Restoran Shankarees Curry House @ Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur

Initially today we had wanted to go over to Uma Ranis which is located along Jalan Ipoh but as the traffic was quite bad in the area, I decided to turn in to Jalan Kasipillay which is located at the third mile along Jalan Ipoh. I know that there are quite a number of eateries here and a number of new Banana Leaf places too which have mushroomed in recent months. Once I turned in, I sighted this Shankarees Curry House on my left. Since we have never tried this place before, we wanted to give the place a try.

Shankarees Curry House at Jalan Kasipillay

Quiet At This Hour
Parking could be a problem here but we were fortunate to get a bay right in front of this restaurant. We were here around 3 pm and the place was quite empty then. I was just hoping that there would be some food available as we were already quite hungry.

Vegetarian Dishes

Vegetarian Dishes

Sothi
Just as I expected, most of the curries were already sold out but fortunately, there was still some and we could manage with just that. This was a good sign. Well, if the food was not good here, then there would be quite a bit of left over and since it was the reverse, then food shall surely be quite good.

Non Vegetarian Dishes

Non Vegetarian Dishes
Even most of the non vegetarian dishes were already sold out but as I mentioned earlier, we decided to just make do with whatever that was left. We then selected our food items and then returned back to our table. At this restaurant, they have both Par Boil Rice and the usual White Rice. I did not see any sign of Banana Leaf meals here. Perhaps they only go by plates.

My Mom's Meal @ RM 5.50

My Dad's Meal @ RM 5.50

My Meal @ RM 7.00
Once we returned to our table, the owner then came up and started calculating the prices. To my surprise, both my parent's meal were priced at RM 5.50 each. They only had rice with two vegetables and my meal which consisted of Rice and Mutton was priced at RM 7.00 . Prices here are definitely on the high side. Did not expect such pricing at this simple restaurant. There is not much that we could do now but to just enjoy the meal. I shall talk about the individual dishes below.

Long Beans Perattal
Their Long Beans Perattal was quite standard, similar to other Tamil restaurants out there. I would rate this at 7/10 .

Bean Sprouts
Their Bean Sprouts however tasted quite good. Minimal oil was used in the preparation and it tasted delicious. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Vegetarian Kulambu
Their Vegetarian Kulambu was awesome. It was very good! Everything was perfect and I would have enjoyed my meal even if everything else was sold out. Just plain rice and this gravy would have been a satisfying meal for me. I would rate this at 9.8/10 . Highly recommended!

Sothi
Their Sothi too was very good. It was made without being stingy with the ingredients. I loved this too and would rate this at 9.7/10 . Highly recommended!

Mutton Perattal
Their Mutton Perattal came with a combination of meat and bones. The gravy was simply delicious and the dish was fantastic. Another excellent dish here and this too is highly recommended! I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Papadam
For three pax, they only provided us with three Papadams and when we asked for more, the waiter provided them without a fuss. Maybe there was quite a lot of wastage happening and so they try to control it even at the service level. The Papadams were fresh and not the foldable type. Good stuff!

Rasam

Rasam
They initially provided us with only one tumbler of Rasam, perhaps they thought that we were going to add it to the rice. But then, I asked for another two tumblers of Rasam and told them that we usually drink it, to which the waiter obliged. Their Rasam was thick, filled with spices and it was simply a treat! Excellent stuff and I would rate this at 9.8/10 . Must try their Rasam if you happen to be here.

Iced Water On The House
All of us had a glass of Iced Water each and it was provided complimentary. This is a good practice that I would applaud when many out there actually charge for them.

Us Having Lunch

The Bill For The Day
In summary, I would definitely say that the food here is fantastic despite the fact that their prices are on the high side. Would I return? Oh yes I will but would not be a place that I would patronise daily, simply because of the prices. But when I feel like having some good Indian food, then this place would definitely come to my mind. Food wise, the place is definitely highly recommended!

Azz Corner Tomyam @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Azz Corner Tomyam is one of the recent additions to the Tom Yam stalls scene in Tanjung Malim, Perak. Previously, this very stall was known as Masha Beriani Bistro and they used to sell Beriani, as the name suggests during the day. I was informed by a friend who disposed the business that now, he rents this space to this stall which operates from 4 pm to 2 am daily.

Azz Corner Tomyam in Tanjung Malim

The Stall Right Next To MSV Auto

Simple Yet Clean
This stall is located in Kg, Berop, right beside MSV Auto. For those who are familiar with Tanjung Malim, finding this place is not a problem. For those who are not, just ask anyone where Kg. Berop is and you would be guided to this place. During the day, the stall is closed. Being a fan of Tomyam myself, I decided to give the place a try tonight. Since I was alone, there is a limit as to what I could try out but I am definitely hoping for a good meal. When I arrived here, it was almost 11 pm and yet there were quite a number of customers. In fact, at the time that I was there, the flow of customers were good. I am not saying that they were house full but at any point in time, there were at least five tables that were occupied with customers having their meal. Hardly you see anyone sitting here with just a drink and chatting for hours. All their customers were serious diners.

Teh O Ice
Orders were taken by a Malay guy and the moment the orders were handed over to the kitchen, a lady, whom I believe is the boss, get's on with the cooking. Service was quite prompt. The only setback would be that they do not have a menu card here and hence, the ordering were done by just mentioning the dishes that you would like to have. If they can do it, they would serve it. The other setback of not having a menu is that I was not able to gauge the prices of the individual items but I shall nevertheless mention the total meal cost towards the end of this entry. I ordered the above Teh O Ice and it was sent over almost instantaneously. The Teh O Ice was quite nice, slightly sweet but a bearable sweetness. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

White Rice

Kailan Ikan Masin

Kailan Ikan Masin
Unlike other Tomyam places which send all the items at one time, here they served me as and when the dishes were ready. The White Rice and the above Kailan Ikan Masin were sent first. This is one of my favourite dishes. The portion here was much larger than other Tomyam places that I have seen. The taste of the above dish was simply fantastic. Salted Fish was not used sparingly and the dish tasted very good. I would rate this at 9.4/10 . A wonderful preparation.

Ayam Masak Merah

Ayam Masak Merah
The preparation of this Ayam Masak Merah was slightly oily but it tasted delicious. It seems that all the dishes here were on the spicy side and I absolutely loved it. The portion was once again larger than the others out there. A tasty preparation that deserves a rating of 9.5/10 .

Tomyam Soup

Tomyam Soup

Tomyam Soup
The Tomyam Soup was also served in a relatively large bowl which would have been good for two. The preparation was super spicy, which even got me coughing a couple of times but it was awesome. Super good and this is highly recommended here. I would rate this at 9.9/10 .

My meal today costed me RM 18.00 . Slightly on the high side but not to forget that the portion was larger than usual and the ingredients used were lavish thus churning out delicious dishes. All the three dishes that I tried today were very good and now, this stall would become my benchmark in gauging other Tomyam restaurants in town. I have tried numerous Tomyam places in Tanjung Malim and by far, this is the best. You get an absolutely similar taste to Restoran Vichuda that is famous in Damansara Utama. Going forward, this would definitely be my favourite Tomyam joint in town. A taste to remember!

Neighbourhood Food Court @ Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya

Neighbourhood Food Court in Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara needs no introduction as it has been around for many years now. This is one of those food courts that is open 24 hours daily. If you come into Dataran Sunway, this is located right in the center and is attached to the multi storey car park.

Neighbourhood Food Court in Kota Damansara

Well Lit Up

Quite  A Number Of Stalls

A Variety Of  Food Options

Mostly Crowded
This is not the first time that we are patronising this place but of late, there has been a revamp and many stalls are now being run by the anchor tenant with just a handful of stalls which have been sub let to other operators. After the revamp, this would be our first trip here. Since the renovation had taken place recently, we decided to walk around and scout the place. After having made our individual rounds, we returned to the table after placing our individual orders at the preferred food stalls.

Penang Prawn Mee Stall

Selective Dishes Offered Here

Penang Prawn Mee @ RM 6.00

Penang Prawn Mee @ RM 6.00

Chili Paste
My Dad is a fan of Prawn Mee and whenever he sights a stall selling this, he would definitely go for it. The previous operator was very famous for his Prawn Mee and had quite a number of newspaper write ups dedicated to him. These guys however, are part of the anchor tenant and he has employed foreign labour to man the stall. We still went for the Prawn Mee and it was priced at RM 6.00 . Slightly pricey for this place but still an acceptable level of pricing. The Prawn Mee was nice, in fact it was quite good. It was served along with the Chili Paste and the noodles came in a delicious Prawn Soup.A satisfying bowl of Prawn Mee it was and I shall rate this at 8/10 .

Fried Oyster Stall

Their Offerings

Prices Of Dishes

Fried Oyster Omelette @ RM 10.00

Fried Oyster Omelette @ RM 10.00
This Oyster Omelette Stall was at the other end and this was my brother's dinner. The Fried Oyster Omelette was nice, mildly spiced and lightly salted, it was a good dish. The price too commensurated the portion. I would rate this at 8.5/10 . Quite nice I would say.

Popiah Stall

A Variety Of Popiah's

A Variety Of Popiah's

Wet Popiah @ RM 4.50

Wet Popiah @ RM 4.50
The Popiah Stall is located just beside the Fried Oyster Stall. She had a variety of different Popiah types but I went for the Wet Popiah as it is favoured by all of us. This dish was meant to be shared by all. It was priced at RM 4.50 for a set of two, just like the above photograph. Although the price was reasonable, the Popiah itself was horrible. Firstly, it was loosely wrapped and once you tried to lift it, it just breaks. The ingredients used too were not up to the mark and the chili sauce was simply insufficient. Not a recommended Popiah and I would rate this at 3/10 .

Curry Mee Stall

Curry Mee & Wan Ton Mee

Curry Mee @ RM 6.00

Curry Mee @ RM 6.00

Chili Paste
As for my dinner, I ordered the Curry Mee which is from the Wan Ton Mee stall that is located right beside the Prawn Mee Stall. A bowl of noodles were priced at RM 6.00 . When it arrived, I realised that it was not the usual Curry Mee but the Curry Chicken Mee. The preparation was very nice and I loved the thick curry that was provided. There were lavish amounts of Tofu and Curried Chicken provided in the dish. Taste was good and I would rate this at 9/10 .

In summary, the place has definitely improved after the renovations. All the dishes that we ordered today were nice, except for the Popiah which was sub standard. Prices are slightly high, otherwise a great place to come all day long.
