After a long time, here we are back in Ipoh, Perak. It's tea time and I was looking for a place to have some snacks. Well, the thing with Ipoh is that most of the good Chinese restaurants are open for either breakfast or dinner except for Wooley which does lunch but the food there is horrible these days. Having had a number of bad experiences recently, I have blacklisted that place for obvious reasons but this does not include Kam Wan which opens at night. Luckily it was already 3 pm and most of the food court concept stalls were already open for the evening shift. Instead of heading in to town, I decided to venture into Ipoh Garden East instead, one of those places that I have not been to in a very long time.
Kedai Makanan & Minuman Taman Timur in Ipoh Garden East |
One of the prominent food court concept restaurants in Ipoh Garden East is this restaurant called Kedai Makanan Dan Minuman Taman Timur. To get to this place is fairly simple. Assuming that you are coming from the North South Highway, once you turn left to get into Ipoh town, keep going straight till you sight Jusco on your left. At the traffic lights, turn left and keep going for about 1 KM. Once you reach the residential area, look right and this restaurant would be the corner unit. They occupy two shop lots and from around 2 pm onwards, majority of the stalls are open and by 4 pm, they would be fully functional. Parking can be a hassle here but it is okay to just park by the side of the road which is exactly what we did today.
BB Popiah Stall |
At 3 PM, there were roughly 10 stalls that were already open and the place was crowded. Yes, we had to wait a while before even getting a table. Since we were only here to have some snacks, we ended up sharing a table with another group of guys. This BB Popiah stall is right in the middle of the restaurant facing inwards. This Aunty only sells Popiah and she opens from 11 am till 10 pm daily.
Wet Popiah @ RM 2.20 each |
She must have had a long list of orders as it took her roughly 15 minutes to get our orders ready. Per roll is priced at RM 2.20 which is quite reasonable. The Popiah's were huge and they were really worth the price.
Crispy & Juicy |
Whenever I think of Popiah, I would always use the one at Kam Wan as the benchmark. That truly is some awesome Popiah. This one was definitely good and was way better than the one that we get at Wooleys. It was crunchy, juicy, lavish usage of sauces and perfectly wrapped. Yet, there was just something that was missing which I could not identify. Near perfect but not quite perfect, if you get what I am trying to convey. Anyway, still I would say that it was a good snack and worth the price paid. If I was to rate this, I would give it a 8/10.
Well, that was worth the drive. There seemed like a lot more to try here at this restaurant. Perhaps would come back again soon and give some of the other dishes a try.
