Restoran Ga Onn @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

There was a period of time when we used to come here literally every Saturday and Sunday for lunch. Since my India trip, the schedule has been altered quite a bit and after about three and a half months, here we are once again. For those that have been following my blogs, I am sure that you are used to seeing numerous entries on this restaurant. It is just that I tend to blog about every experience at restaurants, even those that I frequent often as it gives an ongoing insight on the restaurant and with that, I am also able to see if the quality has improved or declined and this also relates to the prices.

Restoran Ga Onn in Tanjung Malim

Inside The Restaurant
Just to give a brief introduction, this restaurant is one of those restaurants where you would see a lot of 'locals' . Though there are many other restaurants, some of those are high end, for Tanjung Malim people, and therefore most of those restaurants are patronised by visitors from Kuala Lumpur who drive up all the way just because the food there is a lot cheaper than KL. Besides that, they also have a lot of those specialty dishes which are not commonly found these days, perhaps you would have to pay through your nose for the same items in premium restaurants in KL. This restaurant however does not cater for that market segment as it is a normal Chinese Restaurant which I would not even classify as a seafood restaurant. This is a place where you get those common dishes at reasonable prices. This restaurant is  located along Jalan Cahaya which is directly opposite the Hindu Temple near the main traffic lights. As always, ordering is managed either by the lady boss or her brother. Since we come here often, we know what to order and always, they would adjust the portions based on the number of dishes ordered. This happens even when we do not remind him to do so. The owners here are very honest, never fail to remind you when you are over ordering and treat their customers well. That is one of the biggest reason why we keep going back to this restaurant though there are many more in town.

Sizzling Tofu @ RM 8.00

Sizzling Tofu @ RM 8.00
As always, we went for White Rice. Here, they have two sizes, big and small and based on your appetite and capacity, you could go for whichever size that suits you. The first dish to arrive today was the above Sizzling Tofu. You could go for the normal Tofu or the Japanese Tofu and we went for the latter. There is a layer of egg at the base of the platter and this is topped with some minced meat and the Tofu and sauces is laid above this. The preparation is definitely good and I just love the sauces that is used in this dish. Well balanced taste and goes excellently well with the White Rice. I would rate this dish at 8/10 . For the price of RM 8.00, the portion was just nice.

Greens Cooked With Garlic @ RM 8.00

Greens Cooked With Garlic @ RM 8.00
The vegetable was moderately fresh. Why I say this is simply that the amount of moisture in the vegetable had disappeared and also the cooking had been slightly overdone. This would have been much better if the greens were fresh. Another thing that was to my dislike was the presentation. It seems like they have just been dumped into the platter. I would have definitely preferred if the presentation was better. Taste wise, it was nice. A lot of garlic was used in this dish and that has given this dish a boost.  I would rate this at 7/10. The price is definitely good.

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 12.00

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 12.00
Taste wise, this dish was good. No complaints in that section. The salted eggs coating too was sufficient. On the other hand, the volume was ridiculously small. For RM 12.00 , I would have expected more. There were only six pieces on the plate and that's like RM 2.00 for a piece which is just not acceptable. This is something that they would need to improve on. Taste wise, I would rate this dish at 7.5/10 .

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Ginger @ RM 24.00

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Ginger @ RM 24.00
The above dish was a slight disappointment. We usually order other variety of preparation when it comes to fish but today, decided to give this style a try. The had ground the ginger to be too fine and though it was nice, it was just not up to the mark. The fish too was a moderate sized fish, would be less than 1 Kg and was priced at RM 24.00 . Price aside, there are other restaurants in Tanjung Malim that prepare this dish in a much better way. I would only rate this at 6.8/10 .

Definitely some improvement needs to be put in place here. I have been dining here since the day they had started this restaurant and that is somewhat for the past 15 years and of late, the prices have gone up slightly, portions have shrunk and the taste has dwindled. Not sure if it is another cook that they are using but this situation needs to change for them to remain competitive.
