Satti Sorru.Com @ Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur

One of those places that is making waves now is this Satti Sorru.Com. There's so much positive reviews about this place on Facebook but it seems like no food bloggers have visited them since I could not find any such review on the internet. Since they have been drawing so much attention, I decided to drop by this evening.

The Stall In Persiaran Jubilee Off Jalan Loke Yew

Cooked From Scratch On Site

Huge Orders And Wait Time Is Long
This stall is located inside a Chinese restaurant along Persiaran Jubilee off Jalan Loke Yew and they are open daily from 6pm till midnight. Do come early as they tend to get sold out rather quickly and on most days, they are done by around 11. My suggestion would be to give them a call prior to coming, just to make sure.  Also, please be prepared to wait as it takes approximately 40 minutes to an hour for your orders to arrive.

Fried Chicken @ RM 5.00
Fried Chicken is one of the top sellers here and it is freshly fried to order. Lovely marination and it is fried to a crisp and it's so good to eat when it is hot. Once again, this too does take a long time so it's best to place your orders at one go and not in installments. My rating for this shall be 9/10.

Wild Boar Claypot Rice @ RM 10.00

Mutton Claypot Rice @ RM 12.00

Chicken Claypot Rice @ RM 8.00
They have Mutton, Chicken and Wild Boar Claypot Rice and these are freshly cooked to order. The base gravy is very much the same and so, regardless of the meat that you go for, the taste is the same. Just that the choice of meat differs. What I loved most about this was the thick spicy gravy that was used to cook the dish. It was so concentrated and that gave it a different dimension taste wise. For those who do not want to have your rice mixed with the gravy, you could request for that as well but my recommendation shall be to have the rice mixed with the gravy as it is absolutely delicious that way. A very unique dish and a brilliant idea. My rating for this dish shall be 9/10. For those who have not tried this Satti Sorru.Com yet, please do give them a try. It will definitely be a memorable experience.

Kim Lian Kee Restaurant @ Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras

Kim Lian Kee is a famous chain of Chinese restaurants that take pride in their Hokkien Mee. Having been started by Mr. Ong Kim Lian in 1927, they started their very first outlet at Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur. Today, they are strategically located at a number of malls in Chinese dominant areas in the Klang Valley. Once such mall is the Viva Mall that is located along Jalan Loke Yew in Cheras, which we visited today. Their Hokkien Mee is also listed as one of the top 10 Hokkien Mee's in the Klang Valley. Being a fan of Hokkien Mee, I have always wanted to try out their Hokkien Mee but never got a chance as I do not go to Petaling Street side often. As I was here this evening, the moment I sighted this outlet, it was a must try for me.

A Brief Write Up on Hokkien Mee

A Short Write Up On The Petaling Street Stall
Their outlet at Viva Mall is located on the first floor. It is quite close to the escalator and therefore locating it is quite easy. They occupy two shop lots here and also have an open air seating space. We were here at a non peak hour and even then, they were operating at full house capacity. That was impressive. Despite the busy times, the staffs were quite fast to attend to us. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a waitress who then handed their menu over to us. She then left us alone to decide on what we wanted to have.

Their menu was quite elaborate with a number of other food items which must have been recently added. Originally, this restaurant only had two or three signature dishes but over the years of commercialisation, a whole lot of other dishes have been included. We decided to stick with their famous dishes as we specifically came here for their Hokkien Mee.

Summary Of Dishes
We then called the waitress over and placed our orders. Our orders were quite simple. Two drinks and a Hokkien Mee which is my favourite and another Moonlight Kuey Teow which is my brother's favourite. Once the orders had been finalised, she then disappeared into the kitchen and then returned with a summary of orders and placed it at our table. She also made sure to ask us if we do consume Pork. That is a lovely gesture on her part and we said, Yes. She did that as there are quite a number of Hindu's who do not consume Pork.

Coca Cola @ RM 4.50

Milk Tea @ RM 3.90
The prices here are definitely a premium. It is the most expensive Hokkien Mee restaurant that I have visited thus far and this includes the others on the same list of top 10 Hokkien Mee places in the Klang Valley. A can of Coca Cola was priced at RM 4.50 and a glass of Milk Tea was priced at RM 3.90 . The Milk Tea here is supposed to be one of their recommended drinks and to my surprise, it was a watered down version. There was no sign of tea or milk when sipping on this and all that I could taste was pure bland watery taste. For me, this deserves nothing more than 1/10 . A sheer disappointment.

Moonlight Kuey Teow @ RM 12.90

Moonlight Kuey Teow @ RM 12.90

All Stirred Up
I was amazed to find this dish here as the only other place that I have seen this is at a similar Hokkien Mee stall called Leong Kee which is located at my hometown of Tanjung Malim. This version however did not taste as great as it seemed, nevertheless, it was still nice. Perhaps my expectations were tuned at Leong Kee's standards. I would rate this at 7.5/10 . A nice dish if your expectations are not great. Portions were good for two bowls (small Chinese bowls) and the price is definitely double of what I would usually pay at Leong Kee.

Hokkien Mee @ RM 11.90

Hokkien Mee @ RM 11.90
To my surprise (once again), the Hokkien Mee was not good. I am not saying that it was not as nice at this place or that place, what I am saying is that this was not good. It tasted very odd and was not up to it's mark. For me, this is a failed Hokkien Mee dish. I wonder why the crowd is so great here or have my taste buds gone wrong. Whichever it is, I would reiterate my stand that this is not good and does not deserve all the hype that has been built surrounding this restaurant. Perhaps, they were good in those days but definitely not now. Or perhaps they are still good at their original restaurant but not here. I am being nice by giving so many possible scenarios here but the crux of the matter is that the Hokkien Mee tried at this particular outlet today was not up to acceptable standards. When I checked the Foursquare reviews, it was confirmed that I am not alone. Every single review applauded the same message. In my opinion, this deserves a rating of 4/10 and nothing more .

Chili Paste With Belacan
Chili Paste with Belacan was also provided with the Hokkien Mee. This again was not up to it. Well, they had done this right up to the point of grinding the chili, once they added the Belacan, it was a dish that had gone wrong. They had added too much Belacan, perhaps to this batch which made it taste very odd and salty. I would rate this at 4/10 .

Lunch In Progress

Bill For The Evening
Overall, I am not impressed with this restaurant. Not a single item that I tried this afternoon was up to it's expected level. Prices were exorbitant and the food was very ordinary, if not sub standard. The service however was very good and I should congratulate the waiters for that. I truly wonder if they had paid any money to you know who to get onto that list! Starting to doubt the validity of that list now. I know of so many other Hokkien Mee places which are not on that list and have way way better food than this. Definitely not returning!

Hakka Yuen @ Cheras, Selangor

I was informed by some of my friends that there is this place in Taman Cheras which serves really authentic Hakka food and that you cannot get food as authentic as this elsewhere. That statement really caught my attention and I have always bookmarked this place as one of my must do places and today was the day that I got the chance. I am completely not familiar with Cheras but with the help of Mr. Garmin, my wonderful GPS, I was able to locate this place without errors though it was really a long drive from my place.

Hakka Yuen Restaurant in Taman Cheras

The Entrance to the Restaurant

The restaurant was set amidst a row of shops and the entire place seemed like a spiral of buildings to me. The entrance which had glass walls were stuck with various stickers which highlights the various promotions that they have to offer.

The Interior of the restaurant

The Interior of the Restaurant
The restaurant somehow seemed odd to me and there was no commercial sense in it. Once inside, it smelled very herbal and there were loads of newspaper cuttings put up on the walls. Somehow, it emanated a sense of being in a temple to me which is odd but that was how I felt. Then came the boss, a very nice gentleman who is very fond of cracking jokes with customers and he did the same with us too. Generally a nice man and then I finalised the orders with him after going through the menu. True enough, their menu is unique so much so those dishes are not commonly found in other commercial Hakka restaurants. Every other guest who were here this afternoon seemed to be like the usual bunch that visits and everyone knew everyone by first name. Then came an old couple, perhaps in their 80's. The Old man looked like the bosses father and he was assisted by his wife. They walked past us and they both greeted us and thanked us for coming here this afternoon and that really touched my heart. Wow....this gratitude is not something you get in a commercial restaurant and I was totally impressed by the very local gesture that emanated from this restaurant.

Coca Cola @ RM 2.50

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50
We ordered two Coca Colas which came at RM 2.50 each and two Chinese Tea's which came at RM 0.50 each which I felt was quite reasonable.

White Rice @ RM 1.50 (Big) and RM 1.00 (Small)
As per the above, we had four plates of white rice of which two were large and two small. The large one comes at RM 1.50 each and the small one at RM 1.00 each.

Hakka Traditional Mutton Soup @ RM 36.00

Closer Look at the Mutton Soup
Well, the first dish to arrive today was the above Hakka Traditional Mutton Soup. This was the small portion and it came at a price of RM 36.00 . The soup was extremely unique and it was even more herbal than Bak Kut Teh. That being said, it even turned off my dad who is a mutton lover but I being someone who enjoys traditional cuisine, really loved this. There was a split decision among us in the table but I shall be writing solely based on my experience. I feel that this is a really unique and authentic dish and is only suitable for those who are really into traditionally prepared dishes. Not for those people who are into commercial Chinese dishes which sometimes has an altered taste to suit every race. The broth was really thick and had a very strong scent of herbs. It came loaded with Tofu, Fuchok and Mutton. Even the Mutton tasted different as it had absorbed the soup really well. I, would rate this dish at 10/10 but I am not sure that you would rate it the same unless you are a true fan of authentic Hakka food.

Deep Fried Pork with Dark Soya Sauce @ RM 20.00
Well, this again was another dish of Pork Belly and it came with loads of Yam in the dish which was really good. The preparation method was really good and it was filled with goodness. The pork was also lovely, soft and juicy the way it should be. I would again rate this dish at 9.5/10 .

Claypot Stewed Soya Bean & Yong Tau Foo @ RM 20.00

Packed with Home Made Yong Tau Foo

The Stuffed Tofu was also great
Another unique dish that I have not tasted anywhere. I am a frequent visitor to Ipoh Road Hakka Yong Tau Foo which I think is good and unique but this was something else all together. The soup for one was very unique and again it had a very herbal base. Above that, there were loads of Soya Beans in this dish which added an extra punch to the dish. The Yong Tau Foo themselves were clearly homemade and handmade as each piece had a unique shape and size but with a standard taste across all the pieces which was really great. This again may not be preferred by those who are not able to tolerate authentic food but for me, it was really good. Once again, I would rate this dish at a perfect 10/10 and I think it was worth the RM 20 paid for this dish.

Fried Yau Mak @ RM 12.00
My parents did not quite like this dish but being a Bak Kut Teh lover, this is my most preferred side dish and I found it to be quite good here. The leaves were really fresh and even after cooking, they were crispy. The Soy Sauce was filled with Garlic which infused the taste and added a great lot to the taste but you could only appreciate this dish assuming you liked it in the first place. If this was your first attempt at this dish, then chances are, you may not like it. I for one, loved it and would rate this at 9/10 .

Steamed Siakap @ RM 45.00
This was a fantastic dish as was loved by everyone at the table. Let me warn you that the base sauce is extremely spicy and it goes really well with the fish which is dressed with nothing but chilies. Even with the fish done, I for one continued to drink the base sauce until it was completely cleared. I do not think that this dish is expensive for the price charged because the size of the fish was really decent and the taste was excellent. I think that anyone who loves steamed fish and loves spicy food would love this dish and being a fan of both, I would rate this at a perfect 10/10 . In fact I would advocate that this is one of the best steamed fish that I have tried. Let me reiterate my statement that it is one of the best and not the best as Lan Je also does serve great steamed fish but that is a different recipe all together. Generally without getting into the details, this is a must try dish here.

Overall, from my visit today, I would agree that this restaurant does have some great food to offer and I am sad that they have not got the relevant recognition from the general public in terms of support for what they deserve. Nevertheless, let me say again that the food here is only for true authentic lovers as the rest may be turned off by the authenticity of the taste which can work for them and against them. Having understood this, for true lovers of Hakka food, this is definitely a must try place.
