Tong Nam Bee @ Raub, Pahang

This morning, we head out in search of another good place to have breakfast in Raub town. Many of the places were closed due to the holidays and fortunately, one of those famous Coffee Shops were open. There was no need for me to check on Foursquare how good this place is. The queue outside the restaurant told it all.

Customers Waiting For Tables

Outdoor Seating
This seems to be a place that has been around for a very long time and is a famous breakfast place among the locals. We were here at around 11 am and even then, the queue was so long. We had to wait in line for almost 30 minutes and the line behind me seemed to be never ending. Finally, after getting ourselves a table, we ordered and the lady boss had forewarned us that it is going to take a very long time. What they sell is rather simple. The famous item here is toast bread with butter and kaya and their local coffee. There are two other stalls here and they too seemed to be quite famous. She had informed us to have something from the other stalls too since her toast is going to take a very long time and we did exactly that.

Local Coffee @ RM 1.80

Toast with Butter & Kaya @RM 3.00 per set
The coffee came almost right away but the toast set was only sent to us after 30 minutes. Luckily we did have some other food items here which we had ordered from the other two stalls. Their Local Coffee was awesome. Truly authentic Hainanese stuff and I would definitely give it 9/10. Their Toast was another absolute treat. It was crisp yet soft an their homemade Kaya was just awesome. The butter was good too. Now I understand why this place is so famous. I would definitely rate their toast set at 10/10.

Wild Boar Curry @ RM 5.00

Chee Cheong Fun @ RM 6.00
Their Wild Boar Curry is from another stall that is located on the right side of the shop, near the entrance. This stall only sells plain white rice with a choice of either Wild Boar Curry or Chicken Curry. We did not go for the rice since we had ordered some plain bread as well and that Wild Boar Curry along cost us RM 5.00 . The curry came with lots of potatoes and lean meat. Slightly on the oily side but taste wise, the curry was drinkable. It was really good so much so, we ended up ordering another one. And the best part was by 11.45, she was sold out. Definitely a good dish to try here and my rating for this shall be 9/10. The Chee Cheong Fun stall is also located close to the entrance but she is on the left side. She only serves in Tupperware's as she avoids washing plates. And you don't get to choose the items, it's pretty much a standard set and it priced at RM 6.00 . Another good one and the sauces were delicious. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

For some excellent Chinese breakfast in Raub, I would definitely recommend Tong Nam Bee. Their Coffee and Toast is simply out of this world and their toast set comes with some really amazing butter and Kaya. You might also want to try the other stall located on the right side of the restaurant that sells curries with rice. You could just go for the curry and try it with some bread. Amazingly good! If you're here during the weekends, please be prepared to either come very early or else, be prepared to wait in line.

Restoran Ah Tok Chinese & Western Food @ Raub, Pahang

One of the very famous Chinese Restaurants in Raub is Restoran Ah Tok. This restaurant is quite famous for it's Hainanese Chicken Chop as well as some Grilled Fish dishes. It was through Foursquare that I came to know about this restaurant. Since the recommendations seemed really good, we decided to drop by for dinner.

Restoran Ah Tok Located Along Jalan Dato Abdullah
We were here at around 10 pm for a late dinner and the place was still buzzing with crowd. One of the reasons is definitely the Chinese New Year holidays and most locals would have come back and many were doing their reunion dinners here. Luckily, we managed to get a table the moment we arrived. Right after us, people were waiting in line for tables and they event went to the extent of placing tables by the side of the road. That is the kind of crowd that this restaurant draws Besides the food, this place is also a famous watering hole.

They had a pretty good offering on their menu and you might not believe me, it took us so much effort to even get someone's attention so that they could bring us the menu. Everyone was so busy and dishes were coming out from the kitchen like mass production. I am sure the cooks would have been totally drained by the end of that evening. Prices were on the high side but still, the crowd was overwhelming. We ordered their Hainanese Chicken Chop and the lady boss had warned us that it would take a while, at least 40 minutes. It's good that she had forewarned us and since we were in no rush, we agreed. And true enough, we only got our food after a 45 minute wait.

Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM 17.00
Their Hainanese Chicken Chop is fried and topped with tomato puree, peas and carrots. On the sides, you have some potato wedges, an omelette and some cucumbers & tomatoes. For the price, the portion was good. Taste wise, I enjoyed the crispy chicken and the sauce complimented it well. The fries were good too. Yes, this is definitely a restaurant that I would recommend trying in Raub. My rating for this dish shall be 8/10.

Durian Stalls Beside BHP Raub @ Raub, Pahang

I am sure there would be many Durian lovers who are reading this blog post right now and for all of you out there, I have some good news to share. We have all been in search of some good Durian stalls in the Klang Valley. I too have been doing the same and never did I know that Durian's of all variety are so cheap in Raub, Pahang.

BHP Outlet In Kampung Simpang Kalang, Raub

A Row Of Stalls
Just as you enter Raub town, there is a place where you get a stretch of fruit stalls selling a variety of fruits. I am not sure as to what time they commence business but we were here today at around 6 pm and the place was still open and buzzing with customers. In fact, most of the stalls here sell Durians and you would be able to get the whole range including Musang King. To make it simpler for you to locate these stalls, it is best if you set your navigation towards the BHP station and you'd surely not miss this place.

Dine In Options Are Available Too

Good Variety

Very Reasonable Prices
We stopped at one of the stalls that's located closer to the BHP Station. The crowd was good and he had a good range of varieties. Surprisingly, his prices were also very reasonable. In fact, I wouldn't be wrong to say that it was almost half the price of what we get in Kuala Lumpur.

If you're one who loves Durian, I would suggest making a day trip to Kampung Simpang Kalang that is located in Raub, Pahang, about 1KM away from the turning to Frasers Hills. There's a row of fruit stalls that predominantly sell Durians and their prices are extremely good. Good fruits at cheap prices.
