Meat Point @ Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur

Restaurant Meat Point is a restaurant serving good Western cuisine located in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. I have heard a lot of great reviews about this place from friends. It is owned and run by two Malay gentlemen, not sure if they are brothers and was told that their Steaks and Chops are very good. It is also quite similar to Las Vacas that you get to choose your meat cuts and pay only for the meat cuts and then it is cooked for you according to the preparation of your choice.

This restaurant is located on the old side of TTDI. It is along the same row as Public Bank and CIMB. The restaurant has two seating areas which is divided by a glass panel. The outdoor area is for smokers and  the indoor area is air conditioned. When we were here today, it seemed that there were quite a number of tables that were celebrating birthday parties here. Sometimes, due to the lack of staffs, the waiting can be quite long to be attended to and for the food to be delivered but I think it is worth the wait especially if the food is really good.

Ongoing Drinks Promotions
As you can see, their menu is quite elaborate in its offerings. We just walked in and took our table and then the waitress attended to us by passing the menu. We were then told to walk over to the meat station to choose our meat cuts and then pass it back to her.

My Pick For Tonight
Initially I wanted to try Lamb but they ran out of stock and as I do not eat beef, I settled in for a Salmon. I picked up my meat of choice and handed over to the waitress. As for Angie, it was quite simple as she settled for Grilled Chicken and there was no selection of meat required.

Coca Cola @ RM 6.00
We both went for a glass of Coke which was charged at RM 6.00 each. I must say that it took them a while to send the drinks but I just can't blame them, they were literally full house today and operated with limited staff.

Bun & Butter
Since I ordered the Salmon, I got a set of Bun and Butter as the starters. I guess this is only extended to those that choose the meat cuts and is thus limited to Fish, Lamb and Steak dishes. Nevertheless, it is also available as an Ala Carte item in the menu. I would say that the bun was served hot and the butter was not frozen and ready to be consumed. This is good because I have had experiences at some restaurants that give you frozen butter that you have to wait a while for it to melt before being able to consume. I would rate this bun at 9/10 .

Jumbo Lamb Sausage @ RM 7.90
This was another Ala Carte item that we had ordered. I must say that these sausages were heavenly. It was very well done and the sausages themselves were of high quality lamb. I wound strongly recommend this dish . I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Grilled Chicken @ RM 27.90

Grilled Chicken @ RM 27.90
Angie ordered the above Grilled Chicken. I must confess it did take a while of waiting before we got this dish but it was worth the wait. I tried the Chicken and it was perfectly done. The tender meat came with perfect marination and just grilled to the right level. This was accompanied by some homemade mashed potatoes and salad. An excellent preparation. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Salmon Fillet Steak @ RM 39.00
Finally I got my meal too. Just look at that Salmon, how juicy and well done it is. This was perfectly done. With every single bite, I was able to taste the juiciness of the meat and the wonderful lemon herb sauce. The fish was excellent. One of the best Salmon Steaks that I have ever tried. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Coffee On The House
Our total bill for the day came to RM 95.80 which I feel is reasonable bearing in mind the quality of food and the excellent taste. Towards the end of our meal, the owner came up to us and apologized for having kept us to wait for our meals a little longer than usual. He then offered us free top ups for the Coca Cola and also a Coffee on the house. That was a wonderful gesture from him I would say. It is great that he is very customer centric and if he goes on like this, I am sure his business would be even more successful. Honestly, even if he did not come up to us and offer this wonderful gesture, I would still come back here for the great food. This is surely a place that I would recommend.

  2. TL;DR – Meat Point TTDI ruin your meat with a ‘Secret (read Soy) Sauce’ - 2/10
I was utterly disappointed with my meal at Meat Point TTDI last night, and I’ll tell you why.
I relish the opportunity to choose my own cut of meat if it arises, and this is what attracted me to Meat Point TTDI in the first place. What I do not appreciate is when a RM 130+ eye fillet is completely ruined from the diner’s perspective, especially when the situation could have been easily avoided.
After selecting a nice cut and ordering, my wife and I waited for our food. When the meals arrived, I immediately tasted that the steak had been soaked in a kind of soy-based marinade. Not a subtle or remotely original flavor profile and completely unnecessary for a quality piece of beef cooked properly. In my case, it was absolutely unwelcome and spoiled the meal. My wife ordered lamb chops, and they were also served with the same marinade. Although not flavored as strongly, and she initially enjoyed the flavor, it became too much by the end of the meal and detracted from her enjoyment. I was unable to eat more than 1/3 of my steak due to the overpowering flavor. Ultimately, both meals tasted just like one another, which in my opinion, is not the point of eating good quality meat at all.
Meat Point TTDI presents themselves as a western-style steakhouse. The sides are typical of western-style cuisine i.e. fries, sautéed veg w garlic, mashed potato (you know, white people food) etc. Where then, does the strongly Asian-flavored ‘Secret Sauce’ fit in? And how does it mix with a Mushroom Gravy? The answer to both questions is “It doesn’t”.
The only secret about the sauce, is that it is applied in secret and without your consent.
Here lies the crux of my discontent, nowhere at all on the menu is this blatantly polarizing fact printed and absolutely no advice is offered from the server. Meat Point is actually proud of the ‘Secret Sauce’ that masks the natural flavor of all the meat they serve.
When I visit a steakhouse, I expect that a piece of beef will be cooked on a very hot grill, with nothing more than a bit of salt, and maybe some pepper, to season. The best steakhouses possess grills so well-seasoned by the thousands of steaks cooked there over time, they impart a light flavor into the crust of the steak.
Did I mention the crust of a Meat Point steak? There is no crust to their steak, because it’s soaked in some overpowering soy concoction.
If I wanted beef marinated with soy, I’d ask for it, or better yet visit a restaurant where I’m expecting it. If you’re a fancy steak restaurant planning to soak my RM130 piece of beef in soy sauce, you damn well tell me first.
The dozen or so frozen chips, single meagre portion of powdered ‘mushroom gravy’ to share between two and olives suspiciously absent from the salad (without any substitution or explanation) clinched the deal for me. All in, RM250 for a spectacularly underwhelming and frustrating meal.
I really wanted the opportunity to relay my concerns to the Owner and Manager, in private, without needing to share this negative experience on an open forum, but I was told the owner is currently in Japan (indefinitely?) and the Manager is at Tesco (because 8pm is the ideal time for a restaurant manager to go grocery shopping, right?)
I left my phone number with the server and she assured me the Manager would call upon returning from Tesco, which I thought would be last night(4/8/15), but I haven’t heard anything as yet and don’t expect I will.
I’d consider purchasing meat to cook for myself in future, maybe, but I’ll NEVER make the mistake of asking you to prepare it again!

    1. Hi Tim....that's truly sad. Devastating experience it had been for you. I am fairly certain that should the owner had been around, this would have been immediately addressed. Just shows the slack on the Manager's part for failing to 'manage' well. Thanks for sharing this here. Would indeed reach many.
