Jojo Little Kitchen @ Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya

It was a rainy night and I was supposed to be just relaxing at home until my brother turned up at my place inviting me to go out for dinner. Being a cold night, we wanted to have something simple and a bowl of hot noodles seemed like the perfect fit. I suggested a few places and my brother finally agreed for Pan Mee and that is how we arrived at this place in Kota Damansara. Jojo Little Kitchen has a number of outlets across the Klang Valley and I am not sure if they operate as a franchise now. Nevertheless, this particular outlet is located in The Strand, Kota Damansara and it is quite hidden from the main road. Despite it's location, the place is usually crowded during peak hours.

Jojo Little Kitchen in Kota Damansara

Interior of the Restaurant
Most of the Jojo Little Kitchen outlets are designed quite similarly and this was no exception. The place is definitely not too big but it can hold a decent crowd at any time. The floor space is divided into two areas, the air conditioned area as well as the open air area. Most of their staffs were foreigners and it was interesting to observe that so was the case with their kitchen helpers.

The Menu
Their menu was quite impressive with at least fifteen different variety of Pan Mee's. The type of noodles could also be chosen according to one's preference. Besides the noodles, you are also able to select add on items according to your taste like additional anchovies, additional noodles etc.

Chili Flakes to add on according to preference

Coca Cola @ RM 2.80
We both had Coca Cola and it was priced at RM 2.80 each. On every table, a variety of chili flakes were provided and this is for add on's to the Pan Mee dish to suit it to your taste.

Chili Pan Mee @ RM 7.00

All Mixed Up with Additional Chili Flakes
The Chili Pan Mee was quite satisfying. There was a good amount of noodles, minced pork, anchovies and a lovely runny egg and it was served quite hot. Obviously the Chili Flakes was insufficient for me and I added another three spoonfuls to bring it to my desired level of spiciness. I have tried Chili Flakes in a number of Pan Mee restaurants but here it was not too spicy and that was the reason I had to add more of it. Nevertheless, it was a decent bowl of Chili Pan Mee. I would rate this at 7.5/10 .

Fishball Noodles @ RM 6.30

All Mixed Up
The Fish ball Noodles was a non spicy dish. It came with more soy sauce, a decent amount of noodles, three Fish Balls, some anchovies and some vegetables. Nothing great to shout about but it was a decent dish to have. I would rate this dish at 7/10 .

Fish Ball Soup @ RM 5.50

Closer Look at the Fish Ball
Besides the noodles that we had earlier, we also ordered a bowl of the above Fish Ball Soup. It comes in choices of either Fish Ball or Pork Ball. Eight Fish Balls in a bowl of soup was priced at RM 5.50 which is quite acceptable. The Fish Balls were good, they were soft and fresh. The soup too was quite good and besides having the fish balls in it, it also came with some leafy vegetables which together, tasted quite nice. I would rate their Fish Balls at 8.7/10 .

Fish Cake @ RM 6.50

Closer Look At The Fish Cake
Their Fish Cakes were excellently prepared. They were extremely soft and were very fresh. The outer skin has a slight salty taste and the inner meat was extremely soft and delicious and together, they gelled very well. I would rate their Fish Cakes at 8.8/10 .

Overall, they definitely are serving some good bowls of Pan Mee which are decently priced and of an above average quality. I would not say that their food is mind blowing as I have tried better ones elsewhere, but it definitely is a good place to have a quick bowl of hot Pan Mee and their greatest advantage is the variety that they have which is something that you may not find elsewhere under one roof.

Restoran Mahbub @ Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya

Restaurant Mahbub is the restaurant that dominates the Indian Muslim food scene in Damansara Damai. Being located along the main access road in and out of Damansara Damai, they operate 24 hours a day and all throughout the day, they have a steady flow of customers right from breakfast to the wee hours of the night. Besides this particular outlet in Damansara Damai, they also have another outlet in Bangsar.

Interior of the Restaurant

Interior of the Restaurant
The outlet in Bangsar has been around since the 1970's and Mahbub is very famous for their Briyani Ayam Madu and Briyani Buhara. They also have a good array of dishes for lunch but this entry is focused on the other individual dishes and I would be specifically highlighting dishes which in my opinion is the best that they have to offer. Being located in a corner unit, they have the advantage of space and by evening, you would be able to see tables also arranged along the sides of the inner road. Typical of any other Indian Muslim restaurant, the service here is quite efficient and they would usually attend to you quite fast. The only setback here is that the cleanliness is just average.

Teh Tarik @ RM 1.40
Just like any other Indian Muslim restaurant, the tea here is quite good. It is decently sweetened and is slightly bold. I would rate their Teh Tarik at 8/10 .Do note that generally the prices here are slightly higher than other Indian Muslim restaurants, yet, due to the consistency of food quality and portion sizes, customers are willing to pay the slight premium.

The Tandoori Station

Tandoori Chicken @ RM 6.00
The Tandoori Chicken and Naan is prepared by a Pakistani guy from Pakistan. I was not in the mood for Naan today and hence only ordered the Chicken. You have the option to choose the piece and I choose the above thigh. Their set of Tandoori Chicken is served with Mint Chutney and some sliced cucumber.

Mint Chutney
The Mint Chutney was quite good. In most restaurants, they serve it watery but here, the preparation is quite concentrated. Definitely good stuff and I would rate it at 8.5/10 .

Tandoori Chicken
According to my brother, this is one of his favourite places to get his Tandoori fix but we have differing views here. I find this to be good, the meat was very tender and juicy and it is good to be eaten on it's own without the mint chutney but it was not the best that I have tried. The good thing is that it is grilled using a traditional charcoal oven and that had contributed to the meat being tender. My rating for this would be 8.5/10 .

Soup Station

Mutton Soup @ RM 6.00

Better Look at the Meat Cuts
They also do serve Mutton and Chicken Soup and I opted to try their Mutton Soup. This is the first time that I am trying their Mutton Soup despite having been at this restaurant for more than a hundred times at least. I must confess that it was the best Mutton Soup that I have had. It was made in a spicy and rich soup that was filled with spices and it was cooked with chunks of mutton along with their marrow that definitely added to the taste. Definitely a must try for Mutton Soup lovers! I would rate their soup at 9.8/10 .

2 Roti Canai in Fish Curry @ RM 2.20 (RM 1.10 each)

Thick and Aromatic Fish Curry
Another excellent preparation here is their Roti Canai and it is a must for me to have it with the Fish Curry. Both these items are excellently prepared here. I would rate their Roti Canai preparation at 9/10 and their Fish Curry at 9.5/10.

Besides these dishes, their rice and curry offering during lunch is also worth a try but it is slightly on the pricey side. Perhaps during my next visit, I would try some of their other items like Mee Goreng and Rojak and post my comments on those. It is definitely worth visiting this place for their Mutton Soup!

Monte's Restaurant & Wine Bar @ Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Monte's Restaurant & Wine Bar is a restaurant that needs no further introduction. Located on the Foyer Level of Bangsar Shopping Complex and known for their old school style of cooking, they have been serving customers for more than a decade now and in recent years, they have opened another outlet in Klang too. Being the New Year, we decided to have our family lunch at Monte's.

Numerous Awards Received Over The Years

Good Selection of Wine is Available

The Bar

Simple Yet Elegant Interior
As it was the New Years holiday, I had to make prior reservations. It was good that I did that as the restaurant was operating on full capacity when we arrived. Monte's is famous for so many reasons, it's food, environment which is conducive for business discussions, family dinners and dinner dates and most of all the reasonable prices. Over the years, they have consistently won numerous awards and to mention one in particular would be the top 10 Western Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. The service here too in excellent. Most of their waiters and waitresses are from the Philippines and they are extremely efficient in handling customers.

The Menu
Their Menu offers a good variety of Western Grilled items as well as some Italian dishes. Do note that this is a Pork Free restaurant but they do not have the Halal status as they serve alcohol on their menu. It took us some time to come to a decision as to what to have as most of the food listed seemed good. Every now and then, I was peeking at other peoples tables as the dishes arrived and that added on to the challenge of coming to a decision as it all seemed delicious. After some deliberation, we finally decided and called upon the waiter to take our orders.

Pepsi @ RM 6.00
We wanted to have Coca Cola but they only serve Pepsi here. Soft drinks are served in a tall glass and not by the can.

Monte's Coffee @ RM 12.00
Monte's Coffee was one of their specialty offerings here. It is a dark and bold brew of coffee served with whipped cream and adorned with some coffee beans along the corners. Definitely a good cup of coffee but it is only suitable to coffee lovers. Occasional coffee drinkers may find this to be too bold for them. I being a coffee lover would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Peppermint Tea By The Pot @ RM 8.00

Peppermint Tea By The Pot @ RM 8.00
The Peppermint Tea comes in a pot and is good for two cups. They use the off the shelf tea bags and it was quite decent. I would not rate this drink as all credit goes to the tea planters and the estates for their excellent work in delivering good tea in those little tea bags.

Bun and Butter
With any grilled or meaty dish, you get the above Bun and Butter as part of the set.Since it was the three of us dining here today, we got three of the above. The bun was fresh and served hot and the butter was of a good quality and salted, just the way I love it. I would rate this at 9/10.

Juicy Scallops @ RM 39.00

Better Look At The Scallops
We ordered the above for starters. They were a row of six juicy scallops, pan seared and served on a bed of sweet potato mash. The scallops were very fresh and juicy and the sweet potato mash went excellently well with it. The scallops were cooked to perfection and it was still tender and juicy with every bite. Excellent preparation! I would rate this at 9/10 .

Charbroiled Lamb @ RM 38.00

Charbroiled Lamb @ RM 38.00
The Charbroiled Lamb was grilled with traditional Herbs and Spices and served with mashed potato's and vegetables. It also had a thick black sauce at the base that tasted very delicious. The meat, since charbroiled, was very tender and with minimal fat. The meat portions too were quite lavish as they came with very little bones. Definitely a recommended dish! I would rate this at 9/10 .

Braised Lamb Shank @ RM 35.00

Braised Lamb Shank @ RM 35.00

Very Huge Portions

Served With Mashed Potato's and Vegetables
The Braised Lamb Shank definitely came in a extra large portion that is good to fill up a starving cave man. However, the meat was slightly overcooked and with that, the marrow had hardened and mostly dissolved. The trick is to have the meat cooked without having the marrow dissolve or harden and that would have been a perfect dish. The Brown Sauce that accompanied too was slightly bland. It was an above average dish and I could clearly say that Secret Recipe does a better job with this dish. I would rate it at 6.5/10 . On another note, the menu suggests that this dish is to be served with mashed potato's and stewed mushrooms but it was served with mashed potato's and vegetables. Not a big issue but it can be taken as misrepresentation by some.

Grilled Lamb @ RM 35.00

Juicy Meat Chunks
Among the three main dishes, the Grilled Lamb was definitely the best. It was a near perfection dish and was served with mint sauce, french fries and vegetables on the sides. The meat was tender and succulent, huge portions and perfectly cooked with just the right amount of fat strips attached. Every bite was definitely a gastronomical treat. I would rate this dish at 9.5/10 .

Creme Caramel @ RM 10.00

Creme Caramel @ RM 10.00
For desert, we ordered the above Cream Caramel which came with a good topping of sweet and sour mangoes. The Caramel itself was not too sweet and was just nice and went very well with the mangoes. Definitely a good desert. I would rate the above at 8.8/10 .

Overall, it was a very pleasant meal for us and all of us were thoroughly satisfied except for a few comments here and there which I have already mentioned above. Would we return, definitely! I am also very eager to try their Peppermint Lamb Chops which is supposed to be very good based on the available reviews.
