Adaikalam Mess has been around for many years now in Rawang, Selangor and sadly, it is only recently that I came to know about this eatery. This eatery was originally established by the owner to feed the poor and needy where food is provided at minimal prices. In recent years, not only the poor but also those in search of good food come here and do not mind dining in the minimal conditions, all for the love of great food.

The word 'Adaikalam' means refuge and that is what this mess has been providing all these years for the poor and needy. Located centrally in the heart of Rawang town, this mess now not only feeds the needy but also the common man who works around Rawang town. If you are coming from Selayang, just keep going straight until you come to Jalan Welman which is the heart of Rawang town where you would find lots of Indian shops on both sides. Here, at the end of the second block, there would be a road turning in to Sun Cinema. Just keep going and you would find this nameless mess on your left. They start their business at 6 am and business goes on till around 8.30 pm at night daily. You would be surprised if I told you that you could eat a Banana Leaf vegetarian meal for just RM 3.00 and this is for limitless top ups. Chicken or Mutton meal is a mere RM 3.50 per person, regardless of the amount taken. That is how cheap the prices are at this establishment. Post lunch, they would start making Idiyappam's and this is indeed one of the places where you could get cheap and good Idiyappam's in the country.

We were here around 6.00 pm and even then the place was packed with customers, some dining there and many to take away. In the evenings, it is only Idiyappam that is sold here. Rice is available but that is the lunch leftover, if at all there is.

Orders are quick to be fulfilled. They are not calculative with the amount that they pack, sometimes they tend to give more, in fact that happens most often. Curries too are provided lavishly.

Interesting to see that a Chinese daily has done a write up on this restaurant and not a single Tamil daily and that is embarrassing. More support is definitely needed from the Tamil dailies.

The Idiyappam's are priced at RM 0.30 each but when I bought for RM 5, the man just packed 20 Idiyappam's for me. Not by mistake, but out of good heart. The Idiyappam's were truly good. They were not small like what you get in other places and most importantly, they were super fresh. I would rate these at 9.6/10 .

Their Sambar too was delicious. Don't expect to find all the extra ingredients here as it is a budget outlet but the taste was simply great. I would rate their Sambar at 8.8/10 .

Their Fish Kuzhambu was even better. This was not the type that you get in a typical restaurant but the type that is homemade without any of those ready made condiments added. All condiments and spices used at this restaurant are ground at the nearby mill and this gives an authentic taste to it. I would rate this Fish Kuzhambu at 9.3/10 .
This places has definitely some great food to offer. The prices at which the food items are sold are simply unbelievable. If you don't mind dining at basic conditions, then this place comes highly recommended!
