Ayam Penyet - AP @ Bandar Puteri, Puchong

Being tucked away in a hidden corner in Bandar Puteri Puchong is this Indonesian restaurant called Restoran Ayam Penyet - AP. Serving authentic East Java and Minangkabau cuisine, this restaurant seems to be a branch of a restaurant located in the city of Surabaya which lies in the province of East Java.

Restoran Ayam Penyet-AP in Bandar Puteri, Puchong
It is located along Jalan 8/1 right behind the Ratha Curry House that faces the Giant Hypermarket. This stretch can become quite lonely at nights and this is the only active restaurant along the entire stretch. Due to the lack of business activity at night, this stretch of road becomes almost deserted and many people miss this restaurant. As I was here tonight to meet my brother, we sighted this place and decided to drop by and try out the food here.

Outdoor Seating Area

Indoor Seating Area
This restaurant has both an indoor and outdoor seating area. The indoor seating area is air conditioned and comes with a TV playing HBO all the time. I must say that the restaurant is very clean and the staffs are very attentive to customers. All the staffs including the cashier are from Surabaya.

Individual Sets
The menu definitely boasts of a great collection of food from both Javanese and Minangkabau dishes. The above are just some of the pages from the menu card. Besides this, they also have noodles to offer. They also offer value sets and they include family and individual sets. After going through the menu, we decided on the orders, filled in the order chit and passed it on to the waitress.

Lemon Coke @ RM 3.80
My brother ordered the above Lemon Coke and for the size of the glass, the price was surely worth paying.

Indonesian Teh Tarik @ RM 3.20
The above Teh Tarik was my drink. I have traveled to quite a number of cities in Indonesia but have never seen Teh Tarik served there. The common ones are the Teh Botol and this is the first time I am tasting this drink. It surely has a distinct taste of its own compared to our local Teh Tarik. This was much lighter, creamier and was mildly sweet. Somehow it was quite nice. I would rate this Tea at 8/10 .

Rice @ RM 1.50
I feel that the price for the rice is a tad too expensive. RM 1.00 would have been just fine. For the two of us, the rice alone came to RM 3.00 as it is priced at RM 1.50 per bowl.

Tahu Tempe Penyet @ RM 4.90
This was a wonderful dish. Although I feel that the quantity was less for the price, yet the Tempe and Tahu was very well done according to the Indonesian tradition. The Chili was extremely spicy and was on par to the ones that we get in Indonesia. Taste wise, I would rate this dish at 8.8/10 .

AP Ayam Penyet @ RM 8.50
The Ayam Penyet was just average. I had tried much better ones in Indonesia, especially the one operated by Ibu Ruth which I believe has branches in Malaysia. Coming back again to this dish, I would only rate this at 6.5/10 . The Chicken lacked the oomph factor that is associated to Ayam Penyet.

Ikan Asam Pedas @ RM 9.50

Ikan Asam Pedas @ RM 9.50
This is by far the second best Asam Pedas that I have ever tried. The best is still Aunty Aini's in Nilai and this stands at the second place. For the price, the fish was super huge. Not only that, the gravy was really spicy and delicious. It was literally sour and spicy. A must try dish here. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Overall, this is a great place to visit. In total, the bill for todays dining came up to RM 36.20 including taxes. Though the restaurants name is Ayam Penyet, that dish is a little disappointing but the other dishes were pretty good. All the dishes I had tried tonight are of the Javanese origin and I did not try the Minangkabau variety. I would definitely return soon to try the other variety as well. If you happen to be in Bandar Puteri, do drop by at this place and the Ikan Asam Pedas is a must try!
