Bandar Baru Selayang is an unfamiliar territory to me. This morning, I had to ferry my parents over to meet some friends and by the time they were done, it was already 2.00 pm and it was just nice for us to have our lunch. I was driving around in circles near the Stadium and finally located this Tamil restaurant called Restoran BBS which was on Jalan 2/16 .

Air Conditioned Dining Hall |
Parking is a mega hassle here and please do ensure that you buy those parking tickets from any of the sundry shops there as the parking attendants from Majlis Perbandaran Selayang are quite actively walking around issuing summons. Somehow, I managed to get a parking a few doors away. This restaurant occupies two shop lots and one of them had been converted into an air-conditioned dining hall. They had clearly segregated vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes into two separate counters and this was convenient as my father was a vegetarian for the day. They do not serve Banana Leaf Meals here and it is basically the common food on plates where you go up to the counter and select your curries. Service was very efficient and the staffs were running around attending to customers, probably because the owner was keeping an eye on them. Not sure if it is the same if he isn't around. Anyhow, we definitely enjoyed speedy service this afternoon.

Vegetarian Meal @ RM 3.50 |
All our meals were vegetarian dishes with just an exception of an Egg Sambal which I shall be talking about more below. All of us had rice with our choice of two vegetables and some curry and this was priced at RM 3.50 per pax. Very reasonable price for Kuala Lumpur. When most places charge RM 5.00 these days, I was surprised to see that they only charged us RM 3.50 per pax. Canned drinks were priced at RM 2.00 each and this is once again the going rate in town and of course, we do get some places that charge even more for this. I shall comment about each of those curries below.

Venthaya Kulambu |
Their Venthaya Kulambu was good. As you can see, it had just the right ingredients in it to boost the taste. The gravy was not diluted and this is clearly visible through it's colour. Taste wise, it was good too. Slightly spicy and mildly salty, just the way that it should be. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .
|
Mocha Kottai Curry with Anchovies |
Another authentic Tamil curry that's not commonly available. What I loved most about this gravy was the amount of ingredients that had been added into it. It was just a treat with loads of Mocha Kottai, Brinjals, Potatoes and Anchovies. Spicy and excellent! Oh I just was in love with this and I would rate this at 9.7/10 . Fantastic is the word! For those non Tamil speakers, Mocha Kottai is called Field Beans or Hyacinth Beans in English.
|
Fried Brinjals With Black Pepper |
This was once again so good. Thinly sliced brinjals, coated with spices & chili powder and dipped into ground Black Pepper were deep fried to a golden brown crisp. It was so good to even go on it's own. Yummy! I would rate this at 9.5/10 .
|
Carrots with Grated Coconut |
Sliced carrots were stir fried with grated coconut and other spices. Due to the natural taste of both key ingredients, the dish was on the sweet side of taste. The carrots were also not overcooked and still crunchy. Taste wise, I would rate this at 8/10 .
|
White Radish cooked with Dhall and spices |
Some call this White Radish and some Daikon Radish. In Tamil, it's called Mullangi. This had been prepared with some carrots, dhall and spices. A non spicy dish that would complement the gravy perfectly. Loved their preparation and I would rate this at 9.5/10 . It was just so creamy and tasty. I am sure that they might have added some ghee too to give it such a taste. Lovely!

Egg Sambal @ RM 1.00 |
We also had an Egg Sambal and this was served separately in a small plate. The Sambal was really spicy and it was thick and dry. A perfect preparation and a true winner. Absolutely loved it and I would rate this at 9.7/10 .
|
Papadam |
Papadam were provided complimentary with the meals and the quantity that you see above is what was provided for each person. They were definitely not stingy and calculative with these unlike some restaurants which charge customers for anything more than two Papadam's each. Ask for top up's and they willingly provided them. The Papadam's were fresh too and not those foldable types.
|
Rasam |
Rasam was another complimentary item provided to all customers having rice meals and these were served in separate tumblers like the above. They were thick and concentrated. Rich with spices too and definitely on the spicy side. It was so good that I had asked for a refill and they obliged without any additional charges. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Parents Having Lunch |
Overall, I must confess that this place does serve some excellent food. It may seem like a no frills, very ordinary looking restaurant but that does not prohibit them from serving some excellent food. Everything tasted good and not a single thing to complain about. Service was amazing and the prices, I felt were very reasonable, if not cheap. I am truly glad that I had found this place this afternoon. All of us had a hearty lunch. This is definitely a restaurant that I would highly recommend!
