Restoran Ga Onn @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Once again, here we are at our favourite Chinese restaurant in Tanjung Malim for our weekly family lunch. It seems that I have blogged almost six times about this place in the past, the last one just a couple of days back. Though there may be similar dishes that we have ordered in the past, there are also some new dishes that we try out each time and hence I felt that it should introduced as an ongoing effort in my blogs.

Waiting for our meals

Waiting for our meals
They are usually busiest for dinner and for lunch, 12 to 2 is the peak period. When we arrived, it was close to 2 pm and most have had their lunch and left. There isn't really a printed menu here to use as a reference when ordering. Since we are so used to this place, we are quite familiar with most of their dishes and whenever a new dish is introduced, the boss would always make his recommendations and since we know each other so well, we would always try them out.

Kankung Belacan @ RM 8.00

Kankung Belacan @ RM 8.00
This is one of our favourite dishes here. The Kangkung is cleaned very well and you do not get traces of sediments. In some restaurants, the greens are not properly cleaned and you do get some sand like thing in the dish and this is specially prominent to Kangkungs. Here however, it is thoroughly cleaned. The preparation too comes with a good amount of Belacan that gives a very aromatic taste to the dish. Definitely a good preparation, but somehow, it wasn't it's best and for today's preparation, I would rate this dish at 7.9/10 .

Steamed Tofu with Dried Shrimps @ RM 8.00

Steamed Tofu with Dried Shrimps @ RM 8.00
This was the new dish that we tried out last week and since we liked it, we ordered the same again this afternoon. The preparation was really simple. Tofu was steamed with soy sauce and topped with dried shrimps but the taste was really good. The flat taste of the Tofu and the salty taste of the shrimps went really together really well. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Butter Prawns @ RM 20.00

Butter Prawns @ RM 20.00
Somehow, the Butter Prawns was not as good as it usually is. There was a lack of 'Oomph' from the dish, maybe the prawns were not too fresh. I felt disappointed with the taste and as such, shall only rate this dish at 7/10 .

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste (Cheong Cheng) @ RM 22.00

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste (Cheong Cheng) @ RM 22.00

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste (Cheong Cheng) @ RM 22.00
This steamed fish was a good choice. The last time here, we tried it steamed with ginger and this time decided to try with the Chili paste. The dish was well prepared and much better to the one we tried the last time. The fish was fresh and again it was cleaned well, thus eliminating any smell that is common in fresh water fish. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

We dine at this restaurant at least once a week and the food has always been consistent, except for some dishes today. This is one of those places where you could generally say that the food is great, the price is decent and the service is just excellent. What more would one want from a restaurant. Definitely a great place to drop by for a good meal.

Restoran Yik Mun @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Restoran Yik Mun Tanjung Malim is one of those restaurants where I have been dining for more than 30 years, since it belongs to my classmate. I have blogged about this restaurant before and that was on it's Pau's but there is another item here that is worth trying which not many know of, and that is their Hainanese Chicken Chop.

For those who do not know how to get to this restaurant, once you exit the Tanjung Malim toll plaza, keep going straight until you reach the traffic lights. Here, you would need to turn left. Keep going till you see a large Hindu Temple on your left and at this point, if you look right, you would be able to see this restaurant. Those days all the staffs were Chinese, locals from the town but today all the staffs are Indonesians, except for the cook who is a Pakistani boy from Tanjung Malim. This boy was my junior at school too. Seeing me today after a number of years, he personally came up to our table to take the orders. So nice of him to still remember me.

Filling in our orders

Table Number with Buzzer
The menu was very good, all their items had a photo of the dish to giver better illustration. They provided us with a chit which is used to fill the orders and then this is to be passed to the waiters.

Coca Cola @ RM 3.50
The Coca Cola surely comes at a premium price. We wanted the can but they only had this bottled one.

Hainanese White Coffee @ RM 3.50

Hainanese White Coffee @ RM 3.50
The Hainanese coffee was served in a restaurant branded mug which is a recent improvisation here. Previously they used to serve it in the old school Hainanese coffee shop cups. The coffee was definitely good and was up to the mark. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM 16.00
The Hainanese Chicken Chop was prepared in the authentic style except that instead of fries, they had provided some mashed potato's and also replaced the toast bread with a small piece of Man Tau Bun.

Fried Chicken Topped with Peas and Onion Gravy

Fried Chicken Topped with Peas and Onion Gravy
The Chicken was wonderfully prepared. A decent portion and was topped with a delicious batter of peas and onion gravy. The preparation was excellent and I loved it very much. It is very rare to see the authentic Hainanese Chicken Chop served up to this level of taste. Definitely  highly recommended dish here and I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Man Tau Bun
A small slice of the Man Tau Bun was provided in replacement of the tradition toast and butter. The Man Tau Bun was soft, sweet and creamy. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Mashed Potato
The Mashed Potato  was served in a small aluminium foil like plate. The preparation was definitely perfect and I would rate it at 9/10 .

Overall, this was surely a very satisfying dish. I definitely would not compare them to their neighbours E&L as that is another unique family owned recipe, both excellent in their own class. As for this dish, definitely would be coming back for more.

Restoran Anuja @ Desa Aman Puri. Kuala Lumpur

Whenever one mentions Restaurant Anuja, most of us would remember the restaurant in front of Pudu Raya Bus Terminal but not many know that they have three other restaurants around Kepong area. Most of their restaurants has the Indian Muslim concept and food except for this particular outlet that is located in Desa Aman Puri which serves Tamil food.

The Curries Station

Interior of the Restaurant
This restaurant is located not too far from my place and you would have seen me blog about this place a number of times before but I constantly do it as the taste may change over time and it is the true responsibility of a food blogger to post on the latest taste change if he has visited the restaurant recently. Here, ordering can be done either at your table or you could head over to the curry station and choose the dishes. Meals could also be had on a plate or Banana Leaf, of course the price varies for both options. My last trip here last month was a disaster as all the curries were diluted due to the crowd and the food tasted really horrible. However, my previous trips were quite satisfactory. I would like to assume that that was a glitch on a single business day and would like to give them a try again today. Hopefully, I would return a happy man.

Teh O Ais @ RM 1.30
As always, their Teh O Ais was nicely fixed. There was a decent amount of tea in the drink and not too much ice. But the price has gone up by 20 cents since my last visit. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Spring Hoppers (Idiyappam) @ RM 0.80 each
I went for their Spring Hoppers as I was not in the mood for rice. This is definitely those left over items that was prepared for breakfast but I was okay with it. They reheated it using the microwave before serving. The Spring Hoppers weren't too big and so I had to go for three pieces. Taste wise, I would rate this at 7.5/10 .

Mutton Gravy
Thank God that their Mutton Gravy was back to the norms. It was thick and aromatic with just the right amount of spices. The last time I was here, this was diluted and almost tasteless. I was definitely delighted with the comeback to taste. I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Goat Intestine @ RM 5.50
Oops, this too has gone up by 50 cents since my last visit last month but the taste was consistent as always. This dish has never let me down every time I come here. In my opinion, the goat intestine curry served here is one of the top three available in Kuala Lumpur. I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Mutton Curry @ RM 6.00
Hmm...this dish too had gone up by RM 1.00 since last month. The mutton was much better this time. Good meat chunks were nicely cooked with aromatic spices. The gravy too was thick and delicious. Overall, a sure treat to mutton lovers. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

The Bill
I am definitely glad that the food is back to what it used to taste before. The slight price raise was definitely not a put off as the taste was good and it matched the price. Hope the taste shall always remain good as today.

Waiting For The Dishes to Arrive
There isn't really a printed menu here to use as a reference when ordering. Since we are so used to this place, we are quite familiar with most of their dishes and whenever a new dish is introduced, the boss would always make his recommendations and since we know each other so well, we would always try them out.

White Rice (Big) @ RM 1.50
Here, white rice is priced at RM 1.50 for the large plate and RM 1.00 for the small plate. As I was just looking through my old blogs earlier, I just realised that the price of white rice has gone up from last year. In early 2013, white rice (Big) was priced at RM 1.20 .

Mantis Prawns with Dried Chili @ RM 15.00

Mantis Prawns with Dried Chili @ RM 15.00
Usually we would go for the Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs but today, we wanted to try a different preparation and decided to go for this. Slightly spicy and sweet, this was a good preparation but the one with salted eggs is better at this restaurant. Nevertheless, this was still a good dish. The only setback was that the mantis prawns were a little soaked and soft as it had been topped with the spicy sauce.I would rate this at 8.2/10 .

Sweet & Sour Fish @ RM 24.00

Sweet & Sour Fish @ RM 24.00

Sweet & Sour Fish @ RM 24.00
This was really a fantastic preparation. The fish was coated with a super crispy batter and the sauce was wonderfully prepared. Definitely a heavenly preparation. Absolutely nothing to comment on this dish. I would rate this at 9.9/10 .
