Segambut Akka Curry House @ Segambut, Kuala Lumpur

I think many people around Segambut would be very familiar with Segambut Akka Curry House but perhaps not those living outside of Segambut. Having been around for more than two decades, Segambut Akka Curry House is one of the pioneer 'Akka's' in the industry. They started as a simple stall under a tree. Today they have grown into a restaurant and yes, they are still located under the very same tree that they started. Run by a husband and wife couple along with some assistants, business has been very good for them and the place is always crowded.

Located Just Behind The Tree

Parking Can Be Difficult

This Is Right Opposite The Place

Finding the place can be quite complicating, especially for first timers. That is why I have added so many photographs here to assist. Assuming you are coming from Jalan Kuching, you would surely take the roundabout and the moment you turn into Jalan Segambut, slow down and keep left. It is almost immediate that you would need to turn left. This restaurant may be hidden from view if you are still at the main road but it is located right before the Proton Service Centre. Parking is very difficult here. Most of them would walk or come by motorcycles. As for us today, I went up to the housing side, parked the car there and used the back lane short cut to come here. It was just a mere 5 minutes walk and it's safe to park your car there.

Huge Variety Of Dishes

Best To Come Early

Delicious Food
I last came here about 9 years ago and the place has not changed a bit. Business is open from 8 am till 5 pm daily and they are closed on Sundays. My advise would be to come early for lunch as the place is incessantly full. Of course they do top up the dishes nevertheless, you get better options when you arrive between 12 to 1 pm. On any day, they would have around 30 non vegetarian dishes and approximately 40 vegetarian dishes. That's an excellent selection that we do not get at most places. Sitting areas are mostly shared. Don't expect to get a table to yourself as it is almost an impossible feat during peak hours. The tables are mostly aligned like canteen concept and you don't have the freedom to sit and chat once you're done with your meal as there would be people waiting right behind you at all times. That's one setback here but it is a healthy indicator that the food is good and cheap.

Our Lunch For The Day

Our Lunch For The Day
All you have to do is to queue up, choose the kind of rice you want (normal or par boil rice) and then pick up the dishes yourself and return to your table. Akka would then follow and get your drink orders and then, once she has summed up your meal, would write the amount on a small piece of paper and slit it under your plate. My Father and I were spoilt for choice and what we did was take different things (even the gravy) on each of our plates so that we could share them and in that way, get a chance to taste more of the dishes. The good thing here is that Akka is so used to having food bloggers like me visiting them all the time and she even suggested angles for taking those shots. That was so cute of her. Very friendly couple and all the staffs are extremely efficient.

Fish Kulambu
Their Fish Kulambu was bold, filled with spices and did not have a 'fishy' taste to it. Slightly sour and mildly spicy, it was just perfect. Very much like home cooked preparation and clearly no MSG added. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Vegetable Kulambu
Their Vegetable Kulambu was even better than the Fish Kulambu. A perfect blend of spices and it was so aromatic. They were also very generous with the number of vegetables added to it. Delicious! I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

Vegetable
This vegetable too was quite nice. Not overdone, it was cooked to just the right level without killing the nutrients. Taste was good too. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Spicy Potato Perattal
Being fans of Potato, both of us were in love with this. We actually had two servings of this as it was very delicious. Perfect cube sizes cooked with some spicy masala and they were a treat. I would rate this at 9.7/10 .

Fish Varai / Sura Puttu
The Indian Tamil's generally call this Sura Puttu and the Ceylon Tamil's call this Meen Varai, both are the same but it is best to use the previous term as not many know the latter. Once again, this won our hearts. It was one that was rich with spices and tasted amazing. Suddenly, I remembered my late grandmother's preparation as it was quite similar. I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

Sardine Sambal
They had both Sardine Kulambu (Gravy) and Sardine Sambal and we decided on the latter. What can I say. Another excellent one that was prepared perfectly without any stench and it was spicy and delicious. Loved it! I would rate this at 9.8/10 .

Goat Kudal (Intestine) Perattal
Being a fan of mutton and all it's parts, I could not resist taking this. The preparation was lovely. The intestines were flawlessly cleaned and cooked with some mild tasting masala. This was good as it did not kill the natural taste of the intestines. Tasty! I would rate this at 9/10 .

Mutton Perattal
Oh My God! This was super duper good! Lean mutton chunks were cooked in a rich and spicy masala and they tasted heavenly. Absolutely loved it. I don't mind having just this, rice and some Rasam. Just amazing! I would rate this at 9.9/10 .

Paruppu (Dhall) Rasam
Besides the above, we were also provided with some Appalam (Papadam) and Rasam. Today, they had prepared Paruppu Rasam and not the usual Milagu Rasam. Another good preparation and the blend of spices were just perfect. I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Iced Moor
This was heavenly! Till date, I have never come across a pure, undiluted drink like this in any other restaurant in Malaysia. It was so good that we had three glasses of it. The Iced Moor was truly a taste to remember. I would rate this at 9.9/10 .

Lunch Was Fantastic

Extremely Reasonable Prices
We had two plates of Rice, Fish Kulambu, Vegetable Kulambu, two servings of Potato Perattal, some Vegetable, Goat Kudal Perattal, Mutton Perattal, Sardine Sambal, Fish Varai, three Iced Moor's, Appalam's and two glasses of Paruppu Rasam. Not to forget another two glasses of Iced Water and all this was just RM 14.40 . Amazingly cheap and extremely delicious food. And they have been like this for more than two decades. No wonder they are going so strong and their customer base is growing day by day. If you happen to be in Segambut, please do give this place a try. You would be truly impressed with the food here.

  2. I love southern Indian food. I will try Akka curry house these days when my craving starts.

Which Indian Fish head do you recommend? I had enough of those Chinese creamy and milky curry, I am craving for soury fish head curry, santan free. What do you think of the famous Sentul curry house?

    1. Hi Lim, Thank you for taking the time to read and I'm glad to hear that you love South Indian food. Yes, this would definitely be a great place to try and do let me know your thoughts once you visit them please.

You're right. There are so many famous Chinese restaurants for Fish Head Curry and all are selling at premium prices. The one in Taman Kok Lian, Sri Gimbak and the list goes on. As for the Indian ones, Kampung Pandan isbthe famouse one but the quality has dropped tremendously over the years and they charge extremely high prices. Sentul Curry House is nice, not as pricey but I would recommend you to try these instead:
Yasseen Nasi Kandar in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman
Kudu Bin Abdul in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman
The famous one in Kampung Attap which is right at the end of the road before turning into Federal Highway. Very much recommended
Selvam Stall in Brickfields. Located just beside Vivekananda Ashram.
These are some good and reasonably priced places that you could give a try.
      Hope the above helped.
      Best regards,

  3. Hi Venoth,

Thanks for taking time to reply, appreciated it. Yes, I had tried Akka curry house. The food there is superb, especially their vegetable specialties (made of banana).

I'd suggest you try Sri Ganapathi Mess, Petaling Jaya Old Town, a house converts to business.

I haven't tried any of Jln TAR. Yes, Kg Attap fish head curry was good then but the quality has dropped too. I might revisit the Pangkor curry fish head located in Tmn Megah, but they are not cheap. Have you tried Annuar curry fish, Bangsar? Prepare for the long wait!

My friends took me a place in Kapar town, Kee Heong restaurant. Their fish head curry is authentic Indian. And much to my surprise, the cook was coached by an Indian, fascinating.

    Nice chatting with you.

    1. Hi Lim,

That's awesome! I'm happy that you loved the food too.

Yes, I have tried Ganapathi Mess before. Here's the link to my previous review. http://venoth.blogspot.my/2013/02/sri-ganapathi-mess-petaling-jaya.html Love the food there.

Has it? That's sad. I think after the new building acquisition, the quality must have dropped. Hate when this happens. I should head there sometime soon to check them out. Been ages now. Never heard of this Pangkor Curry Fish Head. Hmmm.... must be one of those very famous ones were people are willing to pay. Quite similar to Radha Raub in Uptown Damansara. They also have one in Goh Tong Jaya and the first shop in Raub. Became very famous when the Pahang Sultan started becoming one of their loyal clients and you know what follows next. It's royalty pricing now and quality has surely dropped too.

Annuar in Bangsar, yes! The corner stall that's the same row as the Ceylonese Style Milk Appam right? Been there too but again it's been at least 5 years. Time to revisit. He used to be good and cheap. Hope it's the same now.

Nice. Would love to check out Kee Heong Kee too. Thanks for exchanging notes. Really appreciate you reaching out to me. Let's keep this going and hope to do Banana Leaf Meal together someday!

      Likewise too.

      Best Regards,
      Venoth
