Having started as a small stall in SS2 in the year 1974, today Original Kayu Nasi Kandar has become an established and premium brand in the Nasi Kandar business with six outlets across the Klang Valley, one in Penang and one in Brunei.

Restoran Original Kayu Nasi Kandar in Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara |
Busy all day long |
Interior of the restaurant |
Being open 24 hours daily, they have a very good crowd right from breakfast to dinner and surprisingly, there is also a decent crowd in the wee hours especially during weekends. We were here for breakfast and the crowd that you see from the above photographs is the usual breakfast crowd on a weekday and it is usually much greater during weekends. This particular outlet in Kota Damansara is located in Dataran Sunway right opposite The Strand. There are dining halls on both the Ground and First Floors and they even have a lift for customers convenience.

Staffs Busy With The Orders |
They Even Have Their Own TV Channel |
All the staffs here are from Tamil Nadu, India and they are extremely efficient. The moment we were seated, the waiter immediately comes up to the table and takes the orders and all of them seem so busy yet are quick to attend to any customers needs.

Can Drinks @ RM 2.20 each |
Teh Tarik @ RM 1.80 |
The Teh Tarik here is definitely very good. It is prepared just the way it should be with the right level of sweetness and sufficient amount of tea dust. I would rate their Tea at 9.3/10 .
Potato Samosa @ RM 1.50 |
Their Potato Samosa was not too big but it was priced at RM 1.50 each which is slightly on the high side. Well, as this is a premium brand, all their food items are priced similarly. Taste wise, it was just okay and nothing great. I would rate their Samosa at 5.5/10 .
Idiyappam (Putu Mayam) Set @ RM 2.40 |
Idiyappam and Sambar |
I initially wanted to have just one Idiyappam (Spring Hoppers) but was told that it is only sold in sets of two. Their Idiyappam was quite huge and two of those would be good enough to start the day. It is served with Sambar. I liked the Idiyappam as it was very soft and fluffy. The Sambar was also nicely prepared. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .
Roti Canai @ RM 1.40 each |
Soft and Nice Roti Canai |
Served with Sambar |
Their Roti Canai has a great demand and I surely believe that these guys must sell a few thousand daily. Their Roti Canai was extremely well prepared and it was good. Despite being full, we ended up ordering another one just because it was really good. I would rate their Roti Canai at 9.3/10 .
Mee Goreng @ RM 5.00 |
Mee Goreng @ RM 5.00 |
The Mee Goreng was not up to my expectations. I did not like the idea that it had ground peanuts in it and the Mee too was sweet. Tasted like it was fried using the Satay Peanut sauce which was quite odd. I would only rate this dish at 6/10 .

Their Outlets |
Overall, besides the Mee Goreng and Samosa, it was a good meal. We were happy with their Roti Canai and their Idiyappam's as they were up to the expectations. Of course, the main food here is their Nasi Kandar and I would definitely come back another day to try that too.
