Restoran Hing Hing Fa @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

As it was my Dad's birthday, we decided to head in to town for dinner. This time, we wanted to try out another new place called Restoran Hing Hing Fa. This restaurant is located on the Ulu Bernam side of town, just before the entrance to Jalan Kilang Papan C. If one is driving along the Jalan Besar in Ulu Bernam, you would definitely not miss this place as it is well lit up and happens to be just by the road side.

Just Arrived
I believe this place opened up some three months back. The reason why we had not visited this place thus far was simply because of the fact that this place only opens in the evenings. We hardly dine out for dinner as my parents usually prefer to go light at nights. Only lunch is heavy. Well, coming back to this place, it was a very clean and comfortable place. There were ample parking spaces right in front of the restaurant. There were quite a number of customers here this evening. In fact, whenever I pass by, I have always taken a peek and the place was always crowded. Service was quite efficient and once we were seated, one of the owner's (looks like a family owned restaurant) came up to our table and took our orders. There was a menu but it was all in Chinese, so that wasn't really helpful for us. Nevertheless, the lady was very helpful in explaining the dishes and recommending what's good here. With that, we sat back and waited for the dishes to arrive.

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50 per glass

Coca Cola @ RM 2.00

Cutlery

Cutlery
One of the things that I liked most about this place is that every table was well set with the necessary cutlery, serviettes, chilies / garlic and soy sauce. In most places, this would be shared around with a number of tables. I wanted to have Herbal Tea but they only had Barley. I skipped that and we ordered three glasses of Chinese Tea instead, two hot and one iced. My brother as always went for Coca Cola which was priced at RM 2.00 per can. The prices for the drinks were very reasonable. Some neighbouring restaurants charge RM 2.20 for the same Coca Cola.

White Rice (Big) @ RM 1.20 per plate
I was the only one to have a big portion of White Rice and this was priced at RM 1.20 . The rest went for the smaller portion, guess everyone's on a diet these days and that was priced at RM 0.80 per plate. The prices for these too were very reasonable. It took them a while to prepare the dishes and we got our meals after waiting for approximately 20 minutes. It was not a very long wait but definitely long.

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 8.00

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 8.00
Kangkung Belacan was the very first dish to arrive. Their Kangkung Belacan was just okay. It didn't have sufficient Belacan and had an overdose of Chili Giling. That made it to be slightly on the spicy side and this wasn't followed up by the Belacan's flavour as it was insufficient. The Kangkung however was quite fresh. The dish also appeared to be a tad too oily which wasn't up to my liking. I would rate this at 6/10 .

Sizzling Tofu @ RM 10.00

Sizzling Tofu @ RM 10.00
Their Sizzling Tofu again was not that great. We had asked for them to use the Japanese Tofu, instead what we got was the common type of Tofu which didn't go well with the dish. There was insufficient amount of eggs too. Commonly, there would be a layer of egg at the base of this dish but here, the egg's were scanty. Just some traces of egg whites were sighted floating in the broth, and that too an occasional sighting it was. Minced meat too was missing from this dish. The sauce will filled with Soy Sauce only and all the other flavours seemed to be lacking. I would rate this at 4/10 only.

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Chili Paste (Cheong Cheng) @ RM 27.00

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Chili Paste (Cheong Cheng) @ RM 27.00
Tilapia Fish is priced here at RM 3.50 per 100 grams which is the common rate everywhere in town. We went for the Cheong Cheng style. The broth was quite good and it was cooked with lard. The fish however was not thoroughly cleaned and therefore had some stench as you chew it. Tilapia as we all know is quite a dirty fish and it takes some thorough cleaning before cooking it. The gravy too did not seep in well into the meat making it taste rather bland as you get deeper into the fish. For me, this was a very average preparation and I would rate this at 6/10 .

Seaweed Soup @ RM 6.00

Seaweed Soup @ RM 6.00

Was Good For Four Bowls
The Seaweed Soup was excellent! It had a strong ginger base and tasted really good, very much like homemade preparation. We asked for a small portion and it was good for four bowls which was just nice for us. Priced at RM 6.00, it think that it was ridiculously cheap. I would rate this soup at 9/10 . Excellent stuff!

Dinner Done

Time To Cut The Cake

All Full From The Dinner

My Dad's Birthday Cake
Once our dinner was done, the staffs cooperated to clear the table for us to allow us to have a mini celebration there. It was nothing but just the cutting of a cake and singing a birthday song for my Dad. One that added meaning to our dinner today.

The Bill
Overall, it was a decent dinner. The prices here are very cheap but the food was just above average with an exception for the Seaweed Soup which was awesome. Portions were good though.  Otherwise just an average place.
