Restoran Ga Onn @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

This is an entry about one of the famous Chinese Restaurants in Tanjung Malim, Perak that is usually patronised by the locals. Though there are other famous restaurants here, those are usually places that are visited by tourists and people from Kuala Lumpur who drive down for a quick and cheap meal, by KL standards. For us locals, we feel those restaurants are expensive and we are able to get equally good food here at local rates.

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50

The restaurant is simple in its layout and design. Being located in Taman Anggerik Desa which is right opposite the Hindu Temple in Tanjung Malim, has given them a great advantage in terms of parking space and accessibility. This is also the famous junction for vehicles coming from all directions that they would have to end up waiting at these traffic lights and this in turn gives clear visibility of the restaurant. Ordering is also fairly straightforward. There are no menu's whatsoever and you would just mention the dishes that you would like and they would prepare them accordingly. One thing that I like most about this restaurant is the honesty of the owners. When you order too many dishes, they would say that it is a little too much and usually even with a number of dishes, you do not have to mention big or small as he would always adjust the portions accordingly. That kind of sincerity is something that is still there in small towns like this.

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 10.00

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 10.00
This is one of our favourite dishes here. The Kangkung is cleaned very well and you do not get traces of sediments. In some restaurants, the greens are not properly cleaned and you do get some sand like thing in the dish and this is specially prominent to Kangkungs. Here however, it is thoroughly cleaned. The preparation too comes with a good amount of Belacan that gives a very aromatic taste to the dish. Definitely a good preparation and I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Yee Huat with Ginger @ RM 12.00

Closer look at the homemade fish paste
The Fish Paste (Yee Huat) is prepared at this restaurant and I like the way that it is prepared. Boneless and made with very fresh meat, the Fish Paste taste's just excellent. It is cotton like soft and tender and goes very well with the above style. Loads of ginger is also added to the dish to give it a wholesome taste. I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Marmite Pork Ribs (Pai Kuat) @ RM 12.00

Marmite Pork Ribs (Pai Kuat) @ RM 12.00
Another excellent preparation. The Pork Ribs came with just the right amount of meat attached to it. Coated with flour and cooked with Marmite, the dish was simply delicious. The meat was still tender and not overcooked and the Marmite seeped in to the meat perfectly well. I would rate this dish at 9.1/10 .

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 18.00

Mantis Prawns with Salted Eggs @ RM 18.00
This is one of my brother's favourite dish and he just loves the preparation here. Sometimes, he even goes to the extent of ordering another helping of the same. The Mantis Prawns are fried to a perfect crispness and is coated with salted eggs. Definitely a very good dish. I would rate this dish at 9.3/10 .

Deep Fried Fish with Soy Sauce @ RM 18.00

Deep Fried Fish with Soy Sauce @ RM 18.00
Well, in not many places that you can still get a full fish dish for the price of RM 18.00 . Last week, I tried the same dish in Kuala Lumpur and was charged RM 36.00 for it. Despite being half the price, the preparation was anytime better. The fish was crispy and the soy sauce was sauteed with fried onions went perfectly well. I would rate this preparation at 9.5/10 .

We dine at this restaurant at least once a week and the food has always been consistent. This is one of those places where you could say that the food is great, the price is cheap and the service is just excellent. What more would one want from a restaurant. Definitely a great place to drop by for a good meal.
