Ayam Golek Solo @ Medan, Indonesia

Ayam Golek Solo was previously known as Ayam Golek Semarang and it was just recently that they had done this rebranding exercise. Other than that, this is a restaurant that is sought after by the locals in Medan, Indonesia for this special delicacy.

The Restaurant Along The Ring Road

Their Menu
This restaurant specialises in Ayam Golek (Roasted Chicken) and Ayam Percik and their menu is limited to just a handful of items. It is good that they have stuck to their specialty instead of having so many dishes but none stand out. This way, most people would come looking for them solely for those two items mentioned above. Price wise, it is pretty much local pricing. The restaurant itself is quite basic unlike those high end Indonesian restaurants but it was reasonably clean and comfortable. All cooking and grilling is done outside thus keeping the heat away from the seating area. Each dish is made to order and therefore, do expect some minimal waiting time. But again, you're assured to be served freshly prepared food.

Iced Tea @ IDR 6,000

Ayam Percik Set @ IDR 15,000
Their Iced Tea was priced at IDR 6,000 which is approximately RM 1.60 . Somehow, their Iced Tea there tastes very different. I do get some Pandan leaves taste in the drink. Probably they add that to the tea and it's truly something. I would rate their drink at 9/10. The Ayam Percik set is priced at IDR 15,000 which is approximately RM 4.00 . This comes with a quarter chicken, some chili in Sweet Soy Sauce and Sambal Merah.

White Rice @ IDR 5,000

Sambal Merah

Chili in Sweet Soy Sauce
A plate of White Rice was priced at IDR 5,000 which was somewhere around RM 1.30 . Their Sambal Merah was just awesome. I truly love the sambal's that you get in Indonesia as it's really hot and I don't mind having just the sambal, either Sambal Merah or Sambal Hijau with plain rice. It's just so delicious and as for this preparation, I would rate their Sambal at 9/10. Similarly the Chili in Sweet Soy Sauce was good too, but nowhere close to the Sambal. I would rate this at 8/10.

Ayam Percik

Fried Tempe @ IDR 10,000
The Ayam Percik was just awesome. Lovely marination and it was so different to the ones that you get in Malaysia. The spices were much more and the flavours were just heavenly. I would rate this at 9/10. Their Fried Tempe was so fresh. It was such a simple preparation but it tasted so good. 10/10 would be my rating for this and it was merely priced at IDR 10,000 which is equivalent to RM 2.70 .

If you're in search of some good local food while in Medan, Indonesia, I would recommend visiting this restaurant. Previously, they were known as Ayam Golek Semarang and it is just recently that they had rebranded and now call themselves Ayam Golek Solo. Excellent Ayam Golek and Ayam Percik and the prices are very reasonable.
