Restoran Kang Guan @ Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat

If you are looking for good and fresh seafood served at very cheap prices, than Restaurant Kang Guan is the place. Having been in operation for 55 years now, this restaurant is located on the left near the bridge heading to Carey Island. It may seem like quite a drive from Kuala Lumpur but the distance is worth travelling. To head to this place, take the NKVE (depending where you are) and connect onto ELITE (the highway heading to KLIA) and exit at the Westport exit which connects to KESAS Highway. Once you get onto Kesas, just keep driving south and exit at Banting. At the traffic lights, turn left and keep driving straight until you pass a town and shortly thereafter, you would see the signage to Carey Island. All in all, it takes about an hour (assuming you adhere to the speed limits all the way) assuming you are coming from Damansara and can be much shorter if you are coming from Puchong or Sunway.

The Bridge heading to Carey Island
This restaurant is usually running at full capacity on most days. Specially weekends and on Public Holidays, it would be full house and it is always wise to call early and book a table. I even go to the extent of informing the time of arrival and ordering my dishes before hand. That way, you do not get items being sold out when you arrive there. Do note that crabs tend to be sold out rather fast on most days and it is best to book prior to arrival. If you come here during the day, you would be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Straits of Malacca that is visible from this restaurant. There are ample of parking spaces here and that should not be a concern. You would find a lot of Muslim customers here too as they do not serve Pork but they do not have the Halal status as alcohol is served.

Peanuts @ RM 2.00

Waiting for our Meals to Arrive

Busy Chatting....
If you had not done any prior ordering, it would not be a problem except that you may risk not being able to have some kind of seafood as it may be sold out. Otherwise, ordering is quite fast here. They would hand you a menu and you could choose your favourite dishes from there. My usual practice here is that I always avoid ordering rice and the meal is based solely on seafood and perhaps a small dish of noodles. Usually within 20 minutes from time of order, the dishes start arriving.

Fried Tong Fun @ RM 8.00
Although requested for two people, a huge platter of Fried Tong Fun was placed before us. It was cooked to somewhat the Hokkien Style of preparation and it had loads of Squid, Prawns and Fish Paste in it. The noodles too were moist and springy and that shows that it was fresh. The flavours of the dish were strong and it had a character of it's own. Definitely a well prepared dish and I would rate it at 9.5/10 .

Squid Deep Fried in Flour @ RM 12.00
When I have this same dish with the same portion size in Kuala Lumpur, it would come to at least RM 25.00 and here it was a mere RM 12.00 . The flour coating was excellent and definitely something was added to it to make it taste better but I was just not able to identify it. Definitely not Ajinomoto as I did not feel thirsty after having this. The Squids too were fried to a Golden Brown colour and were crispy and juicy with every bite. The freshness of the Squid was very evident. I would rate this dish at 9.7/10 .

Stir Fried Mantis Prawns @ RM 12.00
The Mantis Prawns were stir fried in a slightly sweet and spicy sauce and it came with diced onions and dried chilies. The Dried Chilies must have contributed to the spicy taste and the Mantis Prawns were crisp with every bite. Loved this dish! For the same dish, you would have to pay at least double the price in Kuala Lumpur. I would rate this dish at 9.7/10 .

Assam Fish @ RM 42.00
The Assam Fish is a signature dish here and it is usually made with quality saltwater fish. As this is a 'real' seafood restaurant, you do not get freshwater fish here. If you love fish, this is a must try dish. The picture is just not too good to show the actual size of the fish but it was huge. The Assam style preparation was slightly sour and spicy. The fish is steamed and the sauce is then poured over it along with some Okra, diced Onions and Tomato's. We thoroughly enjoyed this dish and I would rate it at 10/10 .

Lala Stir Fried with Garlic & Soy Sauce @ RM 12.00

Closer Look At The Clam
Having usually tried the dry style, this time we opted to try something different. The Lala here was Stir Fried with Garlic and Soy Sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The clams too were extremely huge and I have not seen clams that big elsewhere. Each clam was equivalent to the size of a standard business card. The ginger was slow cooked thus allowing it's juices to be seeped into the Soy Sauce and that invariably being seeped into the clams. This was a dish that you would not be satisfied if you did not get your fingers dirty. Absolutely delicious! I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Butter Nestum Prawns @ RM 23.00

The Prawns Looking Absolutely Delicious
When you order Butter Prawns here, what you get is the Butter Nestum Prawns. It is just their practice to cook it that way and you won't regret it, they were heavenly. This dish priced at RM 23.00, came with 14 massive prawns and they were all extremely fresh. The sweet taste of the prawn meat and the juicy taste of butter and Nestum went very well together. I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Sweet & Sour Crabs @ RM 52.00

Deliciously Juicy Crabs
Crabs are another must try dish here. Here you only get good quality, fresh and extra large crabs being cooked to perfection. The minimum order size is however 1 Kilogram. If only we could eat some more, I would have surely ordered the Man Tau Buns too as I know that those buns are prepared very well here. Although I would usually prefer the Salted Duck  Egg Crabs or Kam Heong Crabs, these guys made me fall in love with this style of preparation too. It was so delicious so much so I was scooping the gravy and eating it when the crabs were done. Again, I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Heading Back to our Car after a heavy meal

Opening Hours
This was definitely a very satisfying meal and the total bill including drinks came to RM 169.40 which I felt was quite cheap. Of course if you Google this place you get different reviews and I am aware of that but I definitely feel that this is a great place to head for seafood especially when you have the company of the entire family. After all, good food is best when shared among loved ones!!!

Restoran Yin Her @ Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, Sungai Buloh

If you are looking for good Chinese restaurants that serve course dinner around Sungai Buloh, then Restaurant Yin Her is one good option. Being located inside the Sungai Buloh New Village, this restaurant has it's own loyal crowd that come from afar for it's cheap and good food. If you are coming from the old Sungai Buloh - Shah Alam road and assuming the Military Camp is on your right, you would have to turn right shortly at the traffic lights. Once you have turned in, go straight for another 300 meters and you would be able to see a big sign that says turn left on an unpaved road leading to the restaurant. Within 100 meters, you would arrive at this restaurant which is located right beside a fishing pond.

Restaurant Yin Her in Sungai Buloh New Village

Air Conditioned Space as well as Open Air Dining Area is available

All Looking At The Fishing Pond

The Fishing Pond
This restaurant has ample of parking spaces. Once inside, you would have to enter through the air conditioned dining space but I would recommend you to head to the open air dining space which is built on an elevated platform above the pond where it is more scenic. Unlike other restaurants beside a pond like this, you do not get the stench coming from the pond as it is well treated and it is a treat to watch these anglers in action. This space is also well ventilated with fans thus keeping the place rather cool.

Peanuts @ RM 3.00

Jasmine Tea @ RM 4.00

White Rice (Big) @ RM 1.20
There isn't much of a menu card here and most of the ordering is done through the lady boss's recommendations, unless you are familiar with their dishes. If you are a first timer here, then ask her for their Signature dishes like what I did today and she would enlist all their dishes and you could then choose the ones that you would like to have. Don't worry about over ordering as she is quite honest and would cut you off saying that's it's a little too much for the number of pax. Also, she would adjust the portion sizes based on the number of dishes ordered. Although we arrived here at almost 2 pm, the place was still filled with customers.

Pucuk Paku with Belacan @ RM 10.00
Usually we would end up ordering Kangkung with Belacan but today the lady boss recommended us to try the above which was good for a change. The dish, was very well prepared and you can see that it had loads of Belacan, dried shrimps and onions in the sauce. The Pucuk Paku was also still crispy and not overcooked. The portion size too was quite big and I was surprised that it was only priced at RM 10.00 . I would rate this dish at 9.2/10 .

Home Made Todu in Soy Sauce @ RM 12.00
Their Tofu was quite unique. It was home made and it had some vegetables inside the Tofu which tasted quite nice. The Tofu was soft despite having the vegetables inside and it did not entangle to one another while  trying to cut it. This dish came with a thick starchy soy sauce at the base and also some mushrooms on the sides. Definitely a dish worth trying. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .

Salted Egg Mantis Prawn @ RM 15.00
This dish was pretty good too. The Salted Eggs coating stuck well to the Mantis Prawns giving it a full flavour. The only setback with this dish is the portion size which I felt was a little less for the price. Otherwise, the dish was good. I would rate this dish at 9.2/10 .

Pork Ribs in Yam @ RM 18.00
This was a fantastic dish. I just loved the way the Pork Ribs were cooked with the Yam and all the ingredients seemed to sit in so perfectly. There were Yam cubes in the dish and therefore not all the Yam had melted and seeped into the meat. This is the first time I am having Pork Ribs prepared this way and it seems that I have fallen in love with it. I would rate this dish at a perfect 10/10 .

Nyonya Style Fish @ RM 22.00
You could choose to have this dish with a number of different fish but we choose the Red Talapia. Although it is a fresh water fish, it was cleaned well and it did not have the 'mud' taste to it. This Nyonya style cooking is one of their signature styles and you take a peek at the other tables, you would observe that almost every table would have ordered this dish. The gravy had a perfect blend of sour and spicy taste to it. The good thing was that the gravy was abundant and it was loaded with vegetables and pineapple cubes. Definitely a good dish and again I was impressed with the price when receiving the bill. This huge fish only costed us RM 22.00 . I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Bubur Cha Cha served on the house
Finally, when lunch was done, they served us the above Bubur Cha Cha which was on the house. This restaurant definitely has some very good dishes to offer and they seem to be able to keep the prices so low without compromising the quality of the dishes. I am truly impressed with this place and definitely we had a very satisfying meal which is very much wallet friendly.

Din Tai Fung @ e@Curve, Petaling Jaya

Having started with a humble beginning in Taipei in 1970, today Din Tai Fung is voted as the Top 10 Restaurants in the World and have established their presence in ten countries. Having had the family together for the Deepavali holidays, we decided to head to their outlet in e@Curve for a sumptuous lunch.

Din Tai Fung @ e@Curve

Interior of the Restaurant
Their outlet here is relatively large as it occupies four  shop lots. There are various sections available for customers to dine and as it was rather full today, we were placed at the far left section, close to the kitchen. The cleanliness here was really good and the staffs were very efficient. Right from greeting us at the entrance to even serving the dishes, everything seemed so perfect. It was a pleasure being able to sit near the kitchen as we were able to see how the food was being prepared and the skill of the Chef's in making these dumplings.

A Brief of their Xiao Long Bao

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu
It took me a while to digest their menu as there were so many dishes being offered and they all looked good. After going through their menu for almost 20 minutes, we decided on our orders and finalised them with the waiter.

Jasmine Pearl Tea (Fujian China Green Tea) @ RM 14.00
When you order tea here, it comes in two pots. One being filled with tea and the other is empty. You would need to empty the first serving into the empty pot and then the earlier one with the leaves still intact is topped up with hot water. With every pot you purchase, you get two refills free. The above Jasmine Pearl Tea was a soft flavour tea and it had a distinctive taste of it's own. I definitely liked it and would rate this tea at 9.3/10 .

Taiwanese Century Egg @ RM 4.80
The above starters was pretty good. The eggs were soft and fluffy yet firm on the texture. You get a thinly sliced and pickled ginger on the yolk and it has to be consumed in one bite to give the full flavour. I would rate this dish at 9.2/10 .

Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wanton @ RM 10.00
The Shrimp and Pork Wanton comes in a very spicy curry like gravy at the bottom. What amazed me with the dumplings here is how well they had crafted it. Yes, crafted is the right word as it was so perfect. The skin was amazingly thin and the fillings were just delicious. I would rate this dish at 9.7/10 .

Xiao Long Bau @ RM 10.30
The acclaimed Xiao Long Bau is definitely a must try dish here. Being one of the world's best, it is delicately made with very fine skill. Definitely the best that I have tried till date. I would rate this at 10/10 .

Shanghai Style Deep Fried Fish @ RM 19.50
If you had not read their menu, one would assume that this dish was sliced pork as it tasted just like that but in actual fact, it is sliced fish. The meat was thinly sliced and fried with honey and it was cooked to perfection. This is another dish that is a must try at this restaurant and I have not tasted this preparation elsewhere. I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Shrimp & Pork Shio Mai @ RM 15.30
The Pork was bagged in very thin skin along with some vinegar and the shrimp was placed on the top making it look like a flower that is just blooming and the taste was absolutely delicious. Both the presentation and preparation were perfect. This deserves another full rating of 10/10 .

Shrimp & Pork Fried Rice @ RM 15.50
Their Fried Rice was good too. It came with loads of Shrimp, Dried Shrimp, Sliced Pork and Eggs. The portion was lavish in the sense that it was good to be shared by three people. Although I find this to be good, I have still tasted better Fried Rice in other similar restaurants. Nevertheless, I would rate the above preparation at 8.8/10 .

Pork Bun @ RM 6.80
Their Pork Bun came with a good amount of fillings which were slightly on the 'Tai Bao' kind of taste. Here the bun came with a much thicker skin and it had to be peeled off  before consuming. Between this and their Xiao Long Bau, I would still prefer the latter as it was world's apart. I would rate their Pork Bun at 8.6/10 .

Overall, our dining experience here today was definitely a very good one. Most of their food served were excellent and the service provided was prompt, efficient and smooth. The pricing too was quite reasonable bearing in mind the quality of the food served. I would definitely return here again and get my hands on more dishes that I was not able to try today.
