Restoran Canning Garden Chee Cheong Fun @ Ipoh, Perak

The Chee Cheong Fun stall from Restoran Canning Garden is a place that needs no introduction. This stall has been around for decades and draws customers from all over Ipoh. It is quite easy to locate this restaurant. They are located right at the end of the row of shops, just opposite the Canning Garden Wet Market.

The Restaurant

Customers Waiting In Line

The Son Runs The Business Now
In order to enjoy this fantastic plate of Chee Cheong Fun, I would recommend coming early in the  morning. Even as early as 8.00 am, you would definitely witness a line of customers queuing up to place their orders. Previously, this stall was run by the father and now, the son has taken over the business. Food is surely good and the queue speaks for itself. Waiting time does take a while but most often, it would not exceed 20 minutes.

Chee Cheong Fun (Small) @ RM 3.50

Lovely Colours And Mix Of Ingredients

All Stirred Up
The Chee Cheong Fun from Restoran Canning Garden would never let you down. Despite having got to queue up to place your orders, the wait is totally worth it. The flavours are so unique and deeply satisfying. If you're in Ipoh, this would be a must visit place for a good plate of Chee Cheong Fun.

Char Kuey Teow Jalan Loke Yew @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Char Kuey Teow Jalan Loke Yew is a Chinese Char Kuey Teow stall that is very famous with the locals in Tanjung Malim. He has been around for a number of years now and business has always been good.

The Stall Along Jalan Loke Yew

Leong Sui
If you come along Jalan Loke Yew, this stall is located right opposite of the Toto outlet and he is open from around 12.30 noon till 6 pm. To be safe, if you're planning to buy back for dinner, I would recommend coming at around 5 pm as he is mostly sold out by then. The place is just a simple shack with a handful of tables. If can be quite hot in the afternoons and even still, his customers do not mind it solely for the good Char Kuey Teow that he does. Drinks wise, there is Herbal Tea, Chinese Tea and some Porridge. I have tried his porridge and they are pretty good. Similarly, his Herbal Tea that you see above is quite good as well. My rating for this drink shall be 9/10.

Char Kuey Teow

Prawn Fritters
As far as the frying stuffs, he has Char Kuey Teow and Fried Mee or youcould even go for Kuey Teow Mee. He is very generous with his portions and spices. The add on's are pretty good as well. Forget about customising your orders here. Even if you tell him not to add cockles, your plate of Fried Noodles would still have cockles as he has a lot of orders and is quite forgetful. Taste wise, it is generally on the spicy side and my rating for this shall be 8/10. Not to be missed would also be his Prawn Fritters which is quite good and it sells out pretty fast as well. My rating for the latter shall be 8/10.

For a good plate of Char Kuey Teow in Tanjung Malim, I would recommend visiting this stall that is located along Jalan Loke Yew. The Char Kuey Teow tends to be on the spicy side and the flavours are just amazing. Another item that should not be missed here would be his Prawn Fritters.

Restoran Fu Man @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Restoran Fu Man is a Chinese restaurant that has a reputation for itself. Having been around for decades now, this restaurant even draws crowd from big cities like Kuala Lumpur. One of the main reason is the food itself and followed by the reasonable prices.

Restoran Fu Man in Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim
This restaurant is located in Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim. Location wise, it's very near to the Tanjung Malim toll plaza and there is ample of parking in that area. Due to the demand, they have renovated their restaurant some time back and now even have dining halls upstairs. This restaurant is mostly crowded during peak hours and it is advisable to come early so that you get your dishes in time.

Salted Pork Belly @ RM 22.00

Homemade Bean Curd @ RM 16.00
Both the Salted Pork Belly and the Homemade Bean Curd are specialty dishes found at this restaurant and many people come here for these. The Salted Pork Belly has such a unique texture and flavours that it is so good to be eaten even without the dip sauce. Their Homemade Bean Curd comes topped with some dark sauce and an assortment of mushrooms. Two delicious dishes that deserve a 9/10.

Teo Chew Style Steamed Fish @ RM 42.00

Soupy Vegetable Dish @ RM 18.00
The Teo Chew Style Steamed Fish was really good. Not too sour and the sourness was balanced and did not overpower the dish. It came with lots of Tofu and pickled vegetables as well. My rating for this shall be 8/10. This Soupy Vegetable dish was quite unique. The base sauce was quite creamy and the salted eggs along with fried lard gave it a twist of flavours. Another must try dish at this restaurant and my rating for this shall be 9/10.

Guinness Stout Pork Ribs @ RM 18.00

Stir Fried Vegetable @ RM 14.00
The Guinness Stout Pork Ribs were excellent. The ribs were meaty, so juicy and it was an addictive dish that disappeared in a matter of minutes. 10/10 shall be my rating for this. The Stir Fried Vegetable dish was good too and my rating for this shall be 8/10.

Sweet & Sour Prawns @ RM 32.00

Man Tau Buns
The Sweet & Sour Prawns were another excellent dish and they served this with a platter of Man Tau Buns. The gravy was so delicious, so much so, even when the Man Tau Buns were gone, we still kept scooping it out. The prawns were heavenly too and I would definitely give this a 9/10.

Restoran Fu Man is another good restaurant to visit in Tanjung Malim. The variety of dishes that they have is excellent and many of these dishes are their own specialty dishes. They have been featured in many newspapers we do find customers coming all the way from Kuala Lumpur. Good food and decent prices.

Restoran Seetharam @ Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

Seetharam Restaurant is a brand name that is very famous in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. Originally started in Brickfields and today they have a number of outlets in the Klang Valley. We were in Brickfields today at around lunch time and though I am not specifically a fan of the food here, my friend wanted to try the food at this restaurant. One good thing about this restaurant is that there is a public parking right behind this restaurant that makes it convenient to head there.

Rear Entrance From The Car Park

My Lunch
It is very much self service here especially when you go for their rice and curries. They had a good spread of vegetarian and non vegetarian food items and the variety was excellent. In fact, I wanted to have vegetarian food and the choices that were there makes you wonder what to take. I finally settled for some rice, Thannichaar, Venthaya Kulambu, Fried Brinjals, Keerai and Tofu Sambal.

Thannichaar

Venthaya Kulambu
Both the Thannichaar and Venthaya Kulambu was good. They were rich with spices and not the watery version. The add on's that they had added in the curries were good as well. My rating for both shall be 8/10.

Keerai & Tofu Sambal

Fried Brinjals
Their Keerai was quite nice and so was their Tofu Sambal. Only setback with the Tofu dish was that I would have preferred it to be spicier but I understand that being a restaurant, that had to follow the taste buds of the masses. Their Fried Brinjals however was excellent. My rating for the Keerai and Tofu Sambal would be 8/10 and I would give their Fried Brinjals 9/10.

Rasam
Their Rasam was excellent. It had such a wonderful flavour and was perfect to round up the meal. My rating for this would be 9/10.

Restoran Seetharam Brickfields does offer some good food and if you come during lunch hours, the variety that you get would be excellent. Prices are decent and parking is convenient. Definitely a good place to visit for a quick South Indian meal.

Portuguese Grill Fish @ Kajang, Selangor

There are many food places in Kajang that are business that based out of the owners homes and this is one such place. Famously known as Portuguese Grill Fish, this restaurant is located in Taman Hijau that is just along Jalan Reko, not too far away from the Kajang MRT Station.

The Restaurant in Taman Hijau, Kajang

Indoor & Outdoor Seating Available

Endorsed By The Rasikka Rusikka Team from ASTRO Vanavil
It's quite easy to located this restaurant, moreover they are clearly visible from Jalan Reko. It is practically a house and the owners live on the first floor. The entire ground floor has been converted into a dining area with indoor and outdoor seating. As you can see, even the team from Rasikka Rusikka has endorsed this restaurant and it is very famous among the locals, mainly for their Grilled Fish.

The main dish here is the Grilled Fish and they have a few styles of preparation. Nevertheless, they do also have a number of other dishes that you could order. All their dishes are listed in their menu. Prices are not cheap though and my recommendation would be to stick with their Grilled Fish and not get over excited and order the other dishes. Their noodle dishes are good though as I have tried them before.

Bitter Gourd Soup

Bitter Gourd Soup
To be honest, their Bitter Gourd Soup was nothing much. The ingredients were fresh, that I would have to agree but taste wise, it was bland and they were not able to bring out the taste from the Bitter Gourd. My rating for this shall be 4/10 and I would definitely skip this the next time around.

Ginger Garlic Steamed Fish

Fried Pork
As always, my preferred style of preparation for their fish would be the Ginger & Garlic Steamed version. It's packed with lots of ginger and garlic and the juices seep into the meat. A highly recommended preparation and my rating for this shall be 9/10. Similarly, their Fried Pork was awesome too. The marination was excellent and it wasn't greasy. Very juicy and delicious. Again, one that I would rate 9/10.

Despite being a humble set up, this home based restaurant is a favourite among the locals in Kajang. Their specialty would be the variety of Steamed Fish that they have and it's really good. This restaurant has also been endorsed by the Rasikka Rusikka Team from ASTRO Vanavil.

7 Spice Restaurant @ Johor Bahru, Johor

We were returning back from Singapore towards Kuala Lumpur and by the time we were done with the causeway, it was almost 5 pm. Having not had any lunch, we were literally starving. At first, we wanted to have a good Banana Leaf Rice meal but at this hour, it would be almost difficult to get fresh food. I have visited 7 Spice Restaurant a couple of years back and this place came to my mind and that was how we landed here.

7 Spice Restaurant in Johor Bahru
When we arrived, at first glance, this place seemed like it was closed for renovations. But luckily, only their ground floor was under renovation and the first floor was open for business as usual. Being a weekend, there was literally not many cars and parking was easy. The menu here has a wide variety of dishes, both vegetarian and non vegetarian and their prices are quite reasonable. After having decided what we wanted to have, we then placed our orders with the waiter.

Chapati @ RM 3.50 each & Romali Roti @ RM 6.50 each

Dhall Fry @ RM 11.00
Their Chapati was priced at RM 3.50 each. Obviously, it's not fair to compare these guys with day to day South Indian restaurants. I found their Chapati to be quite good. Not too thin and it was made using Atta Flour. My rating for this shall be 8/10. Romali Roti is another item that is not easily available nowadays and we were glad that they had them here. Priced at RM 6.50 each, it was surely quite satisfying taste wise and the texture was smooth. Again, one that I would rate at 8/10. Dhall Fry was priced at RM 11.00 and the portions were good. It was thick, sufficiently spiced and had a generous amount of ghee in it. I would rate this preparation at 8/10 as well.

Gobi Masala @ RM 13.00

Chili Mushroom @ RM 15.00
Their Gobi Masala was really good. Thick spicy gravy accompanied the cauliflowers and the preparation was excellent. Similarly, their Chili Mushroom was good too. My rating for both dishes shall be 9/10.

Masala Coffee @ RM 6.00
Their Masala Coffee was nice but I felt that they could have added more Masala. For me, it was still not as strong. Still, a good one to have after a sumptuous meal. We also had a cup of Masala Tea and that too was the same. Taste wise, I would rate both at 7/10.

The Bill
7 Spice Restaurant is located along Jalan Bertingkat Skudai, Johor Bahru. The variety on their menu is excellent and they have a range of vegetarian as well as non vegetarian dishes that they offer. Decent prices and the food is good. A good South Indian restaurant to visit in Johor Bahru.

Chettinad Catering & Restaurant @ Upper Paya Lebar Road, Singapore

Chettinad Catering & Restaurant is a day to day South Indian Restaurant that is located along Upper Paya Lebar Road. Besides operating this restaurant, they also actively do catering for private functions and hence the name being such.

The Restaurant Along Paya Lebar Road

Simple Layout

Prices of Dishes
The restaurant itself is quite simple in terms of layout and is quite easy to find as they are road fronting. The problem however would be the availability of parking bays. Very limited parking bays around this area and hence, I foresee that to be a problem. The restaurant itself is very simple and most of the people who were here seemed to be locals who come on a daily basis.

Iced Coffee

My Breakfast Set
In a matter of minutes, the drinks were served and so were the food. Pretty much one man manning the whole restaurant and everything was kinda friendly and informal. Their Iced Coffee was decent, not something really great and I would rate it at 7/10. Similarly, I had ordered an Idli and a Vadai and this came with some Sambar and two different chutneys. The Idli was okay, not as great as Udipi Ganesh Vilas that we had visited a few days back and the same applies to the Vadai. Practically what you would find in a neighbourhood restaurant and my rating for both shall be 7/10.

Coconut Chutney

Tomato Chutney

Sambar
I found both the Coconut as well as Tomato Chutneys to be a tad too watery and that was not to my liking. Rating wise, I would give them both 6/10. Their Sambar was better and that deserves a rating of 7/10.

We visited Chettinad Catering & Restaurant for breakfast and the food was decent. I would say that this is the typical variety and quality that we would find in a neighbourhood restaurant. I won't say that the food was great but acceptable taste wise.
