Kedai Makanan Hup Kee has been around for almost 40 years now in Tanjung Malim. This restaurant is located along Jalan Loke Yew in town. We have been coming here for a number of years now and have always been happy with the food and pricing. The owner is fondly known as 'Panjang' by the locals, as he is quite tall.

To those that are not familiar, it may be slightly difficult to locate this restaurant as it is not road fronting. There are two ways to access this restaurant. The first way is via Jalan Loke Yew. If you are familiar with Bond Mega Pharmacy which is at one end of the row of shops along Jalan Loke Yew, walk on till the other end. You would see a Char Kuey Teow stall here. At this point turn right and keep walking behind the Chicken Rice stall. Then you would be able to see this stall. The other way would be to access from the old Rex Cinema way which takes you to the back and you would be able to access the side of the restaurant and enter from there. After all, this ain't so difficult and in case you cannot find the place, just ask anyone and they would point this restaurant to you. Business here starts around 7.30 am every day and goes on till roughly 4 pm. In the mornings, there are different items that are offered as part of their breakfast offering and come 11 am, he starts preparing the lunch items.

Parents Choosing Their Dishes |
The beauty of this place is that everything is so informal and there is a personal connection with the owner. Besides the usual mixed rice items, he also does noodle dishes as well as other items that you would expect in a usual Chinese Seafood Restaurant. Sometimes, I used to go fishing and would bring the fish here for him to cook and he is quite good. Another good thing here is that as the food items gets sold out, he sometimes would ask customers what they would like to have, prepare them and then put those dishes on the display rack for customers to have their preferred lunch. Almost like at home feeling and the dishes have typically those home-cooked taste without those artificial flavourings and MSG. Here he is assisted by his wife and another assistant. Customers would have to go in to the rack and choose their dishes. His wife then makes a note on the number of items and their prices and handles the cash collection at the end of the meal.

Chinese Tea On The House |
|
Slightly Diluted Today |
Another great practice here is their free flow of Chinese Tea. One would see a pot of Chinese Tea placed on every table and you just have to get your glass and top up as many times as you would like to have. The setback today was that we arrived late, at 2.30 pm and by that time, it was watered down as they were about to close shop within an hour or so.

We all helped ourselves individually as per the above photographs. I do not want to detail based on the individual as we may have some common dishes. Hence, I shall review the items taken separately below. If you see based on the volume and number of items taken, the price is definitely quite reasonable.

Chicken Curry with Potato's |
|
The Gravy |
The Chicken Curry, although prepared by a Chinese, was quite similar to the Indian style of preparation. It was prepared with loads of Potato's. The curry was thick, with no coconut milk used in the preparation and it was very delicious. I would rate this Chicken Curry at 9.3/10 .
|
Omelette |
The Omelette was very good too. Many would be surprised if I told you that you only used Grade A Eggs. And he always leaves the Yolk slightly runny. I simply love his omelettes and would rate this at 9.5/10 .
|
Stir Fried Kangkung |
His Stir Fried Kangkung is another good preparation here and is made with very little oil. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .
|
Stir Fried Bendi |
His Bendi's are usually quite good and they taste delicious. He makes them crispy without over killing the nutrition. Just see how green it is even after being cooked. Just love them and I would rate this at 9/10 .
|
Stir Fried Long Beans |
This was a slight let down today. Not sure what went wrong. Perhaps his supply was not that fresh for the day. Taste was just okay. I would rate this at 7/10 .
|
Stewed Pork Belly |
|
The Gravy |
The Stewed Pork Belly was awesome but it is not for those who are health conscious. As we all know, Pork Belly is quite greasy and contains a high amount of fat. If you are okay with that, then you would love this dish, just like I did. I would rate this preparation at 9.2/10 .
|
Chicken Stew with Potato's |
The Chicken Stew was heavenly! It came with lots of Potato's and tasted really great. The Chicken chunks were cooked to perfection too. I would rate this at 9.6/10 .
|
Bitter Gourd with Bean Curd |
Oh, this was another fantastic dish. Thick cuts of Bitter Gourd were cooked with Bean Curd and they tasted absolutely great. One of the best places for this preparation. Loved it thoroughly! I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

Clear Soup On The House |
When you take the mixed rice, this clear soup is provided on the house. The soup was nice but it was not as good as the other dishes. I believe that this is prepared using waste products and must have been prepared by his wife. For me, this only deserves a rating of 6/10 .
On the whole, the dining experience was nothing short of being fantastic. All of is enjoyed our lunch and this has been consistent over the years. Definitely a place that I would highly recommend if you are looking for a decent meal at a reasonable price in town. In a nutshell, Highly Recommended!
