Restoran Lan Je (Aman Puri) Sdn Bhd @ Desa Aman Puri, Kuala Lumpur

Having visited this outlet about ten days back, my brother kept pestering me to take him for that same steamed fish again and tonight here we are once again for dinner.

This time around, we decided to sit outside as it was a cool night. As traffic is near zero around this time at this street, it is quite safe to be seated outside by the road.

The Menu

Cutlery In Hot Water

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50
As always, we ordered one fish each. Not wanting to make the same mistake of ordering super spicy, we went for the medium spicy fish. This time around, we also ordered a plate of the Steamed Prawns as that is the only dish that I have not tried at this restaurant and it has been our wish to try that. Since we were really in the 'eating' mood, decided to go for it.

Medium Spicy Steamed Fish @ RM 15.00

Medium Spicy Steamed Fish @ RM 15.00

Medium Spicy Steamed Fish @ RM 15.00
In about 20 minutes, the medium spicy fish arrived. As always, the fish was perfectly done. Steamed with garlic and bird eye chili, the fish was a treat to steamed fish lovers. Just admire the consistency of taste across all their outlets. As mentioned in my previous blog on the same restaurant but in Kota Damansara, here too the fish is steamed in stacked rattan baskets and not the modern way. Perhaps this is what gets the taste going. It was simply a perfect dish and I would rate this at 10/10 .

Steamed Prawns @ RM 21.00

Steamed Prawns @ RM 21.00

Steamed Prawns @ RM 21.00

Steamed Prawns @ RM 21.00
For RM 21.00, it came with seven medium sized prawns laden with loads of garlic and chili. The prawns were absolutely awesome, never did it expect this to be this good. It seems that going forward my must order dishes here would be their steamed fish and this steamed prawns. You have to taste it to know how good it was. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the dish and I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

The Bill
In summary, both of us enjoyed our dinner. Unlike the Kota Damansara outlet, this outlet opens till 10 pm at night. Once again I would like to stress that if you love steamed fish or steamed prawns, then this is a must visit restaurant. You would surely love the steamed fish and steamed prawns here. As mentioned in my previous blogs on the same restaurant, most of their other food items here are very average and that is why you would see most people sticking to the steamed fish. Do note that this is a Pork Free restaurant and every now and then you would be able to see Muslim customers dining here too.

Restoran Ho Yee Kee @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

I have blogged on this shop before but that entry was on Hen Wong Lo which is the typical Chinese Restaurant serving seafood and other Chinese dishes and this entry would be on Ho Yee Kee. As mentioned before, this restaurant is unique as Hen Wong Lo operates all day long whereas Ho Yee Kee operates from breakfast to lunch only.

Char Kuey Teow Stall On The Far Left
Restaurant Ho  Yee Kee operates from 7.30 am daily. They sell Chee Cheong Fun and Wan Tan Mee. Besides this, on the far left corner of this restaurant, there is a lady that sells Char Kuey Teow and Fried Noodles. A few of my friends had recommended me to try her Kuey Teow as they claimed it to be quite good. We arrived here around 2 pm today and the other breakfast items were already sold out. That was not an issue for us as we were here to predominantly try the Char Kuey Teow. We ordered three plates and you can always customise your order with her as she is flexible in that sense.

The Char Kuey Teow Stall
Just like other Char Kuey Teow vendors, she makes one plate at a time to ensure consistency of taste. But it was quite fast for her to prepare three plates for us and it was not a long wait. Within minutes, the dishes arrived.

Char Kuey Teow @ RM 4.00 per plate

Char Kuey Teow @ RM 4.00 per plate

Char Kuey Teow @ RM 4.00 per plate
The Char Kuey Teow came hot with loads of cockles, egg and beansprouts. I had asked her to prepare mine slightly spicy and she did exactly as requested. Taste wise, it was really good. No wonder my friends recommended me to try this place. It was definitely one of the best in it's class. No doubt, for now this is the best Char Kuey Teow in Tanjung Malim. My rating for this dish shall be 9.3/10 .

If you are looking for a good plate of Char Kuey Teow in Tanjung Malim, look no further as this is the best in town for now. Definitely worth giving the place a try. Highly recommended!

Restoran Nasi Kandar Seri Kota Sdn Bhd @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

Restoran Nasi Kandar Seri Kota is located in Taman Bahtera, near the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris hostel. The locality which is away from town makes it a favourite place among the locals who want to have a quiet tea and meal.

The Restaurant

The Restaurant

Curries
Previously, they used to be based opposite the Hindu temple and in recent years, have moved to this locality. My brother and I usually come here when we want to have a quiet tea. This restaurant occupies a corner unit and that has given them the added advantage of having an airy and spacious seating space for customers. The area too usually has a mild breeze which makes the place cool without the usual restaurant heat that comes from the kitchen. All the staffs here are foreigners and it is pretty much managed by a Nepalese supervisor. This restaurant operates 24 hours daily. Usually we are here just for a drink and it was today, the first time that we decided on trying out their food.

Teh O @ RM 1.00
This is my brother's favourite drink every time he comes here. He would usually have at least two of those before leaving. The Teh O here is nice and is usually served boiling hot. I would rate their Tea at 8.5/10 .

Teh Tarik @ RM 1.20
This is my favourite drink here. The Tea here is fixed well, despite being made by the Nepalese workers. The flavours are balanced and deserved a rating of 8.5/10 . Not great, but good.

Roti Canai @ RM 1.00 each

Roti Canai @ RM 1.00 each
They do serve some decent Roti Canai's here. I find them to be above average, better than most places but definitely not up to the 'excellent' level. There is still room for improvement. My rating for this shall be 7/10 . I also took away some Capati's to have at home which I forgot to take a picture of. It was priced at RM 1.00 each too. Their Capati's were horrible. It was hard and tasted quite bad. I would rate them at 4/10, definitely not recommended.

Dhall Curry

Dhall Curry
Their Dhall Curry was just so so. For me, it was just an average Dhall Curry that you get in most places. Not worthy of any mention. I would rate this at 5/10 .

Fish Curry

Fish Curry
Their Fish Curry was definitely better than their Dhall Curry, nevertheless it still had loads of room for improvement. Slightly on the oily side, it was just okay. I would rate this at 6.5/10 .

Magee Curry @ RM 3.70

Magee Curry @ RM 3.70
This dish, I found it to be very good. In fact anytime better than most other restaurants out there. It came with loads of bird eye chili and was on the spicy side, just the way I love. The curry too was thick and come with a decent amount of vegetables. Definitely a recommended dish here and I shall rate it at 9/10 .

On the whole, besides the drinks the only food that I truly enjoyed was their Magee Curry. The rest was just so so and having tasted their curries, I believe the rice dishes and gravies would also be quite similar. Definitely needs improvement in this area, otherwise a great place for a good cup of tea.

Kueh Pau Melayu Depan Telekom @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Before the North South Highway, all commuters from north to south and vice versa would have had to pass this little town of Tanjung Malim and many of the old timers would still remember the good food that was available here. Today, those good old food still remain available, but only to locals as most commuters using the highway would not longer be passing this town. Being born and bred here, it is my responsibility to blog on all the good food that is still available here and as such this particular entry is on one such Pau stall that still exists till today.

Telekom Malaysia Office in Tanjung Malim

By The Side of The Bus Stop
This Pau stall is located along Jalan Besar, which is the main trunk road of the old town and is directly in front of the Telekom Malaysia building, opposite Dollah's Stall. Ask any local and they would direct you here.

3 Different Pau's Available

Kueh Pau Melayu Stall

The Same Old Gentleman
This stall has been around for more than 30 years now, at this same very spot. Just like those days, he still peddles the tricycle from his house to this spot everyday. He has three variety of Pau's, Black Bean, Sekaya and Chicken Curry. When  people mention of Pau's in Tanjung Malim, most outsiders would think of the Yin Mun Pau but trust me, locals do not go there. That restaurant is typically a tourist destination and locals still get their pau's from this gentleman. Those days, they were 40 cents each and even today, they are a mere RM 1 each which is way cheaper and better than what you get from the famous neighbour or anywhere else in Kuala Lumpur.

Pau Sekaya @ RM 1.00 each

Pau Sekaya @ RM 1.00 each
Just look at the amount of filling that you get in the Pau, it is probably thrice the amount from the famous neighbour. This Pau is just so good that you can go on having one after another. I would rate this at 9.1/10 .

Pau Kacang Hitam @ RM 1.00 each

Pau Kacang Hitam @ RM 1.00 each
He does not have seating space so everything has got to be take away's. This is another good Pau that you get there. I would rate this at 9.1/10 .

Curry Chicken Pau @ RM 1.00

Curry Chicken Pau @ RM 1.00
This is my all time favourite here and at a single sitting, I can go on popping at least five Pau's. This Pau is so delicious that you actually get real chicken meat in it. The curry is delicious and the dough is so soft. Anytime better than Yik Mun's. I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

If you happen to pass this side of the world, do make it a point to give this Pau a try, a sure no regrets. I happen to go back every weekend and most of my classmates have not been back like in 20 years. Many of them do place orders with me to get these for them and I do bring them back to KL on Sundays and put them in the freezer. They would collect it the next day and re-steam them. They do not mind as it is still so good. Definitely better than any of those Pau's that you get in Kuala Lumpur.

Restoran Basil Leaves @ Kajang, Selangor

Having traveled to Kajang today, I telephoned a few of my friends from Kajang to get their feedback on where I could get a good Indian meal and they suggested me to head to a restaurant called Basil Leaves that is located in Taman Kajang Sentral. Thanks to Garmin, I was able to find the place without going astray.

Interior of the Restaurant
From the main road, this restaurant is clearly visible and there was ample of parking spaces, even during business hours. The restaurant occupies two shop units and it is very nicely maintained. The place was air conditioned and very clean. The staffs were all from Tamil Nadu and they were chatty and helpful. While chatting with them, I learned that every Fridays for lunch, they have a vegetarian buffet spread for only RM 11.00 and that includes a spread of 21 items and it is eat all you can concept. Well, if I had known this earlier, I would have made my journey on a Friday. Anyway, since I am already here, it's time to check out the food here.

Their menu is very comprehensive and there is a huge list of dishes to choose from. Some good breakfast variety is also available. These food items have become scarce to find these days and it is great to know that they have them here. The waiter left us with the menu for about 10 minutes and then returned to get the orders.

Warm Water @ RM 0.30

Coca Cola @ RM 2.00

Teh O @ RM 1.50
The drinks were reasonably priced, except for the warm water which was charged at 30 cents. Taste of the tea was good and I would rate their Teh O at 8.5/10 .

Thali Set @ RM 7.50 per set
My father and I went for their Thali Set. Priced at RM 7.50 per set, it came with a good 9 dishes, rice and papadam. Looks good, now time to taste them one by one.

Tamarind Rice
The Tamarind Rice was nice, had balanced flavours and I would definitely say that this is a well prepared Tamarind Rice. If you compare this to what you get in India, then this may seem not as good but compared to what you get around here, this was decent. I would rate this at 8.3/10 .

White Rice & Pickled Chili
The portion of white rice provided was really huge, good to feed two moderate eaters and besides that,  pickled chili was also placed in the platter.

Vegetable
This vegetable was prepared well. The greens were still crispy and they were not stingy on the spices. Nicely done and I would rate this at 8.4/10 .

Tomato Curry
The Tomato curry was very nice and you actually can find chunks of tomato's in it. The taste was good and the portion decent. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Vegetable
This vegetable was just so so, not bad, but it didn't have the impact that it should have had. Slightly on the watery side, otherwise it was okay. I would rate this at 7.3/10 .

Kara Kulambu
The Kara Kulambu, though looking slightly oily, tasted good. Not up to the level that you would get at those Chettiar Mess's, nevertheless for a common Indian restaurant, it was good. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Rasam
Their Rasam, which was a plain and simple Rasam, tasted pretty good too. The spice's were sufficient and tasted good to drink after a good meal. I would rate this at 8/10 .

Mooru
The Mooru was very nice. I loved the fact that it was made with lots of spices and chilies added to it.Very good preparation. I would rate this at 8.9/10 .

Payasam
The Payasam was too diluted. Not good at all. I would only rate this at 4/10 . Overall, their Thali Set was definitely very satisfying.

Chicken Briyani Set @ RM 11.90
My brother wanted to try their Chicken Briyani. For the price of RM 11.90, it came with a huge platter of Briyani Rice with Chicken and one boiled egg, some Chicken Gravy, Cucumber Acar and one Papadam.

Huge Platter of Chicken Briyani

Very Lavish Portions of Chicken Chunks
The amount of Briyani rice provided was a lot. Besides that, the amount of meaty chicken chunks (not bones like some other restaurants) was also very lavish. The rice tasted absolutely delicious and the chicken was heavenly. It was only then that I had wished if I could still eat and order myself a plate of Mutton Briyani too. Having tasted a little of this, I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Cucumber Acar
The Cucumber Acar provided was also pretty good and most importantly of all, it was fresh and crispy. Not some material that was stored in the fridge. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Chicken Kulambu
Their Chicken Kulambu was also good. Slightly on the oily side, otherwise it tasted nice. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Black Pepper Mutton @ RM 10.90

Black Pepper Mutton @ RM 10.90
Besides the mains, we also added some side dishes and this Black Pepper Mutton is one of them. If you are expecting the usual mutton that you get at Indian restaurants, then you would not like this. For a change, imagine the Black Pepper Venison that is served at Chinese restaurants and imagine the meat being swapped for mutton, that is how this dish tasted and for me, it was good. The good thing with this dish is that it comes with loads of black pepper gravy and besides the mutton, there is a lot of sliced onions in the dish which goes perfectly well with the black pepper. The mutton too have been thinly sliced, quite similar to how venison would be sliced instead of the usual chunks. Definitely a fantastic preparation and I just loved this dish. I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Prawn 65 @ RM 10.90

Prawn 65 @ RM 10.90
Another fantastic dish. The prawns were coated in a spicy batter and deep fried to a golden orange colour. Each bite was heavenly and that is not an overstatement. I have never tasted Prawn 65 that is this good. Excellent! My only complaint is that the portion is perhaps a little small for the price, more always would have been better. He he. I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

The Bill
On the whole, it was a fantastic lunch and I do not regret coming here today. The Thali Set was good, the Briyani and other individual dishes that we tried today were simply fantastic. Definitely a place that I would return despite the distance. Just loved the food here.
