Stadt German Cuisine & Bistro @ Bandar Puteri, Puchong

I was in Bandar Puteri, Puchong today to meet up with my brother and since it was around 9 pm, we decided to head for dinner and that is when he suggested this place called Stadt German Cuisine & Bistro which is within the locality. He informed me that the food is pretty good and that this is one of his usual joints to have a decent western meal and good German beer. As he was very optimistic about the place, I decided to just tag along.

Stadt German Cuisine & Bistro in Bandar Puteri, Puchong
This outlet is located around the shop units that are located along Citibank, quite close to Giant Hypermarket. When we arrived here, it seemed that the place was buzzing.

Interior Of The Restaurant

Interior Of The Restaurant
This shop occupies two floors. The lower floor is for the diners and the first floor was purely a watering hole. On the Ground Floor, there were just a few tables that were occupied but the first floor was almost full house. It seems that the crowd in Puchong patronise this place as it is conveniently located near their homes. The other option would be for them to head into the city which again is pretty far and risky, specifically after a few beers.

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu
The Menu was quite comprehensive with a number of German dishes. Mostly, they were Pork based dishes, typical German food. The above photos is just a few pages from their extensive menu. However, I did find their staffs to be a little rude, one specifically to be precise. Though they were attentive, they did not display any basic level of courtesy. All of them were Filipinos and specifically one particular Filipino waitress who was attending to customers was particularly discourteous. The Filipino guys in the bar however were very friendly. I would just like to say to this girl that if you do not intend to attend to customers, there is always someone else who needs your job more than you do and if this attitude prolongs, I am sure there would be a lot of disgruntled customers. Even as we ordered the dishes, she did not advise us on the portion size and we ended up ordering five peoples meal for two and I completely blame this on her.

Hoegaarden 1/2 Pint @ RM 14.90
My brother ordered his favourite Hoegaarden  Beer and at RM 14.90 per half pint, it is surely cheap and this too at non Happy Hour rate. I did try a sip and the beer was ice cold and as fresh as fresh can be. Definitely worth it.

Coca Cola @ RM 3.90
As I had a long drive back, I decided to just stick to a Coca Cola.

Pork Knuckle With Glazed Honey @ RM 43.90

Close Up of the Pork Knuckle
This dish was really huge. It would be good for three people. I just wished that the waitress had advised me that this is a huge platter that would be sufficient for three. The dish however was excellent. The Pork Knuckle was excellently cooked to perfection. The honey had coated the dish well and it was heavenly. It reminded me of a dish that I had had in Germany some time ago. Please bear in mind when ordering that this would be good for at least three. Nevertheless, this was a great dish and was excellently prepared. I would rate this dish at 9.5/10 .

Lamb Boneless Meat @ RM 26.90
My brother ordered this dish and I did get to try this. I find the Lamb to be well done. In fact, it tasted more like Lamb Stew. My brother informed me that for this dish specifically, they steam the lamb until it breakdowns to almost like the stew and then it is garnished with the dressing and sauce. It was surely not the typical Lamb Chop as they have that as a separate dish and this was something unique. For those who love Lamb Stew or Corned Mutton, this would give a similar taste to it. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Spicy Sliced Sausage @ RM 14.90
This was another interesting dish that we had. Honestly, this deserves to be more of a side dish to accompany drinks. Although the name suggests that it is spicy, it was nowhere near spicy. In fact, I would find this to be absolutely not spicy and this is by my standards which may vary to others. Nevertheless, the taste was still nice. I would call this dish as Mushroom Sauce Sliced Sausages. From a taste perspective minus the spicy factor, it was a good dish. I would rate this at 6.8/10 .

On the whole, this is a decent place to have a good German dinner in Puchong. Our bill for the night came to RM 121.20 . This includes a Service charge of 10% and Government Tax of 6%. I just hope that the staffs pick up on their service levels and the rest would fall in place and they would find more customers coming in to dine as well.

Bar'licious @ Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

Bar'licious is a Halal restaurant cum bar which is located in Solaris Dutamas on Publika's side. It may be a little difficult to find this place as it is located on the first floor and the signs are pretty vague. Even the neon lights at the entrance is not always on. But if you look out for block D2 and follow the address below, it would not be a problem then.

Bar'licious at Solaris Dutamas
This is a concept restaurant run by some Iranians. Their main food sold here are Western, Iranian and a few Arabic dishes. I was told by some of my friends that the Western Cuisine here is pretty good and that is why we planned to head here this evening to try some of the dishes.

The Bar at Bar'licious

Interior of the restaurant

Nice plush seats

The Cutlery
The ambiance at this restaurant is nice. Beautifully decorated, it boasts of a blend of Western and Iranian design. By looking at the bar, they did have a decent collection of drinks and quite a number of beer promotions were running too. I was not in the mood for beers tonight and just passed the offer. The service again was very efficient. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by the owners and then handed the menu down to us. We finalised our orders and then just sat down enjoying the music playing in the background. Seems like a while ago, they used to have a live band in the house but no longer now. From the pigeon hole leading to the kitchen, I could see that the cooking was primarily done by a Bangladeshi and another Filipino lady. When we arrived here, it was just us and another table and as the time passed to around 2100, the crowd started coming in and by 2200, it was full house.

Ice Lemon Tea @ RM 5.00
Coca Cola @ RM 5.00

I ordered a glass of Ice Lemon Tea and Angie ordered a glass of Coca Cola. Both the drinks were priced at RM 5.00 which I feel is quite cheap for both this place and the kind of set up. The Ice Lemon Tea was nice and chilled suitably for this hot weather today.

Green Salad @ RM 12.00
One of the starters that we had ordered was the above Green Salad that was dressed in home made Caesar dressing. Though looking simple, the dish was nice. I would rate the Salad at 7/10 .

Mushroom Soup @ RM 12.00
The other starters that we had ordered was this Mushroom Soup. For sure, this is not the canned Campbell's Soup. It is home made and tasted decently good. The difference that I found in this soup was that the breadcrumbs were crushed and put into the soup which is unique. The mushroom was also cut in slightly larger bits and was nice. I would rate this soup at 8.3/10 .

Grilled BBQ Chicken Chop @ RM 20.00
This comes with 250g of Chicken Chop served with BBQ Sauce, Coleslaw and French Fries. The Chicken was grilled to perfection and the sauce was delicious. I must say that there was a clear Iranian influence in this dish as there were a number of Asian spices that I could taste. This dish is unique and to me it tasted very good, much better then some of the expensive western restaurants. This could also be due to the fact that I too am an Asian and prefer the blended taste than the pure European taste. Nevertheless, it is a highly recommended dish here. I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

New Zealand Lamb Chop @ RM 32.00
This dish comes with 250g lamb served with Black Pepper Sauce, Wedges and Coleslaw. Three excellently grilled lamb pieces were given and once again, it was marinated with some Asian spices. The Black Pepper Sauce was quite unique and had a slightly salty taste to it which blended well with the meat. Again another excellently prepared dish here. I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Iranian Style Watermelon Faloude @ RM 8.90
This was our desert and it was pretty much Watermelon on Ice cubes with a fancy name. The style of preparation gave the watermelon pieces continued chilling as we consumed it. Interesting desert.

Overall, this is a cool place to hangout with friends and also a great place to have dinner especially the western food. Please do note that they do charge a 10% Service Charge and 6% Government Tax on all their bills.  I just loved the dishes we had today as they were truly unique and stand out in terms of the preparation methods as a blend between east and west. A highly recommended place.

Korean House Restaurant @ Bukit Baru, Melaka

I was down in Malacca today for business and while looking for a place to have lunch, I came across this restaurant called Korean House.

Korean House in Malacca
This is literally a house whereby the ground floor has been converted into a restaurant and the upper floor is utilised as the house space by this Korean family. It is located right next to the main road, close to an intersection near the Melaka City Council along Jalan Datuk Palembang. Being a banglo property, there was ample parking space here. Please do note that this house is perched on a slope and can be difficult to sight but the signs are quite clear.

Interior of the restaurant

Interior of the restaurant

Interior of the restaurant
It was a pretty huge space for a restaurant and having converted the ground floor of their home into a restaurant definitely eliminates the element of monthly rental. Though simple in design, the place was extremely clean and I just loved the old Italian floor tiles. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the owner Mr. Albert Lee Won Tae.

The Cutlery

Menu
The reception I must say was very warm from both Albert and his wife. We took our place at the far end table and shortly they brought us the menu. Drinking water is on the house but then other drinks are chargeable. They also seemed to have a great collection of Korean wines. From the menu, it seems that the price is on the upside, even compared to that of Kuala Lumpur. But I guess since there may not be that many Korean Restaurants in Malacca, that seemed justifiable. I then placed the orders and we waited for the meal to arrive. I could literally hear the noise of the wok and the grill coming from the kitchen. That is good as it clearly indicates that the meals are fresh. Most of the vegetables are home grown too. There were quite a number of customers here at this time of the day. Besides, from the design on the table, it is clear that they have a number of customers who come here for the Korean Steamboat.

Our Lunch
After about half an hour, all the dishes came simultaneously. Basically it was just three dishes that we ordered from the menu and they came with a number of side dishes.

Dwaeji Jummulleok @ RM 36.00

Twelve Side Dishes

Twelve Side Dishes

Twelve Side Dishes
The above Daweji Jummulleok comes with a set of twelve side dishes. Being priced at RM 36.00, I find that it does come with a lot of items. It is typically Grilled Pork with a variety of side dishes which are mostly vegetables and Korean Kimchi. The Grilled Pork, I must say, was excellent. The meat was extremely soft, tender, chewy and delicious. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 . The other side dishes too were pretty good but unlike in Kuala Lumpur where mostly they are refillable, here it was limited to one serving only. Nevertheless, I would still rate it based on the taste at 8.8/10 .

Kim Chi Soup @ RM 23.00
Sorry that I only remembered to take the photo after consuming half of it. This dish was good for four bowls. This soup was really nice. Filled with various vegetables and a little pork meat, it was nicely spiced with a touch of sourness. However, this was not the best Kim Chi Soup that I have tried but surely stands out. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Vegetables, Garlic & Chillies
This is a standard dish in any Korean Restaurant. Here , it was on the house.

Kim Chi Jeon @ RM 28.00
The Kin Chi Jeon here was much spicier than the ones available at most other places. I must say that the size was huge and would be good for four. They do not give the dip sauce until I asked for it. Perhaps their style is to have it just like that. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Overall, this is a great place to have a good Korean meal in Melaka. Our bill for the day came to RM 111.10 including 10% Service charges and drinks. The price is not high bearing in mind the dish sizes. Initially when I was ordering, I felt that it was expensive as I was not able to gauge the dish sizes but as the dishes arrived, I could see why it was priced as such. What we ordered could have been sufficient for four pax. This place is also very suitable for business meetings and discussions as the environment is quiet and comfortable. Good Wifi connectivity is also provided for those who wish to work from here. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Nasi Kandar Fareed Line Clear @ Bukit Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh

Having started their business with a small stall in the middle of a parking lot, their business has grown over the years to the point that today they run a full fledged restaurant business. Restoran Nasi Kandar Fareed Line Clear is located in the Industrial Zone of SB Jaya, within close proximity to Bukit Rahman Putra. Their iconic original stall is still in business at that is located about 500 meters from this location. In fact if you are coming from Bukit Rahman Putra, you would pass their stall first before reaching this restaurant. Do not worry about the directions as once you are pretty close, there signs clearly direct you to both the stall and the restaurant.

Restoran Nasi Kandar Fareed Line Clear in Bukit Rahman Putra
Right opposite this restaurant, there is another restaurant called Nasi Kandar Fareed which signboard is quite similar to this but that restaurant has got nothing to do with this group. Perhaps they have named their restaurant such just to steal some of these guys success in attracting crowd. This restaurant is famous for their Nasi Kandar which is authentic to the Penang style. Having based in the middle of an industrial zone, most of their customers are the factory workers and of course, you have people like me who travel a distance is search of good food.

Indoor Seating Area

Indoor Seating Area

Outdoor Seating Area
This restaurant occupies a corner unit and their seating areas are segregated into two sections. This may sound strange as it even did to me when I heard it the first time. They actually charge different prices based on where you sit. If you sit outside, it is standard price and if you sit inside under the fan, they charge a slightly higher price. I have never seen this practiced anywhere else.

Teh O Ice @ RM 1.30
The moment I took my place, I was attended to by a waiter and I placed order for my drinks. I had the above Teh O Ais which was quite good. I would rate that drink at 8/10 . Then I went over to the food counter to check out their food for myself which has been spoken about in great lengths by those who have visited here.

The Food Counter

Food & Rice Counter
These guys definitely have a great collection of dishes. First thing that I would like to mention is their rice. Here as you can see from the above photograph, they have three different varieties of rice, white rice, Nasi Kandar which is yellowish in colour and Briyani Rice. I have not seen this Nasi Kandar i.e. the yellowish rice sold anywhere outside of the old shops in Penang. Even if you head to the famous yet new ones in Penang, they still only serve the white rice and briyani rice. The original Nasi Kandar has to be served with this yellow rice and it was a pleasant surprise that I found it here in Sungai Buloh after all these years. As for their curries, they had a unique offering similar to the authentic ones found in Penang. My favourite dish is the duck curry and that too was available here. Besides these, their crab curry and fish egg curry are also worth trying. I picked up my dishes along with that Nasi Kandar, got the bill for the meal and then head back to my table. As expected when the guy was summing up my bill, he had asked where I was seating and I knew exactly why.

My Meal @ RM 7.00
The above dish includes the Nasi Kandar i.e. yellowish rice, a piece of Duck Drumstick, Papadam, Long Beans and mix gravy. The meal was absolutely heavenly. Their rice, curries and the duck curry was made to perfection. Every bite was delicious and the duck was cooked to just the right level with the meat being tender and soft. I would rate the above dish at 10/10 and definitely worth the price of RM 7.00 .

Fried Chicken @ RM 3.50
I also then added on with a piece of Fried Chicken which cost me RM 3.50 per piece. Their pieces are pretty big and I do not find the price to be expensive. The chicken was well marinated and it was decent in taste. I would rate the above Fried Chicken at 7.5/10 .

The Endorsement From Jalan Jalan Cari Makan Team
My total meal cost me RM 11.80 . Overall, the place is worth the travel if you want to have a good, authentic and cheap Nasi Kandar meal without having to travel up to Penang. I have not found similar quality Nasi Kandar in Kuala Lumpur and this includes the shops along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Even there, they do not serve this yellow rice. This place is surely worth a visit.

Bavarian Bierhaus @ The Curve, Petaling Jaya

Bavarian Bierhaus is definitely a name that is familiar to all beer and pork lovers out there. This place is famous for those two things. Being located at The Curve, it definitely attracts a great crowd of both expatriates and office goers working around this area. It has been some time that I had come here, the last was perhaps two years ago. Recently I had come across this voucher from Groupon which seemed like a pretty good deal to me which I had then purchased.

Lovely indoor ambiance

The Interior of the restaurant

Waiting for our meals
The deal from Groupon was priced at RM 48.00 which included a huge Pork Platter that comes with an assortment of meat and soup. I purchased one of the vouchers and as many of you are familiar, I had to call in 4 days in advance to book my seats for the selected date. At first I was turned down for the date in mind as the booking was already full and I had to schedule it for the next week. With the booking done, we head there the following week. The good thing is that the timing is quite flexible and so we chose to come in only at 2 pm to avoid the usual traffic heading into The Curve. As you can see from the above photographs, the place has both indoor and outdoor seating spaces. For those who smoke, the outdoor seating space and the bar counter are the only options available but they are well spaced and covered from sunlight. The indoor space has a dark effect to it, perhaps that is how the Germans would love it. Coming back to the day, we walked in and was greeted by a waitress and then I handed her my Groupon Voucher and she counter checked with the bookings which were recorded in a book. I was surprised by the take up rate, there was at least 50 people that had booked in for that day. I had a chance to go through the rest of the days and there must have been at least a thousand such vouchers sold. Guess we were not alone. We were then ushered to our table and handed the menu for us to choose our drinks. Of course the drinks were not included in the voucher and it is an out of pocket expense. Nevertheless, to those who would like to try their German Beers, I was told that for Groupon customers, they offer Happy Hours price all day long but it is limited to around five or six beer variety.

The Menu

Bora Bora Brew @ RM 13.90
The above was my drink. Gosh I do not know what was inside but some kind of cranberry drink which had a striking taste of sourness to it. But it was nice and very refreshing. I think it was worth the price and I would rate this drink at 9/10 .

Pineapple Sunshine @ RM 13.90
Angie ordered the above drink. It was typically a Pineapple based drink with a number of other ingredients added into it. I never really took note of the ingredients in the menu card but it was a great drink. Between this and the previous, I would prefer the previous. However, I would still rate this drink at 8.8/10 .

Pumpkin Soup...part of the Groupon Deal
The service here was very efficient. Though there were only two people manning the entire floor space and one another at the drinks bar, they were very efficient. I received my drinks promptly and shortly thereafter we got our soup. It was hot, fresh and delicious. I must say it was surely made from fresh ingredients as opposed to the canned ones. I would rate this Pumpkin Soup at 9.2/10 .

Pork Platter @ RM 48.00

Sauce Topping For The Mashed Potato
Although from the photograph the above Pork Platter may seem small, it was really huge and was a little too much for the two of us. It really took us a while to finish it, but seriously was a heavenly Pork galore. It contained 150g of Bavarian BBQ Pork Sausage, 50g Cheese Bratwurst (Pork Sausage with Cheese) , 50g Tocino Sausage (Pork Sausage with Spices) , 125g Pork Belly, 3 x 70g Streaky Bacon (Grilled Pork Bacon), 175g Pork Schnitzel (Boneless Pork Coated in Flour, Mashed Eggs & Bread Crumbs), 175g Grilled Pork Chop, 50g Sauerkraut (Fermented Cabbage) and 75g Mashed Potatoes. I must say that every one of those items were excellently prepared and these guys surely take their pork seriously. I would rate the above platter at 10/10 . Although it was just too much protein to consume at one sitting, but hey it does no harm to have all those cholesterol once in a while. For a value price of RM 48.00 for the above dish and the soup, it is definitely a good buy.

The total meal today cost us RM 80.25 including the drinks and it was worth every dime spent. I would surely look out for more deals coming this way from this particular restaurant. Thank you Groupon for this excellent meal we had. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
