Taiping Ho Chiak @ SS2, Petaling Jaya

Restoran Taiping Ho Chiak is a family run restaurant serving home cooked food and is located on the Chow Yang side of SS2. Having originated from Taiping, this restaurant has been around for a number of years now and they specialise in Nyonya Cuisine with a Chinese touch to it. It is run by a couple and they have had numerous write ups in the local newspapers and magazines highlighting the good food that is being served here at this restaurant.

My Dad Checking Out The Menu

Us At The Restaurant
This restaurant has two seating areas, the inside area which is air conditioned and there are also a number of tables placed at the entrance for smokers and those who prefer just fans. I had already called earlier today and reserved a table for us and that made things much smoother. It is best to reserve a table especially if it is a weekend as they do get quite busy for dinner. The decoration at this restaurant is quite classic and that gives it a perfect Peranakan look. The are also numerous newspaper write ups on this restaurant that are framed on the walls.

The Menu
The above are just a few pages from their menu. I must commend them for being very attentive to customers needs and despite being busy and a little shorthanded tonight, they still tried their best to attend to their customers very quickly. The menu was handed to us immediately after us taking our seats and within a few minutes, when I indicated that we were ready to order, they attended to us almost immediately. The lady boss was also proactive during the ordering process and she was honest and did cut me off when she felt that the number of dishes ordered were a little too much and that is a rare quality which deserved commendation.

Pie Tee @ RM 6.00

The Filling for the Pie Tee
The first starters that we had ordered was the above Pie Tee. Priced at RM 6.00, it comes with 6 cones and the filling is served separately and you have the flexibility to fix it according to your taste. Fixing this is not rocket science and it was rather easy for us. Just fill the cones with the preferred amount of filling and add the chili according to your taste and it's ready to be eaten. I would say that it was quite well done and we did enjoy this. I would rate this dish at 8/10 .

Roti Babi @ RM 9.00

Closer Look At The Bread
Roti Babi is one of my all time favourites. It is hard to find a well prepared one and the one served here tonight was very satisfying to my fussy taste buds. The bread was done to just the right level and the filling of the Pork meat was lavish and had a great flavour to it. I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .

Sambal Udang Petai @ RM 20.00
With the starters done, now time to indulge in the main dishes. We went with White Rice and it was priced at RM 1.50 per large bowl. For the four of us, three bowls were more than sufficient. Coming to the above Sambal Udang Petai, I must confess that it came with loads of both Petai and Prawns and was served in a slightly spicy gravy. It definitely had an authentic taste to it and was just as I had expected it to be. The Petai's were still crunchy and the Prawns were quite fresh and juicy. Overall a delicious dish. I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Lap Cheong Omelette  @ RM 16.00
The eggs came with loads of Lap Cheong and together they tasted really good. Nevertheless, the price of RM 16.00 for this egg dish is slightly high. If not for the high price, the dish was good. I would rate this egg dish at 7/10 .

Ayam Pongteh @ RM 20.00
Their Ayam Pongteh was quite decent but definitely not anywhere near the best ones that I have tried. It lacked the usual flavours and the broth was slightly diluted. I usually would have cleaned this dish dry as I love Ayam Pongteh but tonight there were leftovers. I would rate this dish at 6.3/10 .

Cincalok Pork @ RM 16.00
This dish was very well prepared. There was a good amount of Cincalok flavour that emanated from the dish and the Pork was sliced very thinly to allow the meat to absorb good amounts of the sauces. Definitely a very well prepared dish. I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Ice Cream on the house
Once dinner was done, we were served the above Ice Cream complementary. Overall, this place serves some good dishes but it is still needs improvement on some of it's other dishes. It still does not rank on my top ten Nyonya restaurants but if you are looking for a place close by to have a nice Peranakan meal, then this could be a good option. Nevertheless, their service level is definitely very good and I am sure that they usually build good relationships with their customers. Thumbs up to them for their excellent customer service.
