This is definitely a good approach and they seem to have a very personal touch with all their customers and you do not get a sense that you are dining at a restaurant. The conversations, atmosphere is all non business like and makes you feel as if you are visiting them at their house. Such is the atmosphere here and now I truly see why my parents love this place. Not only them, all the customers here seem to be in the same boat and I too, felt the same.

Food Counter

Food Counter
Being a Friday, the emphasis was more on vegetarian dishes and they had minimal meat dishes. It seems that most people from the neighbouring residential areas come here and pack the curries back and hence if you would want to have a better selection, best to come by 1 pm. They have both Par Boil Rice and the usual rice here. Here you have the full liberty of taking the preferred items yourself and at a quantity that you prefer. The food definitely looked good and seemed to be made from quality ingredients.

Ice Tea
Their Iced Tea was quite good. There was a good amount of tea dust used to fix this drink and it was just nice. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

My Helping
I took some Brinjal Kuttu, Chicken Perattal and Chicken Curry to go with the white rice.  Though I wanted to try other curries, I was quite full by the time I finished the meal. The Chicken Curry was really good and I would rate it at 9/10 . I actually came back here on another occasion and that time tried their Mutton Curry. It was really good and just for information sharing, I would rate their Mutton Curry at 9.8/10 .

Brinjal Kuttu
The Brinjal Kuttu was very good. It was perfectly made with loads of black pepper and was very spicy yet delicious. I would rate this curry at 9.5/10 .

Chicken Perattal
Their Chicken Perattal was again good. Tasted just like those homemade dishes and nowhere close to a restaurant quality. I would rate the above at 8.7/10 .

My Dad's Lunch

My Mom's Lunch
Both my parents went for vegetarian meals. Their selection of available vegetable dishes was really good and would not limit and disappoint any vegetarian.

Papadam
Papadam is served separately. There is no charge for this and it comes complimentary.

Rasam
Their Rasam is good though slightly oily. Nevertheless, there are loads of spices in it and the Rasam is really hot and spicy. Those would sore throat should think twice before consuming this as you are surely to cough for a long period after having this. For me, I just loved it and would rate it at 9/10 .

The total meal for the day including drinks came to a mere RM 14.00 which is definitely very cheap. I for sure would agree that the food here is good and definitely homemade quality. Do come early to enjoy a greater selection as food tends to get sold out fast.
