Being the oldest South Indian restaurant in Tanjung Malim, Shanmuga Vilas needs no introduction with the locals. Sadly, business has been on a decline solely because of how customers are being treated. Despite the food being so good, there were many incidents involving both locals and outsiders who leave the restaurant in a disgruntled manner. The reason being inconsistency with their charges as well as overcharging. Sometimes, a single person's meal can reach up to RM 20 as well, depending on their mood. Since many people have boycotted this restaurant, they try to squeeze the maximum out of their customers. I too have had several incidents with them but I mostly keep quiet. This is solely because I do plan on coming back since the food is good.
Banana Leaf Rice Meal @ RM 6.00 + Mutton Varuval @ RM 8.00 |
As always, I go for their Banana Leaf Rice Meal and this is priced at RM 6.00 . This set comes with two vegetables, Appalam, Rasam, Fried Banana Chips and free flow of curries. That too varies at times and they do charge more if they notice that you consume more curries.
Vegetables |
Their vegetables were decent. What I like here is their curries, chicken and mutton which is really good. Their vegetables are just so so and as expected, it turned out to be just that. My rating for this shall be 7/10.
Sambar |
Rasam |
Sambar is one that I would highly recommend here. It is thick and comes with lots of potatoes and other vegetables. Similarly, their Rasam is one potent cocktail. Comes packed with spices and other ingredients, it'll be one that you would definitely look for after a hearty meal. Both their Sambar and Rasam deserves a 10/10. Another excellent curry to have here would be their Venthaya Kulambu. The only problem is that they would only occasionally prepare that. If it's available for the day, my recommendation would be to go for that as well.
Mutton Varuval @ RM 8.00 |
Their Mutton Varuval is super good and so is their Chicken Varuval. As for the mutton, only lean meat is used and you'd hardly get bones. Moreover, they do not use the commonly available Australian Lamb and solely use Australian Mountain Goats which are a better breed and comes with very minimal fat. The preparation is a class of it's own as well and I am yet to come across a restaurant that does it this good. My rating for this shall again be 10/10.
Overall, this is a very old restaurant that does some amazing curries and their Chicken Varuval and Mutton Varuval are super good. The vegetables are quite basic and nothing to shout about. If you're planning to come here, I would recommend sticking to the above items only. Prices are on the steep side and can also vary day to day. If you're okay with that and willing to burn a hole in your pocket for some good food, then this place is for you.
