Having spent the last few days in Malacca exploring the local food scene, this evening decided to head out for dinner with one of my cousins that is based in Malacca. He fetched me at the hotel and then off we were to Melaka Raya to a restaurant that has been around for quite a number of years called Restaurant Keng-Dom.

Interior of the restaurant |
This restaurant seems to be very popular among the locals here. They occupy three shop lots and have a touch of class to their interior design, although it was clear that it has been some time since they did any refurbishments. All the tables were set and ready for customers. Most of the waiters were foreigners and once we took our table, the captain who is a local Chinese gentleman, approached us to take the orders. It was fairly straightforward just like any other Chinese restaurant. From my observation, this place seems quite famous for their steamboat too. But we were in the mood for Rice and dishes and we went for those. While waiting for the dishes to arrive, we were served with some fried vegetable crackers and peanuts which is common with any such Chinese restaurant of this scale and size.

Sauteed Kailan |
The above Sauteed Kailan was pretty good. They were fresh and were flavoured well. What I like most about this dish is the crisp taste of the Kailan even after being cooked. The vegetable tasted sweet and the flavouring set in well. Overall a good dish and I would rate this 8.5/10 .
Stir Fried Vegetable |
This dish was just so so. The vegetable was not as fresh as it should be, in fact it was old but the preparation was decent. That being said, although it was prepared well, I would still not give it a good rating as I would definitely not accept old vegetables. I would only rate this at 5/5 .
Honey Chicken |
This Honey Chicken was really nice. The chicken chunks were about the right size, fried well and the honey coating was just nice at the right level of sweetness. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and I would rate it at 9/10 .
Sizzling Tofu |
The Sizzling Tofu was another good dish here. It had a thick layer of egg at the base just like it is commonly found in the northern and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia. The Tofu itself was oblong and not the round Japanese Tofu which would be the common preparation in the central region. For a change, this was nice and there were also shredded chicken meat in the dish. I would rate this dish at 8.5/10 .
Steamed Fish |
This was by far the best dish here tonight. This was steamed with sliced ginger in soy sauce. The fish was steamed so well and the juices have seeped in well into the fish. Definitely not the best that I have tried, but it was good and deserves it's credit. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .
Overall, I find this place to be quite okay. Their food may not be the greatest of Chinese food around but it was still nice. Unlike my previous entries where I mentioned the individual dish price, I am not able to provide it here today as the bill was paid for by my cousin. The total however including drinks came to RM 106.00 which is neither cheap nor very expensive. Definitely not a bad choice when you are in this part of town.
