Sun Sun Nam Cheong is a long standing restaurant serving Hainanese food in the quiet town of Kuala Kubu Bharu. This restaurant has been around for more than 60 years now and today it is run by the son who himself has aged. There has been a lot of mention on this restaurant and the good food that is being served here, specifically their Hainanese Chicken Chop. The best Hainanese Chicken Chop that I have tried is of course at E&L Restaurant which is located in Tanjung Malim and for a change, we decided to drive down to try out this place. Though this restaurant does not have the Halal status, it is a Pork Free restaurant and as a result, you get a lot of Malay customers coming here, especially those heading to Frasers Hill who come here for a quick meal.

The Restaurant in KKB Town |

Very Hainanese Feel to it |
|
Interior of the restaurant |
The restaurant is located right in the middle of the Kuala Kubu Bharu town, just behind the Post Office. If you come to the old part of KKB town, it should not be too difficult to locate this restaurant. The feel and decor of the restaurant is definitely from the 50's.

The Menu |
It is very much a family run restaurant with a few Orang Asli helpers. They are generally friendly to all customers and the boss himself always comes up to the table and strikes a conversation with customers. He seems to know most of his customers well too. The Menu itself is not too elaborate, just a handful of dishes but that's sufficient. The prices aren't really cheap for this small town, in fact it is more expensive than Tanjung Malim. My guess is perhaps due to the popularity of this restaurant that the prices are slightly higher than their neighbours.

Fresh Orange @ RM 3.00 |
I had read some other food blogs about this place on the internet and there was so much praise for the Fresh Orange here whereby fellow bloggers found it to be really thick and filled with pulp. However, my experience was contrary to it. The Fresh Orange was diluted and it was not at all good. I would rate this at only 4/10 .
|
Hainanese Coffee @ RM 1.50 |
The Hainanese Coffee however was good, in fact it was really good. This definitely deserves a rating of 9.4/10 .
|
Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM 12.00 |
The Chicken Chop arrived quite fast, in fact in less than 15 minutes. One look at it, it seemed just okay and there wasn't much aroma emanating from the dish. I shall be reviewing the dish more the the lines to follow.
|
Chicken with Onion and Peas Gravy |
The Chicken was just okay. It was coated with the Kentucky flour and deep fried and the Onion and Peas gravy was poured over it. Honestly, I was disappointed. My expectations were much higher and perhaps this was the most pathetic Hainanese Chicken Chop that I have ever seen. I think in those days the preparation must have been way better but definitely the quality has dropped drastically. I would rate the chicken at 5/10 and the Onion and Peas batter at 5/10 . Not something that I would yearn for.
|
Crinkle Cut Fries |
In all the Hainanese Restaurants that I have tried, usually they make their own fries but here they use of the shelf crinkle cut fries. Even then, they were over fried. I would rate their fries at 4/10 .

An Omelette |
|
A Toast that was never toasted |
Besides, you also get an omelette and below it there is a mildly toasted slice of bread. The Omelette was okay but the toast again was disappointing. It was supposed to be toasted, perhaps was just put on a hot metal plate where it became slightly dry but never really got toasted. This is definitely disappointing.

Us Having Lunch |
Well, to summarise, it was not up to my expectations and honestly, I was disappointed. The food was just so so with the exception of the coffee. To pay RM 12.00 for this chops is definitely not worth it as I can get much better chops for RM 10.00 in Tanjung Malim. I think that the quality at this restaurant has definitely gone down compared to its glorious days and all that is left today, is just that glory that is shadowing over and if this persists, then that too would disappear sometime soon. This review is solely based on my experience with their Chicken Chop and not their other Hainanese dishes. Perhaps, they are still good, I would never know until I try.
