Located in IOI Boulevard Puchong is an award winning restaurant called Restaurant Mao Jia that serves authentic Hunan Cuisine. The chef, Mr.Aun Chin Poh has won numerous awards in the global arena. Hunan cuisine has a close similarity to Szechuan Chusine and as I love spicy food, I wanted to try out this place for lunch today. I have only tried Hunan Cuisine once before this and that too in China and the taste is still fresh in my mind as I loved the taste very much. I am all eager to discover this place and definitely have high expectations.
Restaurant Mao Jia in IOI Boulevard, Puchong |
The Entrance |
Interior of the Restaurant |
The restaurant is quite easy to locate. It is facing the inside road and is clearly visible as you drive along IOI Boulevard. Parking can be a problem here but we were lucky to get a bay right in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is lavishly decorated and that gives it a very posh look. Right at the entrance there is a huge poster with photographs of the chef and the numerous awards that he has won over the years. The front space was full and we had to sit on the rear side. The photograph above showing the interior of the restaurant is from the rear section of the restaurant. Unfortunate that I could not showcase the interior of the front section as it was really beautiful.
Utensils Disinfected and Packed |
All the utensils here are disinfected and packed to maintain cleanliness by a third party. Once seated, the utensils is then unpacked for the customers. For this service, customers are charged RM 1.00 each. Honestly, this is the first time I am encountering this in a restaurant in Malaysia and I do not mind paying the small price for cleanliness.

Great Variety of Tea |
Osmanthus Tea @ RM 8.50 |
They had two large menus, one for their variety of tea and the other for the dishes. Deciding upon the dishes and the choice of tea was a great challenge as everything seemed very good. For the tea, I went with the waitress's recommendation of having the above Osmanthus Tea. Each of their tea is supposed to produce some health benefits and this one was supposed to be good for coughs and clearing the lungs. At a price of RM 8.50, this comes with a burner that keeps the tea hot throughout our meal and is refilled when it depletes. This tea was very mild in flavour and was somewhat similar to green tea. We liked this tea and I would rate this at 9/10 .
Appetiser |
The above appetiser was on the house. I do not really know what it was but it was nice. Must be some kind of seaweed and being prepared the Hunan style, it was extremely spicy. I would rate this at 8/10 .
White Rice @ RM 1.50 |
A bowl of white rice is charged at RM 1.50 each. Though the restaurant was full house, it did not take a very long time for the dishes to be prepared. The staffs were all very friendly and they were always on their feet attending to customers needs. In fact, they were disturbing me when I was taking photographs asking if I needed a model for the photographs too and this is good PR. The kitchen staffs too seemed to be very efficient and every few minutes, they seemed to be sending out a dish to the customers.
Deep Fried Spring Chicken With Chili @ RM 28.50 |
This was the very first dish to arrive. It is deep fried Spring Chicken with Chili. The dish was well prepared and it comes with small pieces of Spring Chicken and a lavish amount of Chili on it. Definitely a very spicy dish but amidst the spiciness, the taste of the chicken emanated well. The chicken pieces were also about the right size and it being spring chicken, the bones too were deep fried and they were crunchy. Definitely a good dish. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .
Sauteed Hand Shredded Cabbage @ RM 17.50 |
This was another dish that we really enjoyed and I must say, this was the least spicy dish that we had tonight and that does not mean that it was not spicy, just the gravity of spiciness was minimal in this dish. It comes with some thin pork slices and it sauteed in soy sauce and garlic. All the flavours were well preserved in this dish and the cabbage too was done just the right level. Definitely a great dish and a highly recommended one. I would rate this dish at 10/10 .
Sizzling Hot Plate Mutton @ RM 32.50 |
It is very seldom that we get mutton in a Chinese restaurant but here, they have a whole page in their menu dedicated to Mutton. We went for the above Sizzling Hot Plate Mutton. It came with thinly sliced mutton which was cooked with loads of chili and garlic. Another reasonably spiced dish here but definitely a good one. We enjoyed this dish as well and I would rate it at 8.3/10 .
Mao's Braised Pork Belly @ RM 28.50 |
If you are lover of Pork Belly, then this dish is a must try here. The pork belly was amazingly well done and I did get some traces of Rice Wine in the dish. The portion was also reasonably huge and worth the price. Definitely a very good dish and a highly recommended one. I would rate this dish at 9.8/10 .
Steamed Fish Fillet with Chili @ RM 36.00 |
This was the best dish that we had here today. It comes with slices of fish fillet that is steamed and served in a spicy hot broth. This dish is super spicy but it was heavenly. Even after we finished the fish slices, we ended up scooping the broth and drank it. I think I literally cleared the plate dry. I would rate this dish a perfect 10/10 . This is by far one of the best and most satisfying dish that I have had in a very long time. A Must try dish here.
From the dishes that we tried today, I would strongly recommend this place. The food is fantastic, service is great and it is reasonably priced. Although the chef has won numerous awards in his lifetime, this place does not charge an exorbitant rate for this premium. They have priced their dishes to be affordable by all and I must congratulate them for this. This would definitely be my favourite Hunan restaurant and I would definitely return soon and try their other great dishes.
