Ah Dee's Sarawak Kolo Mee @ Kota Damansara, Selangor

At the moment, I am working on a project with a client based in Kota Damansara and as such, you'd be seeing quite a number of entries in the coming weeks from this locality. And this very same client is the one who had recommended me to try Ah Dee's Sarawak Kolo Mee. Apparently, it is quite good and tastes quite similar to the one's that you get in Sarawak. Based on his recommendation, here I am this afternoon for lunch.

Ah Dee's Sarawak Kolo Mee Stall

Restoran Big Family in Kota Damansara
This outlet is located in Restoran Big Family which is in Taman Industri Sungai Buloh. A place that is very close to the old Sungai Buloh Road which is also known as Selangor Green Lane. Parking is a huge problem here. So if you're here for lunch, do be prepared to walk quite a distance.

It seems like every single stall in this restaurant is doing very well and the place is buzzing with customers. Ah Dee's stall was no exception. Even to place the orders, I had to wait for a couple of minutes just for my turn to register my orders. He only has one noodle variety which is the Sarawak Kolo Mee. The variety is basically the type of add on ingredients that one would like to have and that decides the price of the dish. Nothing complicated as he has pictures with description pasted on the stall and that makes the ordering process much simpler.

Sarawak Kolo Mee with Minced Pork & Char Siew @ RM 6.00
Having placed my orders, I did have to wait close to twelve minutes for my food to arrive. For a simple stall concept, that is quite a wait but I do not blame him. The crowd was such. When the dish arrived, I immediately realised that my client has definitely not tasted Kolo Mee in Sarawak as this seemed like it but not quite like it.

Noodles Was Good
The portion was decent but not sufficient to satisfy someone with a big appetite like me. The noodles were tasty. It was moist and nice but at the same time I felt that it was too moist as an overall dish and that may have brought down the taste. His Char Siew again wasn't great. It was just another Char Siew.

Minced Pork
Minced Pork is the main ingredient for this dish and I felt that it was too moist. It should be a little dry and mildly crunchy. As an overall dish, I would give this a 6/10. Nah, I would not be recommending this to anyone unless you're really in the mood for this dish and happened to be in the vicinity. I have tasted much better ones in Damansara Perdana which is a mere 15 minutes drive from here.

Clear Soup
This dish was also served with a small bowl of clear soup. Again, nothing much to shout about. Just another clear soup it was and I'd probably give it a 6/10 as well.

I will definitely come back to this restaurant as there is so much food to be explored but I doubt if I would come back for this Sarawak Kolo Mee. It surely wasn't one that I had enjoyed.

Sarawak Kuching Kolo Mee @ Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya

Located right in the middle of Perdana Business Centre in Damansara Perdana is a common Chinese restaurant called Restaurant Ah Sai which works like a typical Chinese restaurant whereby there are a number of stalls occupying the premise and the main tenant usually supplies the drinks. Today my entries special highlight is on a stall located inside this restaurant called Sarawak Kuching Kolo Mee which serves excellent Kolo Mee.

Restaurant Ah Sai in Damansara Perdana

Sarawan Kuching Kolo Mee Stall
This stall is quite clearly noticeable as you walk over to this restaurant. It is right beside the Pan Mee stall and do note that they tend to get sold out rather quickly so getting here early is important.

The Owner Preparing the Orders

It is mostly quite busy at this restaurant

Interior of the Restaurant
As this restaurant shares it's space with a number of other stalls, the place can get to be quite busy and during peak hours, do expect to share a table with a stranger. The cleanliness is mediocre but the service is quite good. It is a good place for a quick, cheap and good meal. Although this restaurant operates from 10 to 10, this particular stall only opens from 11am - 2.30 pm and then opens again from 6 pm - 9.30 pm. When placing your orders, it can be quite a challenge to get the owners attention as he is usually swarmed with orders but then, with some patience, you would be able to get a fantastic dish of Sawawak Kolo Mee sent to your table.

Closer Look At The Dish
Within minutes, you would have a wonderful dish of Kolo Mee served at your table. This dish reminds me of the bowl of Kolo Mee that I had in Kuching almost a decade ago. Everything here is homemade. The owner makes all the items himself including the Char Siew and hence the unique colour of the Char Siew. There is a wonderful amount of ingredients added to this dish and it is fixed so perfectly that you might yearn for another bowl. At the price of RM 5.00 for a small bowl, it is something that you would truly love. The lavish amount of minced Pork meat and the rest of the ingredients blended so well with the dish. Definitely a great dish. I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Clear Soup provided with the Dish
Although this looks like a simple clear soup, it was really very good. Not flavoured by MSG, it had true flavours to it which were from Chicken bones and spices. I would rate this at 9.1/10 .

This is not a place that you should travel great distance to try their food but if you happen to be nearby, this is a stall that you must visit especially if you love Sarawakian cuisine. Definitely a must visit place for Sarawakians living in Peninsular Malaysia.

Farm House Kitchen...Taste Of Sarawak @ Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya

Located in Bandar Damansara Perdana is this restaurant called Farm House Kitchen which sells authentic Sarawakian dishes. Having passed this restaurant a number of times in the past, I had never attempted to visit them before until tonight.

Restaurant Farm House Kitchen in Bandar Damansara Perdana
They are located along Jalan PJU 8/5G, right opposite the entrance to The Place. I believe that there is a hotel too along this same row of shops. Parking can be difficult here both day and night so please come prepared to go in circles in search of a parking bay.

The restaurant is very brightly lit up and is extremely clean. When we walked in, I was surprised to find that this restaurant had already been showcased by both TV8 and Nanyang Siang Pau. That being said, the food must surely be good here. Nevertheless, I could not find any endorsement by the Jalan Jalan Cari Makan Team. They must have somehow missed this place. The staffs are all Sarawakians, even the cooks. The cooking area is just separated by a glass panel and one is able to see through to all the activity happening there.

The Menu

The Menu
As we took our seats, we were promptly attended to by the waitress. She handed us the menu and waited for the orders. The menu itself was simple, just a double sided laminated card which sums up all their dishes and drinks offered. The menu is predominantly Sarawakian dishes and a few Malaysian dishes. Even those Malaysian dishes are customised to Sarawakian taste buds with a slightly altered preparation. This was told to me by the waitress.

Sarawakian Coffee with Milk @ RM 2.20
I ordered the above Sarawakian Coffee and Angie just got herself a glass of water. The coffee was pretty nice, definitely much different to the Hainanese Coffee, slightly salty and rich with margarine taste. On the whole, a pretty unique taste. I would rate this coffee at 8.8/10 .

Sarawak Laksa @ RM 6.80

The accompanying Chili Paste
The Sarawak Laksa served here was nice and I liked it very much. The gravy was thick and you can choose the preferred noodle type. It was slightly salty, not spicy but delicious the way it was. There was no need to use the Chili Paste given as I enjoyed this dish even without it. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Sarawak Curry Noodle @ RM 6.80

The Accompanying Chili Paste
The Curry Noodles however was a little too salty. Everything else was fine but this overload of salt truly killed the taste. I would only rate this at 4/10 . I wonder as to why there is an additional pinch of salt in all the dishes. Is it common in Sarawak? Something that I should learn more about.

Vegetable With Oyster Sauce @ RM 3.50
This dish was again another well prepared dish. Again, just like the previous dishes, this dish too had an overdose of salt but it was still bearable and tasted decent. At RM 3.50, I think it is quite cheap. I would rate this dish at 7/10 .

The total bill for the meal came to RM 19.80 which is cheap for two including drinks. There were no Service Charges or Service Taxes included. I find this place to be nice, clean and serving decent food at pretty cheap prices. This is definitely a recommended place for those who love Sarawakian dishes.
