Restoran Hou Hou Kee @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

In my quest to blog about all the restaurants in my hometown Tanjung Malim, I decided to try out this recently opened restaurant in a new area of town called Taman Wangsa Setia which is a little off the famous Garden Seafood Restaurant, north bound towards the small town of Behrang.

Restaurant Hou Hou Kee in Taman Wangsa Setia

The Air-Conditioned Area
This restaurant occupies two shop lots, one being open air and the other was an enclosed area with air-conditioning. There seemed to be a number of customers there and that built my confidence to try out this place. Usually each restaurant has it's own specialty dishes and being not familiar with their specialty dishes, we just ordered randomly. There was  not much room to order large quantities or more dishes as there was only the two of us but hope that what we ordered would be good.

Coca Cola @ RM 2.40

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50

White Rice @ RM 1.00 per plate
It didn't take long for the dishes to arrive. Within 20 minutes, the dishes started coming one by one. The prices seemed decent except for the Coca Cola which was slightly expensive.

Sizzling Tofu @ RM 8.00

These are the common dishes that we usually order at the other restaurants. Their Sizzling Tofu looked rather simple and there was no egg at the base. It was also very brown in colour which proves that a lot of soy sauce had been used. Surprisingly, the taste was very bland and it was nowhere near acceptable level. I had to add a lot of soy sauce just to give it an edible taste. In a nutshell, the dish was really bad and I would only rate this at 2/10 .

Vegetable Soup @ RM 7.00

Okay, this was another disastrous dish. It tasted flat, there were no traces of salt or pepper in this dish. I had to add loads of soy sauce to give this some taste until the soup was brown in colour. A no order dish here and I would rate this at 1/10. It was horrible!

Paku Pakis Belacan @ RM 7.00

This, in contrary was the best Belacan dish that I have ever tried. It was the best in Tanjung Malim. The belacan broth at the base was thick and so flavourful. The vegetable itself was crispy and very fresh. This dish was indeed heavenly! I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Location Map
On the whole, it was a below average meal that we had. Looking at the other tables, I think that we had ordered the wrong dishes here as none of the other tables had ordered the first two dishes that we ordered and the dishes that they had ordered were all looking good. Price wise, I think that it's very cheap comparatively. I would definitely return here with a larger group to try out the other dishes, perhaps than I would be able to write a better review. Nevertheless, the Paku Pakis Belacan is definitely a taste that I would always remember!
