Woolley Food City @ Ipoh, Perak

On the way back from Kedah, we had stopped in Ipoh for dinner. Whenever we come to Ipoh, it is almost customary for us to visit Woolley Food City for a good and cheap meal.

Woolley Food City in Canning Gardens, Ipoh
This place is not new to us. As far as I can remember, I personally have been visiting this place since the late1970's. Since the time I can remember, this place has always been serving great food at decently cheap prices. There is also another row of stalls on the right side of this building too. The main building seen above is good for lunch and for dinner, it would be much better to visit the stalls on the right. You get a great variety of food here from Chinese Food, Indian Food and also some Western Food too.

Stalls after stalls to choose from

Us about to have dinner

Dinner in progress
Most nights, it is difficult to get a place here and you would have to wait a while to get a table.Once the table had been secured, you would need to make a mental note of the table number and then walk up to the stalls, place your orders, mention the table number and then return to your place. Once the dish is sent to the table, you then make the payment. I always end up over ordering as everything seems so good here. Since it was just the two of us tonight, I had to be very cautious on the number of dishes I am ordering.

Popiah @ RM 1.80
The first dish that arrived was the above Popiah. My dad is a great lover of Popiah and whenever he comes here, this is a must have dish for him. And yes, those two large pieces are sold at only RM 1.80 . You could also go for just one piece which is then charged at RM 0.90 . These Popiah's are really delicious and comes with solid fillings of eggs and vegetables. The layer of chili paste is also really thick and worth every dollar spent. Absolutely delicious Popiahs. A sure treat to Popiah lovers. I would rate these at 9.5/10 .

Oyster Eggs @ RM 5.00
This was obviously from another stall that sells purely Oyster related dishes. I must say that this dish was well done and it was delicious. In some places, you do get the taste of oil but here it was really dry. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Grilled Stingray @ RM 8.00
This is from the very last stall at the furthest end, close to Woolley. Every time I come here, this is a must have dish for me. The grilled fish is spiced almost like Indian style of cooking and it is extremely cheap here. The above dish only cost us RM 8.00 and it is extremely spicy, well marinated and delicious. Their grilled items are not only limited to stingrays but also goes as far as fish, prawns and squid. I simply love this dish and would rate it a perfect 10/10 .

Steamed Dumplings @ RM 3.80
There is an assortment of three different variety of Steamed Dumplings in the above dish and this whole lot cost us a mere RM 3.80 . If you love dumplings, then this is a must try as this variety is not easily found in Kuala Lumpur. I would rate the above dish at 9/10 .

On the whole, this is a great place to have your lunch or dinner when you are in Ipoh. Under a single roof, Woolley Food City is able to offer great Chinese Food and at a very cheap price. There is also a variety of other food available which includes Indian Food, Western Food and also Vegetarian Food.
