Sun Raj Curry House is located along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields and this is right at the center, very close to the Vivekananda Ashram but on the KL Sentral side and not on the old Peking Hotel side. It was just a matter of chance that I discovered this place. It was late afternoon and I was already starving. As such, I did not want to walk any further to my usual eatery and decided on giving this place a try. Another good landmark in locating this restaurant is Sithique Nasi Kandar which is right next door.
Entrance To The Restaurant |
Air Conditioned Restaurant |
Very Nice Paintings On The Walls |
The place was beautifully designed and it was air-conditioned. The restaurant was very clean and they had quite a number of paintings hanging on their walls depicting scenes from Chetty Nadu area in Tamil Nadu. There were also some posters on the walls promoting their Chinese dishes. It seems that this place is famous for their vegetarian Chinese Noodle dishes as quite a number of customers were seen ordering those. I was not in the mood for those and decided to stick with the usual rice and curry. Their food counters were located close to the entrance and just like most restaurant's these days, they had separated vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. As it was close to 3 pm, there was not much variety to choose from but whatever was left, seemed sufficiently good for me. As I was a vegetarian today, I was specifically interested to see their vegetarian offerings and they seemed to look quite good. I then had some Par Boil Rice and choose my curries and vegetables and with that walked over to a table to enjoy my lunch. Once at the table, one of the waiter's followed me through and brought over some Papadam, Rasam and Payasam. I then ordered my drinks and with that, he walked away. An interesting observation that I had was since this restaurant was quite secluded from the usual crowd, this seemed to be a favourite dating spot for the students from Brickfields Asia College. Well, what can I say, I too was in college once and that is just another phase of life. Anyway, time to get to my meal now.
Teh O Ice @ RM 1.50 |
The service here was very good. Waiter's were consistently on their feet and they were just on the lookout in case any customer needed their assistance. That's excellent customer service. My drink was sent over almost immediately and I was very impressed with the way that they were working. It was an amazingly cohesive and happy environment and every single one of them, seemed so happy working there. Not a single one had a sour face. A pleasant sight it was. Their Teh O Ice was priced at RM 1.50 which is the standard everywhere these days. Perfectly fixed, I would rate this at 9/10 .
My Lunch @ RM 7.00 |
My lunch consisted of some Par Boil Rice, Moor Kulambu, Vegetarian Mock Fish Sambal, Soy Meal Maker Perattal, Tofu Sambal, some vegetable and Snake Gourd Perattal. Not to forget the complimentary Rasam and Payasam. These in total were priced at RM 7.00 and that's a steal! I was taken by surprise when the bill was written. A very good deal indeed!
Moor Kulambu |
Moor Kulambu is a sour and spicy vegetarian gravy and this is my second most favourite vegetarian gravy after Venthaya Kulambu. The preparation here was very unique. Usually this is reddish in colour but this one was slightly on the orangy side. I am sure that they must have added a little extra curd into the preparation. The result was simply amazing! It was heavenly and a taste to remember. Awesome is the word and I would rate this at 10/10 .
Vegetable |
Sorry, I am quite bad with vegetable names and not too sure what this was but it tasted really good. Prepared with Dhall and Ghee, it was another fantastic preparation. I would not mind having this vegetable alone with some bread and it would surely taste good. Another excellent one and I would rate this at 10/10 again.
Snake Gourd Perattal |
Snake Gourd Perattal |
The Snake Gourd Perattal however was just so so. Not too great but still nice. I would say that it was average only. Perhaps, it lacked spices and was too much on the wet side of preparation. Not to my liking and I would rate this at 5/10 .
Vegetarian Mock Fish Sambal |
This, I would like to split into two for rating's purposes. The mock fish was just so so, the quality was not up to the mark and it felt a little rubbery and stiff. On the other hand, the Sambal was awesome. If they had used a better quality mock fish, then this would have been amazingly good. Do note that the Sambal was quite spicy and would not be suitable for those who are not used to this level of spiciness. The mock fish aside, I would rate the preparation at 9.5/10 . The mock fish itself only deserves a rating of 3/10 .
Soy Meal Maker Perattal |
The Soy Meal Maker Perattal was very good. Prepared similar to the Chicken Perattal style, this tasted delicious and it was prepared with lots of spices. The Soy Meal Maker was soft and juicy and the preparation itself was another great thing. Together, they were excellent! Another one that I very much enjoyed and I would rate this at 10/10 . Yes, they deserve a perfect scoring as not many places know how to prepare this the way it should be. The soaking technique and the cooking method all counts in order to make this the way it was. A delicious one!
Tofu Sambal |
Another fantastic preparation. The Tofu were cut just into the right cube sizes and they were prepared with some amazingly good Sambal. A true delight and I would rate this at 9.8/10 .
Rasam |
Their Rasam was another fantastic preparation. Seriously, I have never seen a single restaurant that had so many excellent dishes and these guy's just keep mesmerising me with their excellent food. The Rasam was thick and the concoction was filled with Dhall (Paruppu) and spices. Spicy and delicious! Once again, I would rate this at 10/10 .
Payasam |
This again, was very good! As you can see, it was thick, mildly sweet, had lots of raisins and cashews and it was simply delicious. An excellent way to finish off a hearty meal and I would rate this at 9.8/10 .
Never have I been mesmerised with food this good in a single restaurant. Every item that I tried (except for their Snake Gourd Perattal) was very good. One after another, it was a true delight and I am very lucky to have discovered this restaurant. What else can I say.....the food was amazing, the prices were ridiculously cheap, the service was parallel to a fine dining restaurant, the place was clean and air-conditioned....what else can I ask for in a restaurant. Great work guys and keep up the excellent work! I am definitely returning soon for more.
